For well over a thousand years, smallpox was a disease that everyone feared. The disease killed much of the native population in South America when the Spanish arrived there in the early sixteenth century.By the end of the eighteenth century, smallpox was responsible for about one in
ten deaths around the world. Those who survived the disease were left with ugly scars on their sjun.
It had long been well known among farmers that people who worked with cows seldom caught smallpox;instead, they often caught a similar but much milder disease called cowpox (牛痘) .A Bridsh doctor called Jenner was extremely interested in this, and so he studied cowpox He believed that,by vaccinating (給接種疫苗) people with the disease,he could protect them against the much worse disease smallpox. In 1796,he vaccinated a boy with cowpox and,two months later, with smallpox. The boy did not get smallpox. In the next two years,Jenner vaccinated several children in the same way,and none of them got the disease.
News of the success of Jenner’s work soon spread.Vaccination soon became a common method to protect people against other diseases caused by virus, such as rable (狂犬病),and vaccines (疫苗) were sent across the world to the United States and India.
It took nearly two centuries to achieve Jenner’s dream of getting free of smallpox from the whole world. In 1967,the world Health Organization (WHO) started a great vaccination program, and the last known case of smallpox was recorded in Somalia in 1977.The story of vaccinations does not end there, however. There are many other diseases that kill more and more people every year.Besides, many new diseases are being discovered. The challenge for medical researchers will, therefore, probably continue for several more centuries

“All men are created equal” is one idea that nearly every American would agree upon.  36 they sometimes betray the idea in their daily lives, they have a deep faith  37 in some fundamental way no one is born superior to anyone else.
In the early years of American history, because titles of nobility(貴族) were forbidden, no  38 class system developed in the United States. Firmly believing that being born into a lower class would not  39 them from success and they would have a better chance in America, thousands of immigrants   40 to leave the European societies, where their    41  in life was determined  42 by the social class into which they were born. It was because the dreams of many of there immigrants were   43 in their new country, though there might be  44 in some situations, that Americans came to believe in equality of opportunity.
Americans do not mean that everyone should be  45 equal when they say they believe in equality of opportunity.  46 , they do mean that each person should have an equal chance for success. Abraham Lincoln once said, “We wish to  47 the humblest(最微賤的) man an equal chance to get rich with everybody else. When one starts poor, free society is  48 that he knows he can   49 his condition.”
However, competition is the price to be   50  for his equality of opportunity. Americans match their energy and intelligence against that of others in a competitive contest for success, because they believe competition  51 the best in any person. Indeed, the pressure of competition causes an American to be   52 , but it also places a constant emotional stress on him. In fact, in a society that gives so much  53  to those “winners”,   54 does not compete successfully for whatever reason never  55 into it as well as those who do.

Buster Brown was a thief — and a good one, too, he thought. He’d never been caught by the police because he was always prepared for any unforeseen event or emergency.
Confidently, he stood outside the house of his intended victim and read the sign on the front gate of the house. “Don’t worry about the dog –be aware of the owner!” it said. Buster smiled and found his ways in.
The house looked quite normal outside, but inside it was very unusual with fascinating objects on display. As he began putting them into his bag, a dog came into the room. It stopped when it saw Buster, then wagged its tail madly and went over to him, licking his outstretched hand. “Good boy,” Buster whispered. “What a great guard dog you are –trying to lick me to death.”
Satisfied he’d made friends with the dog, Buster began to wander round the house, choosing items to put in his bag. His skilled eye picked out only the best antiques(古董)---a pair of silver candleholders, a silver tea and coffee service, etc. His new friend, the dog, sat and watched, as if wondering what was happening.
“Well, boy,” Buster whispered finally. “That might do any more and I won’t be able to carry it!” He swung the heavy bag onto his shoulders, just then the lights came on, nearly blinding him. He protected his eyes with his hand.
“You’re a very silly person,” the figure in the doorway said, his voice dry as dust. As the man came closer, Buster could see he was well dressed. His face seemed familiar, but Buster couldn’t quite sure where he had seen him before.

There are many theories about the beginning of drama in ancient Greece. The one most widely accepted today is based on the assumption that drama came from ritual (宗教儀式). The argument for this view goes as follows. In the beginning, human beings viewed the natural forces of the world, even the seasonal changes, as unpredictable, and they sought through various means, to control these unknown and feared powers. Those measures which appeared to bring the desired results were then kept and repeated until they hardened into fixed rituals. Eventually stories arose which explained the mysteries of the rites. As time passed some rituals were abandoned, but the stories, later called myths (神話), coutinued to exist and provided material for art and drama.
Those who believe that drama came from ritual also argue that those rites contained the seed of theater because music, dance, masks, and costumes were almost always used. Furthermore, a suitable site had to be provided for performances and when the entire community did not participate, a clear division was usually made between the “acting area” and the “watching area.” In addition, there were performers, and, since considerable importance was attached to avoiding mistakes in performing, religious leaders usually undertook that task. Wearing masks and costumes, they often imitated other people, animals, or supernatural beings, and used gestures about the desired effect, success in hunt or battle, the coming rain, the revival (復活) of the Sun. Eventually such dramatic representations were separated from religious activities.
Another theory traces the theater’s origin from the human interest in storytelling. According to this view, tales about the hunt, war, or other feats are gradually added in detail, at first through imitation, action, and dialogue by a narrator and then through the assumption of each of the roles by a different person. A closely-related theory traces theater to those dances that are primarily rhythmical and gymnastic or that are imitations of animal movements and sounds.

