New technology comes to the aid of the disabled in many forms that will knock your socks off!
A mobility robot is a robot that is designed to help disabled people move around. It might have wheels, but most often it will have legs so it can climb stairs and uneven ground. It might also take the form of a mobility suit, which is a kind of robot that surrounds your body, arms and legs. Here are some examples.
Toyota Partner Robot This mobility robot can not only transport you around, you can also make it follow you around and use it to transport all the things you have bought when you are shopping. Even though it has wheels,it can still climb stairs since each wheel can move independently up and down.
Twendy One The other amazing mobility robots in the top 10 can only help you move around. Twendy One is different. It can help you move around and help you do almost all your household chores. Thanks to Twendy One's ability to understand human instructions,it can help you toast bread, prepare your dinner and find all kinds of stuff for you.
EL-E Fetch Bot The EL-E might not be a true mobility robot. It can't help you move around, but it can fetch things for you so you don't need to move anyway. All you need to do is to point a laser pointer at something and EL-E will race to get it for you. You can also point at another location to make EL-E move the item instead of giving it to you.
Bonus-BEAR Disabled people aren't the only ones who need to be transported around. Wounded soldiers might also need a lift back to base,so say hello to BEAR―Battlefield Extraction Assist Robot. The BEAR's two legs are designed so they can go anywhere a human can and the two arms can lift more than 250 pounds―enough to carry a wounded soldier.

A group of students in Japan have created a realistic robot baby to encourage young people to start planning a family so as to increase the country's birth rate. The automated (自動化的) doll developed at the University of Tsukuba, called Yotara, laughs and "wakes up" when a rat?tle is shaken.
He can become angry and sleep like a real baby and he smiles when his stomach is pressed. The robot can also sneeze and have a running nose, thanks to a heated water pump system. The students of the Graduate School of Comprehensive Human Sciences at the University created the robot last year with touch sensors. A projector sends the facial features onto a warm silicon bal?loon which makes up Yotara's face. The robot's facial expressions and body movements change according to pressure applied to different parts of its body.
The information collected through touch sensors under the silicon skin is processed by a special programme. It then changes the baby's expression projected onto the balloonface from behind. There is a hat on the robot's head and a colourful blanket on his limbs which simulate moving from side to side with the help of a motor. " We wanted to create a new type of robot that is soft, pretty and attractive," said project leader Hiroki Kunimura.
"We'd like people to experience the innocent, joyful expressions of typical small babies. Through this experience,it would be great if some people started feeling that they wanted to have their own baby,if they started feeling that working is not everything."
Japan's birth rate is among the lowest in the developed world at 1. 37% , compared to 2. 12% in the United Stated and 1. 84% in Britain. According to a ministry of labor and welfare report,Japan is facing a serious economic problem with over a quarter of its citizens expected to be aged over 65 by 2015. The population is expected to shrink by a third within 50 years if the birth rate does not increase.

A. To help the old people who live alone.
B. To give small children some pleasure.
C. To comfort lonely young people.
D. To increase the population of Japan.
( ) 2. From this passage we learn that Yotara .
A. can react to what you say to him
B. is controlled by pressure applied to him
C. shows no human emotions
D. can cough and have a runny nose
( ) 3. What's the new type of robot like in Hiroki Kunimura's mind?
A. It can do everything for humans.
B. It is clever, humorous and loyal.
C. It is gentle,lovely,and smart.
D. It makes humans happy.
( ) 4. What can we infer from this passage?
A. Many young people in Japan don't want to get married.
B. There may be a lack of workers in Japan in the future.
C. The lifespan of Japanese people will decrease in the future.
D. The birth rate of Japan will start to increase slowly soon.

In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, preparing for the worst, adventurer Peter Seiter wrote a farewell note to his family, put it in a wine bottle and threw it overboard. With a sense of bad feeling he wrote, " The ocean has a personality of its own. The place can be such a peaceful en?vironment to be in,yet it can be frightfully violent. I've experienced both."
"I included my geographical coordinates (地理坐標(biāo)) so if anything happened to me,they'd know my last place when I threw the bottle into the ocean”,says Peter. He also included some money with his message, asking whoever found it to use the money to post the letter to his family.
Seventeen days later he reached his destination, having survived the dangerous seas. But he never thought that his message in a bottle could be found on shore,11 years later!
Recently,American woman Katherine and a friend came across the bottle on a deserted beach in the Bahamas. Alongside it they found a life jacket. You can hardly avoid TV talk shows when you turn on the TV in the daytime. And anyone who watches them regularly knows that each one is different in style. But no two shows are more opposite in content, while at the same time standing out above the rest than the Jerry Springer and the Oprah Winfrey shows.
Jerry Springer could easily be considered the king of "rubbish talk". The contents on his show are as surprising as possible. For example, the show takes the forevercommon talk show titles of love, sex, cheating, and hate,to a different level. Clearly, the Jerry Springer show is about the dark side of society, yet people are willing to eat up the troubles of other people's lives.
Like Jerry Springer,Oprah Winfrey takes TV talk show to its top,but Oprah goes in the opposite direction. The show is mainly about the improvement of society and the quality of life. Contents are from teaching your children lessons, managing your work week,to getting to know your neighbors.
Compared with Oprah, the Jerry Springer show looks like poisonous waste being poured in?to society. Jerry ends every show with a " final word". He makes a small speech about the main idea of the show. Hopefully, this is the part where most people will learn something very valuable.
Clean as it is,the Oprah show is not for everyone. The show's main viewers are middle? class Americans. Most of these people have the time, money, and ability to deal with life's tough problems. Jerry Springer,on the other hand, has more of a connection with the young adults of society. These are 18-to-21-year-olds whose main troubles in life include love, rela?tionship, sex, money and drug. They are the ones who see some value and lessons to be learned through the show's exploitation.
( ) 1. Compared with other TV talk shows, both the Jerry Springer and the Oprah Winfrey shows are .
A. more inspiring B. more popular C. more positive D. more negative
( ) 2. What is the audience's reaction about the social problems that Jerry Springer talks about?
A. They are interested in them.
B. They are not ready to face them.
C. They are cold to them.
D. They want to get away from them.
( ) 3. Which of the following topics is a probable one for the Oprah show?
A. Cheating. B. Drug deal.
C. Single mum's happy life. D. A traffic accident.
( ) 4. From the passage we learn that the two talk shows .
A. have their own viewers
B. are the only ones of their kind
C. appear at different times of the day
D. explore weaknesses in human nature
