Two new studies suggest that modern running shoes could increase the risk of injuries to runners.
One study involved sixty-eight healthy young women and men who ran at least twenty-four kilometers a week. The runners were observed on a treadmill machine(跑步機).Sometimes they wore running shoes.Other times they ran barefoot.
Researchers found that running shoes create more stress that could damage knees, hips and ankle joints than running barefoot. They observed that the effect was even greater than the effect reported earlier for walking in high heels.
The other study compared runners in the United States and Kenya. The researchers divided the runners into three groups. One group had always run shoeless.Another group had always run with shoes. And the third group had changed to shoeless running.
Runners who wear shoes usually come down heel first. That puts great force on the back of the foot. But the study found that barefoot runners generally land on the front or middle of their foot. That way they ease into their landing and avoid striking their heels.
Daniel Lieberman says the way most running shoes are designed may explain why those who wear them land on their heels. The heel of the shoe is bigger and heavier than other parts of the shoe,so it would seem more likely to come down first. Also, the heel generally has thick material under it to soften landings.
But the researchers do not suggest that runners immediately start running barefoot. They say it takes some training. And there can be risks, like running when your feet are too cold to feel if you get injured.
1.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Running in shoes is partly good to runners.
B. Two new discoveries encourage people to run in high heels.
C. Walking in high heels could cause less serious effects than running barefoot.

A. running barefoot is faster than running in shoes.
B. the landing point is very important in running.
C. running shoeless can give people a real exercise.
D. different running ways cause different injuries.
3.Why do people who run in shoes land on their heels?
A. Because the shoes put great force on the back of the foot.
B. Because the design of running shoes is unreasonable.
C. Because people who often run get used to landing on their heels.
D. Because the running people want to run faster.
4.What’s the writer’s attitude towards the use of the modern running shoes?
A. Positive. B. Persuasive.
C. Objective. D. Supportive.

科目:高中英語 來源:2016屆遼寧省高三上學期第二次模擬考試英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解
La Gomera is the only place in the world that has a whistle language. We do not know how and why it began because we do not know the complete history of the island. But we can certainly imagine the reasons for the beginning of the whistle language. There are many deep valleys on the island. A person on one side of a valley can not easily shout to a person on the other side. But he can whistle and be heard. Some of the best whistlers can be heard from four miles away and the record is seven miles.
The people who live on the island usually have good teeth, and this helps them to whistle well. They must also have good ears so that they can hear other whistlers.
We can understand why the whistle language continues. It is very useful on the island, and quite easy to learn. When somebody is hurt or ill, the whistle language takes the place of telephone. If the sick person is quite far away from the town, people pass the message from one to another. A boy guarding cattle on a hillside whistles to a man fishing from his boat. The last one is able to describe the trouble fully and exactly to the doctor in town. People help one another in the same way when a car breaks down or a cow is lost.
The whistle language is hundreds of years old, and probably it will continue to live on for hundreds of years more. Radio and TV often kill the special ways of speaking in different parts of a country. But on La Gomera you are nobody if you cannot whistle. Perhaps soon after TV arrives on the island, people there will be whistling the news and other facts and opinions.
1. If a person on La Gomera is ill, ______.
A. the whistle language will help pass the message to the doctor
B. people will take him to town by carriage
C. his family will take him to the hospital
D. others will phone the doctor in town
2. La Gomera is special because ______.
A. we don’t know its complete history
B. people have to shout if they want to communicate
C. people there have good teeth and ears
D. people there use the whistle language to communicate with each other
3. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. The whistle language has been used for hundreds of years on the island, but will not be used any longer.
B. The whistle language can only be found on La Gomera.
C. It is not easy for a person to live on La Gomera if he cannot whistle.
D. The record shows that one best whistler can be heard by others from seven miles away.
4. Which of the following will be the best title of this passage?
A. The Secret Language
B. Do You Know the Whistle Language?
C. The Life of Islanders
D. La Gomera-a Mystery

Pearls of wisdom in Proverbs
Out of sight, out of mind. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. 1. . Each of the phrases mentioned above teachers a common truth. But what exactly is a proverb? It’s a short statement that contains a general truth. It is popularly known and often repeated.
Every culture has proverbs. 2. . For example, many cultures value old people for their wisdom and experience. This idea can be found in proverbs. A Chinese proverb says, “An old horse will never get lost.” And a Portuguese proverb states, “An old pan is the one that makes good food.” 3. . The English say, “Good and quickly seldom meet.” The Chinese say, “Think three times before you act.” A Russian proverb exclaims, “Take your thoughts to bed with you, for the morning is wiser.”
There is a saying: To truly know a people, learn their proverbs. Proverbs contain a culture’s values and morals. 4. . People in Saudi Arabia value books and learning. One of their proverbs says, “A book is a garden carried in the pocket.” The French say. “There is no pillow so soft as a clear conscience.” So that culture thinks that being honest is important. Egyptians know that value of friendship. One of their proverbs says, “Friendship doubles joy and halves grief.”
In Africa, many proverbs also use images familiar to Africans. For example, “The best way to cat an elephant in your path is cut him up into little pieces.” 5. . Or “A roaring lion kills no game.” This means that one cannot achieve anything by sitting around and talking about it. One must get out and strive for it.
Learning proverbs in another language is fun. You can make a good impression with your language ability. But remember, proverbs are usually used in spoken language. They are rarely used in writing. If you use a lot of proverbs when you write, people will think you don’t have original thoughts
A. What is your favorite proverb?
B. Have your heard any of these proverbs before?
C. Many culture also agree that acting in a hurry is not a good idea.
D. And while some are special for one culture, there are common themes.
E. In other words, the best way to solve a problem is to work on it bit by bit.
F. There are also proverbs such as “get your ducks in a row.”
G. So you can learn what is valued in different cultures through their proverbs.
