Celebrity Obsession Harming British Students David Beckham waves beside his wife Victoria at a party at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles July 22 ,2007.

An unhealthy obsession (沉迷,著魔) with celebrity culture is 1        the academic success of British students,a survey of teachers found on Friday, with celebrity 2        the Beckhams the favorite inspiration.

Many students are ignoring career"aspirations to 3        the chance of fame instead, the As?sociation of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) survey found.

Almost twothirds of teachers said 4        stars were the type of celebrity most pupils wanted to emulate (效法,盡力趕上) while more than half of students wanted to be 5        stars.

The celebrities students 6        to be most like, the 7       said, were Los Angelesbased David and Victoria Beckham,8      Britain's most famous couple.

Soccer player "Becks" topped the poll,9       more than half the teachers saying their students 10        themselves on the 32-year-old. In second place, with almost a third of the poll's vote, was his 33 yearold wife and pop star "Posh".

In an era of reality, television "stars" and a media fixation (褲好,病態(tài)的迷戀) with celebri?

ties,a majority of teachers said celebrity culture 11        impacted the aspirations of their pupils.

Almost half of the 300 teachers polled said pupils tried to look like and/or 12       like ce?lebrities they most 13       ,fuelling fears that girls particularly 14        in "unsuitable",or pro?vocative (刺激的,挑釁的,挑逗的) styles.

"We are not surprised about infiltration (浸潤(rùn),滲入) of celebrity culture in schools ― it 15        the current media obsession with celebrity and the effect of celebrity culture 16        soci?ety as a whole," ATL general secretary Mary Bousted said in a statement.

"Celebrities can have a 17       effect on pupils. They can raise pupils' aspirations and am?bitions for the future. However ... celebrity culture can perpetuate (使永存,使不朽) the notion that celebrity status is the greatest achievement and reinforces the 18        that other career op?tions are not 19      .”

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard ranked 20        on the favorites list with 26 percent,ac?tress Keira Knightley finished fourth (25 percent) .

Other celebrities on the list includedU.  S.heiress and socialite Paris Hilton (sixth) and Leona Lewis,a winner ofBritain's "The X Factor" television talent show (ninth) .

S Older people like reading negative news stories about their younger counterparts because it boosts their own selfesteem, according to a new study.

German researchers said older people tend to be portrayed (描繪成) negatively in society. Although they are often described as wise, they are also be shown as being slow and forgetful. "Living in a youth centered culture, they may appreciate a boost (增進(jìn)) in selfesteem. That's why they prefer the negative stories about younger people, who are seen as having a higher sta?tus in our society," said Dr. Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick,of Ohio State University.

Knobloch-Westerwick and her coauthor Matthias Hastall,of Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen,Germany, studied 276 German adults, including 178 aged 18 to 30 and 98 be?tween 55 and 60. Their findings are published in the Journal of Communication.

All the adults in the study were shown what they were led to believe was a test version of a new online news magazine. They were also given a limited time to look over either a negative or positive version of 10 preselected articles.

Each story was also paired with a photograph depicting someone of either the younger or the older age group.

The researchers found that older people were more likely to choose to read negative articles about those younger than themselves. They also tended to show less interest in articles about older people, whether negative or positive.

But younger people preferred to read positive articles about other young people.

According to Knobloch-Westerwick,older people's preference for negative news about their younger counterparts can be explained by their place in society.

"Everybody likes a selfesteem boost. For young people though,it's almost automatic. Youth is considered important in society”,she said.

After perusing the articles, the participants completed a questionnaire designed to measure levels of selfesteem. Unlike their younger counterparts, the selfesteem of older people rose after they read a negative article about younger people.

The first day of school our professor introduced a little old lady to us.

"Why are you in college at such a young age?" I asked later. She jokingly replied, " I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel."

"No seriously," I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age. "I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one! ”she told me.

We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class to?gether and talk nonstop. I was always listening to this " time machine" as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.

At the end of the semester we invited Rose to make a speech to our football team. I'll never forget what she taught us. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her note card on the floor. A little embarrassed she simply said, "I'm sorry. This whiskey is killing me!I'll never get my speech back in order to let me just tell you what I know."As we laughed she cleared her throat and began:" We do not stop playing because we are old;we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving suc?cess. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and don't even know it!There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did,but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets."

At the year's end Rose finished the college degree. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral to honor the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be.

   A. perseverance   B. hard working   C. resolution   D. determination

   A. She is actually a middleaged woman.

   B. She is quite a young woman.

   C. She is considerably an old woman.

   D. She is neither young nor old.

(   ) 3. What can we infer from the sentence "Why are you in college at such a young age?"?

