     Standard English is the formal English that you need to use when you write in coursework or in
the exam. Standard English is the form of English you learn in school. All written English should be
standard that means it should be clear enough for anyone in Britain to understand it. Standard English
developed as the main form. of printed English in the 15th Century. At the time, every region of Britain
used to spell w0rds differently, but printers needed a fixed spelling. Printers like Caxton chose the East
Midlands dialect form which was used in London and the South East. Soon Standard English replaced
all written dialect forms  the other forms of English spoken around the country. It also replaced French
and Latin in law and in academic work. In the 18th Century, people wrote dictionaries and grammar
books which standardized spelling Dr Johnson's Dictionary of 1755 fixed many of the spellings we
still use today. All written English should be Standard English any grammar rules you learn are for
Standard English and you will definitely need to learn them to avoid making mistakes in your work.
The rules of Standard English mean using the correct forms of words with the correct spellings.
     Avoid slang words words that your teachers or friends wouldn't understand. You'll lose marks if
the examiners can't understand what you say or write. Don't use dialect words. Every region has
words or phrases that are only used there. Don't use them in your coursework, because you won't
be understood. Make sure you revise grammar and punctuation you have learned, and learn the list
of commonly misspelled words you have made. Cliches are ideas or sayings which have been used
so often that they've become boring and unoriginal. Phrases like, "As good as it gets" "At the end of
the day" "In the fullness of time" are all cliches. So are images like, "as fierce as a lion" "as cunning as
a fox". If you use them you will sound boring and unimaginative  that could mean you lose marks for
writing and speaking style. So avoid cliches.

  Sailors used to speak of a “Jack”when they meant a flag which was set near the bow of a sailing ship. The flag showed the country to which the ship belonged. The Union Jack became the flag of Great Britain. Australia's flag has the Union Jack in the top left hand corner together with the stars of the Southern Cross. In the debates about how a particular piece of land is to be used, the priorities often conflict. What should you do, for example, if you find out that under the fertile fields of a farming community there is a thick bed of coal which can be strip mined(露天礦) ? Strip mining tears up top soil and plants. But mining may create jobs, bring money to the towns businesses. Those who approve of strip mining say that the coal is needed, and they point out that it is quicker and cheaper to get coal from the surface than to go deep into the earth to get it by standard mining techniques. How do we find our way out of the land-used problem? One way might be to reexamine our values, to think in new directions. Does everyone have to have a car with its need for highways and parking lots? What about developing mass transport systems that use less land? Do suburbs have to spread? Can they be designed so they use less space? Do we have to have more energy? If we do, do we really have to strip-mine coal to provide it?
However difficult they may be to arrive at, choices will have to be made if we want to preserve the beauty and usefulness of the land. For there is at least one point on which all of us can agree: The land does have its limits.

A teenage girl is fighting for her life today after being struck by lightning as severe thunderstorms swept across Britain. The girl was one of four teenage girls from London who were hit by lightning in the Parade Ground area of Hyde Park during a storm. A spokesman for the London Ambulance Service said paramedics risked their lives to treat the girls. “The storm was still overhead and lightning was still coming down while they were treating the patients,” he said. “All staff involved acted very professionally in providing fast treatment to these patients in very difficult circumstances.” Scotland Yard said the incident was being looked into by officers from the Royal Parks’ Operational Command Unit.

Joseph Wharton of Byland Way, Bloxwich, was hit during the extended thunderstorm which struck the region yesterday morning. He was pronounced dead at Walsall Manor Hospital.

He had been sleeping in a tent while staying with school friend Michael Lees at a house on nearby Cresswell Crescent.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said paramedics were called at 7:50 a.m. and unsuccessful attempts were made to revive(使蘇醒)the sports-mad teenager. A spokesman for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents said four or five people die each year as a result of lightning strikes in the UK.
