If you see someone drowning, speed is very important. Once you get him out of the water, if he isn’t breathing, you have four minutes before his brain is completely destroyed. Support his neck, tilt(使翹起)his head back and press his chin(下巴)upwards. This stops the tongue blocking the airway in the throat and is sometimes enough to get him breathing again. If that doesn’t work, start mouth-to-mouth breathing. Press his nostrils(鼻孔)together with your fingers. Open your mouth and take a deep breath. Blow into his lungs until his chest rises, then remove your mouth and watch his chest fall. Repeat twelve times a minute. Keep doing until help arrives.
To bring a child back to life, keep your lips around his mouth and nose and gently blow into his mouth. Give the first four breaths as quickly as possible to fill the blood with oxygen. If, in spite of your efforts, he starts turning a blue grey color, you can feel no pulse(脈搏),then pressing is the last chance of saving his life.
With arms straight, rock(搖動(dòng))forwards, pressing down on the lower half of the breastbone. Don’t be too hard or you may break a rib(肋骨). Check how effective you are seeing if his color improves or his pulse becomes independent to your chest pressing. If this happens, stop the pressing. Otherwise continue until rescue arrives.

She once said: "When people ask me if writing has been a hard or easy road I always answer with the famous saying, "the end is nothing; the road is all.'” That is what I mean when I say writing has been a pleasure. I have never faced the type-writer (打字機(jī)) with the thought that one more task had to be done."
Like most writers, Willa Cather did not write books for the money that they brought her, but rather for the pleasure that came in their writing. Her works were, like her, simple and full of the vigor (活力) of her days in Nebraska, where she grew from childhood to young womanhood and where she developed a deep love for the treeless land of the Great Plains with its wild flowers, wheat fields and rivers.
"It's a rather strange thing about the flat country," she wrote later. "It takes hold of you, or it leaves you perfectly cold. A great many people find it very dull; they like a church tower, an old factory, a waterfall country all made to look like a German, Christmas card... But when I come to the open plains, something happens. I'm home. I breathe differently."
1.What did Cather mean by "the end is nothing; the road is all"?
A. Writing is the only path to success.
B. I feel happy when I finish writing a book.
C. I enjoy writing whether it is hard or easy.
D. Writing itself, not its result, is important.
2.What was the place like where Cather grew up?
A. It was cold, plain and without a church.
B. It was a colorful world of wild flowers.
C. It was like a German Christmas card
D. It was vast, open, flat and wild.
3.When she said "It takes hold of you, or it leaves you perfectly cold", Willa Gather meant ______.
A. you either love the place or hate it
B. you decide either to stay or to leave
C. some find the place warm; others find it cold
D. some find the place peaceful; others find it wild
4.What happens when Cather comes to the open plains?
A. She breathes differently from others:
B. She wants to make the place her home.
C. She finds the place similar to her home.
D. She feels completely comfortable

While reading a story on 20-somethings complaining about how the economy is ruining their life plans, I couldn't help but think the 20-somethings sound like a bunch of spoiled children who grow up expecting everything to be easy for them. As a 20-something myself, I certainly share their disappointment –my husband and I probably won't be able to buy a house until we're in our forties, and we two are burdened by student loans. But why should it be different? Being young people in America, shouldn't they take up all of the challenges and opportunities that this country offers?
Consider some of these views shared in the story: Jennifer, 29, owner of a two-bedroom apartment with her husband, worries that she won't be able to have children for at least a decade because they can't afford to buy a house yet.
I read that, and I thought what planet she is living on where you need to own a house in order to have kids? Has she ever visited a developing country, or even downtown areas in this one? Home ownership is a luxury, not a fertility requirement.
A 26-year-old man in the story is disappointed that he can't afford to get a Ph. D. in literature. Well, that sounds a bit like expressing disappointment that no one will pay you to write poetry on the beach in Thailand for five years.
Yes, it's sad that these young people feel so lost. But I think the problem is their extremely high expectations, not economic reality. Beth Kobliner, author of Get a Financial Life: Personal Finance in Your Twenties and Thirties, says that she thinks people's expectations grow up when their wealth appears to be increasing. Their parents probably see their home values rise along with their investments. "So we have people who have grown up in an environment where people have great expectations of what living well means," says Kobliner.
This recession will certainly play a role in forcing those expectations into more realistic group. In the meantime, it seems much better for our mental health to focus on being grateful—for our one-bedroom apartments, for living in modern cities, or perhaps just for being able to eat three meals a day—than on longing for some kind of luxurious life.
1.What makes the author think the 20-somethings sound like a bunch of spoiled children?
A. They expect everything to be easy for them.
B. They complain that the economy is ruining their life plans.
C. They are unwilling to face all of the challenges.
D. They are burdened by student loans.
2.Which of the following is NOT one of the complaints of the 20-somethings?
A. They can't have children for at least a decade for they can't afford to buy a house.
B. They have only a one-bedroom apartment to live in.
C. They can't buy a house until 40 and are burdened by student loans.
D. They despair of not being able to afford to get a Ph. D. in literature.
3.What's Kobliner's attitude towards the 20-somethings with high expectations ?
A. Unbearable. B. Opposing. C. Doubtful. D. Understanding.
4.What is the best title for this passage?
A. Young people afford to continue their education
B. Young people can't afford to buy a house
C. Young people's high expectations lead to despair
D. The 20-somethings' high expectations

Just like in school, there are lessons you will learn in Latin dance. These lessons are not only about the dance itself. It’s also important to learn about manners (禮節(jié)) to get along well with other dancers.
What are some of the manners you should know about in Latin dance?
1. Sit out if the dance floor is overcrowded.
There are times when there are too many people on the dance floor. When the dance floor is overcrowded, people can run into each other, causing people to get angry. If you are polite, you will sit out in order to give way to other dancers. This way, they can perform with enjoyment.
2. Do not get in the way of other dancers.
There may be times when you need to share one dance floor. The best way to do it is to start in a place not too close to the other dancers. When you see that they need to move into your space, allow them some more space to complete their performance. Once they are finished, you will have the space to yourself and the people next to you will make space for you.
3. The dance floor is for dancing.
In the dance hall, do not use the dance floor to talk to your friends, discuss, or disagree about something. Dance floors are not sitting areas where you can do just anything. You will bother other dancers on the dance floor.
4. Avoid stopping other dancers.
You might need to step onto the dance floor while other dancers are performing. If you need to do this, walk around the dancers to avoid stopping them. This is one way of showing respect to your friends. You would not want them to stop you if you were the one dancing, so do not do it to them.
If all dancers would take these Latin dance manners to heart, then people would get along better on the dance floor.
1.What should you do if there are too many dancers on the dance floor?
________________________________________________________________________
2.What should you do when other dancers move into your space on the dance floor?
________________________________________________________________________
3.What should you do to avoid stopping other dancers when dancing on the same dance floor?
________________________________________________________________________
4.What is the passage mainly about?
________________________________________________________________________
