I took my 9-year-old daughter,Suzan and 5-year-old son,Robbie to the shopping centre. As we got there,we saw a big sign that said,“Petting Zoo”.The kids jumped up and asked,“Daddy, can we go?”
Both my wife and I were out of work. However,I said,“Sure”,giving them a quarter each. They went away, leaving only fifty cents left in my pocket.
A petting zoo is made up of a hundred of little baby animals of all kinds.Kids pay their money and stay in the enclosure(圍場)pleased with the little animals while their parents shop.
A few minutes later,I saw Suzan walking along behind me.I was surprised and asked what was wrong.
She said sadly,“Well,Daddy,a ticket for Petting Zoo costs fifty cents. So I gave Robbie my quarter.” Then she said the most beautiful thing I ever heard. She repeated the family motto(座右銘),which is “Love is Action!”
I knew clearly no one loves little animals more than Suzan. She had watched both my wife and me do and say "Love is Action!” for years, and now she had put it into her lifestyle. It had become part of her, because she knew the whole family motto. It’s not only “Love is Action”;it’s “Love is SACRIFICAL(犧牲的)Action!" Love always pays a price.
I was moved. We went back to the Petting Zoo.Suzan stood with her hands and chin(下巴)resting on the fence and just watched Robbie go crazy petting and feeding the animals.I had fifty cents burning a hole in my pocket. I put my hand into my pocket and took out the money.Sure,I must do that !

After years of her crying. I finally gave in and allowed my daughter to have a cat. I now regret my decision. As someone needs to have a clean, tidy house, I no longer feel relaxed in my own home. If I tell her, “sorry, the cat has to go.” She will be heartbroken. What can I do?
-Feline Phobic
Dear Phobic,
I’m an animal lover and on your kid’s and cat’s side. Tell your daughter your problem. Ask her to help you come up with a plan. Perhaps you can agree to allow the cat only in certain areas of the house. This is a chance for your daughter to develop the sense of responsibility owning a pet requires.
Dear Aunty,
I got the highest grade on a biology test. Now the popular kids think I’m brainy, and want me in their lab group. I knew I was being used. Now, they want my homework. What should I do?

Dear Crystal,
Humans run in packs like dogs. When a new dog enters the pack, a lot of discovery goes on. So bring cookies for everyone! Then try making friends with one co-worker. Invite her to lunch. Dear Aunty,
I work at a supermarket, and another girl and I share tasks we must finish before leaving. But she takes half an hour to do something I can do in ten minutes. She always has a story to tell me and stops working when she does. My boss is angry at both of us, but It’s not my fault. I don’t want to rat on her, but what else can I do?
Flustered
Dear Flustered,
Let me propose a better way. Make a log of all the tasks you share, then suggest to your boss that for efficiency your duties could be divided into two separate checklists. If he’s reluctant, go to plan B: the next time this girl starts telling you a story, stop working to listen and call your boss over to hear what a great storyteller she is. I’m sure he’ll take it from here.
Aunty
Dear Aunty,
I’m a college student in the Philippines who wants to be wise with money. I’m not an economics or business major student and I don’t know anything about stocks. But I really want to buy assets and invest. I receive about 15,000 pesos(比索)every school term from my education plan. I don’t have any idea how I should spend it. I don’t want to just buy new clothes, or hang out with my friends because it would not be wise. I want my money to grow. Please enlighten me.
Fastbreakplay
Dear Fastbreakplay,
Being wise with money is the No. 1 thing to learn. Start with a disciplined and systematic savings plan. When your savings reach a sizeable amount, then you may start investing. In the meantime, invest in yourself by reading up on stock markets and capital markets. Follow the news. Before I started investing during my senior high school years, I had already studied stock market data of the past century as I believe markets tend to repeat themselves. If you master this skill, you will master your reading of the markets.

Feeling blue about world? “Cheer up.” Says science writer Matt Ridley.”The world has never been a better place to live in, and it will keep on getting better both for humans and for nature.”
Ridley calls himself a rational optimist—rational, because he’s carefully weighed the evidence; optimistic, because that evidence shows human progress to be both unavoidable and good. And this is what he’s set out to prove from a unique point of view in his most recent book. The Rational Optimist. He views mankind as grand enterprise that on the whole, has done little but progress for 100,000 years. He backs his finding with hard facts gathered through years of research.
Here’s how he explains his views.
1) Shopping fuels invention
It is reported that there are more than ten billion different products for sale in London alone.Even allowing for the many people who still live in poverty, our own generation has access to more nutritious food, more convenient transport, bigger houses, better ears, and of course, more pounds and dollars than any who lived before us.This will continue as long as we use these things to make other things. The more we specialize and exchange, the better off we’ll be.
2)Brilliant advances
One reason we are richer, healthier, taller, cleverer, longer-lived and freer than ever before is that the four most basic human needs -food, clothing, fuel and shelter- have grown a lot cheaper.Take one example. In 1800 a candle providing one hour’s light cost six hours’ work.In the 1880s the same light from an oil lamp took 15 minutes’ work to pay for.In 1950 it was eight seconds.Today it’s half second.
3)Let’s not kill ourselves for climate change
Mitigating(減輕)climate change could prove just as damaging to human welfare as climate change itself.A child that dies from indoor smoke in a village, where the use of fossil-fuel(化石燃料)electricity is forbidden by well - meaning members of green political movements trying to save the world, is just as great a tragedy as a child that dies in a flood caused by climate change. If climate change proves to be mild, but cutting carbon causes real pain, we may well find that we have stopped a nose - bleed by putting a tourniquet(止血帶)around our necks.
小題1:What is the theme of Ridley’s most recent book?
A.Weakness of human nature.
B.Concern about climate change.
C.Importance of practical thinking.
D.Optimism about human progress.
小題2:How does Ridley look at shopping?
A.It encourages the creation of things.
B.It results in shortage of goods.
C.It demands more fossil fuels.
D.It causes a poverty problem.
小題3:The candle and lamp example is used to show that
A.oil lamps give off more light than candles
B.shortening working time brings about a happier life.
C.a(chǎn)dvanced technology helps to produce better candles.
D.increased production rate leads to lower cost of goods.

About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas(胰腺). I didn’t even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that was incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which was doctor’s code for preparing to die. It meant to try to tell your kids everything you thought you’d have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It meant to make sure everything was buttoned up so that it would be as easy as possible for your family. It meant to say your goodbyes.
I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy(活組織檢查). I was calm, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I’m fine now.
This is the closest I’ve been to facing death. No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by the principle — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
小題1:The author's main purpose in writing the passage is to let the readers __________.
A.be brave when facing a cancer
B.treasure their lifetime to fulfill their own business
C.know a sorrowful experience of his won
D.know how he treasured his family.
小題2:Why can the author's illness be cured so soon?

A.he was so optimistic that the incurable illness wouldn't bring him down.
B.he could leave death alone and had enough courage to become what he wanted to.

D.he was such a responsible man that he prepared well before he died.