Empty Deserts
In the 19th century Americans from the eastern states moved out west to settle in the rich new lands along the Pacific coast. The most difficult part of their trip was crossing the “Great American Desert in the western part of the United States by horse and wagon.
The western desert can be very dangerous. There is little water and there are few trees. But the desert also has scenery of great beauty. Tall towers of red and yellow stone rise sharply from the flat sandy valley floor. The scene has been photographed many times and appears in movies and in TV.
In Arizona, man made dams across the Colorado River have made two large lakes in the middle of the dry desert country. At Lake Powell, the red stone arch of Rainbow Bridge rises high above the blue lake.
There are few roads. Many areas of Lake Powell’s shore can only be reached by boat or on foot. But hikers in this empty desert land sometimes find very old native American pictures, painted on the rocks.
In Death Valley, California, the summer temperature rises to 130 degrees. There is less than two inches of rain each year. Death Valley is the lowest place in America---- 925 meters below sea level. In the 1800s, many travelers died when they tried to cross this waterless valley in the terrible heat.
Although the desert is dry and seems empty, there is plenty of life if you look closely. Small insects, snakes and rats have learned how to live in the desert heat. They live under ground and come out at night, when it is cool. Plants such as cacti need very little water.  When it does rain in the desert (sometimes only once or twice a year), plants grow quickly, and flowers open in a single day. For a short time, the desert is covered with brilliant colors.

Women in Nazi Germany were to have a very special job. Hitler was very clear about this. This job was that they should be good mothers bringing up children at home while their husbands worked. Except for some special fields, Hitler saw no reason why a woman should work. Within months of Hitler coming to power, many female doctors, teachers and lawyers were sacked. By the start of the Second World War, very few German women were in fulltime work. From their earliest years, girls were taught that all good German women married at a young age to a proper German and that the wife’s job was to keep a good home for her working husband and to have children.
One of the earliest laws passed by Hitler once he came to power in 1933, was the Law for the Encouragement of Marriage. This law stated (聲明) that all newly married couples would get a government loan (貸款) of 1000 marks. This loan was not to be simply paid back. The birth of one child meant that 25% of the loan did not have to be paid back. Two children meant that 50% of the loan didn’t need to be paid back. Four children meant that the entire loan was cleared.

The Parthenon is an ancient Greek temple built in Athens about 438 B. C. Many people think that the Parthenon is one of the world' s most beautiful buildings. It has a grace and balance that have pleased the eyes of man for centuries.
Architects who have studied the Parthenon know that the Parthenon is a giant optical illusion. An optical illusion is a trick our eyes play on us. All the seemingly straight lines of the Parthenon are actually curves(rounded bends). These curves did not happen by accident. The ancient Greeks, who were fine engineers as well as excellent artists, knew that straight lines can sometimes appear to be curved ! So they designed their columns (stone poles) to look straight.
Try drawing two long parallel(平行)lines on paper. Do they seem to look closer together in the middle than at the ends? A tall column is likely to look narrow halfway up, too. The columns of the Parthenon look as if they stand perfectly straight. Actually, they are slightly bigger in size in the middle and go inward a little at the top. If lines were drawn up along opposite sides of the columns, these lines would meet about one mile above the building.
A platform of three steps forms the base on which the Parthenon rests. These steps have strong horizontal(水平)lines that balance the vertical(豎直)lines of the columns. But the steps are not really level and flat! They curve up in the middle because if they were absolutely straight,,they would appear to curve down. The line of the top step,if continued at both ends, would form a circle with a radius of 3. 5 miles.
When is a curved line not a curved line? When our eyes tell us it is straight!
73.The passage mainly tells us_______.
A. what two parallel lines look like on paper
B. why a curved line can appear to be straight
C. where the secret of the Parthenon Temple lies
D. when the columns of the Parthenon look curved
74.Which of the following is close in shape with the steps of the platform?
A.                B.           C.       D.
75.What can we infer from the passage?
A. The Parthenon is a famous historic building.
B. The Greeks knew a lot about optical illusions.
C. The ancient Greeks were people of intelligence.
D. Curved lines can meet somewhere above a building.