   A. The writer asks frankly because he/she thinks Rose is really young.

   B. The writer asks jokingly because he/she knows Rose is really an old woman.

   C. The writer asks the question for sure because he/she doesn't know her real age.

   D. The writer asks the question because he/she thinks Rose is too young to learn.

(   ) 4. What is the best title for this passage?

   A. An Old Wonderful Woman Pursuing Her Dream

   B. No Matter How Old You Are,Never Give Up Learning

   C. Never Too Old to Learn

   D. A Good Student,A Good Example

Teaching children to read well from the start is the most important task of elementary schools. But relying on educators to approach this task correctly can be a great mistake. Many schools continue to employ instructional methods that have been proven ineffective. The staying power of the "looksay" or " wholeword" method of teaching beginning reading is perhaps the most flagrant example of this failure to instruct effectively.

The wholeword approach to reading stresses the meaning of words over the meaning of let?ters, thinking over decoding, developing a sight vocabulary of familiar words over developing the ability to unlock the pronunciation of unfamiliar words. It fits in with the selfdirected, "learning how to learn" activities recommended by advocates (倡導(dǎo)者) of "open" classrooms and with the concept that children have to be developmentally ready to begin reading. Before 1963,no major publisher put out anything but these "Run-Spot-Run" readers.

However,in 1955,Rudolf Resch touched off what has been called "the great debate" in beginning reading. In his bestseller Why Johnny Cant Read,Flesch indicted (控訴) the nation's public schools for miseducating students by using the looksay method. He said―and more scholarly studies by Jeane Chall and Rovert Dykstra later confirmed―that another approach to beginning reading, founded on phonics (語(yǔ)音學(xué)) ,is far superior.

Systematic phonics first teaches children to associate letters and letter combinations with sounds;it then teaches them how to blend these sounds together to make words. Rather than building up a relatively limited vocabulary of memorized words,it imparts a code by which the pronunciations of the vast majority of the most common words in the English language can be learned. Phonics does not devalue the importance of thinking about the meaning of words and sentences;it simply recognizes that decoding is the logical and necessary first step.

(   ) 1. What does the underlined phrase " touchedoff" most probably mean?

   A. Moved off. B. Set off. C. Took off. D. Droped off.

(   ) 2. The author accuses the "looksay" reading approach because         .

   A. it overlooks decoding

   B. some experts agree with him

   C. it devalues the useful phonics method

   D. many schools still use this method

(   ) 3. The difference between the looksay method and the phonics method is         .

   A. looksay is only logical and natural

   B. phonics is merely effective and reasonable

   C. looksay is easier to teach and reliable

   D. phonics gives readers access to far more words

(   ) 4. According to the passage, the better way of teaching children reading is         .

   A. "looksay" or "wholeword" method

   B. systematic phonics approach

   C. " learning how to learn" activities

   D. "Run-Spot-Run" method

Failing to drink enough water can make our brain shrink (萎縮) ,experts have warned. Re?search showed that dehydration not only affects the size of the brain but also how it works. Just 90 minutes of steady sweating (出汗) can shrink the brain as much as a year of aging, research?ers believe.

Being short of water, the brain is also forced to work harder to process the same informa?tion. Over days and weeks, lack of liquids could have an impact on performance at work and school, causing exam results to fall. But there is no need to panic, because after a glass of water or two,the brain quickly returns to normal.

A team of scientists from around the UK scanned the brains of teenagers after an hour and a half of cycling. Some exercised in three layers of clothing. Others were much more lightly dressed in shorts and T-shirts. The brain tissue (組織) of those who were wrapped up had shrunk away from their skulls (頭骨) .

Researchers Dr. Matthew Kempton and Ulrich Ettinger,of the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London, said; "It's clear that we saw a general shrinking of the brain tissue. Liquidfilled space in the middle of the brain expanded and there was a comparative shrinking of the brain tissue. The people who lost the most weight had the most shrinkage of the brain. " On average, the amount of shrinkage equated to 14 months of agerelated wear and tear,or the brain shrinking matched two and a half months of Alzheimer's disease (老年癡呆癥) .

The sweaty students did just as well when they were asked to play a computer game that tests the ability to plan and solve problems. But the scans showed they used more of their brain to do it,the journal Human Brain Mapping reports.

Professor Ben McGannan of the study's funder, water cooler firm of Water for Work and Home, said:" We strongly believed loss of water was an issue affecting students' performance, but we offered financial support for this research to give us clear evidence. Most importantly,we're seeking a way to get rid of the undesirable impacts and make up enough water effectively, such as drinking beers."

(   ) 5. What does the underlined word "dehydration" probably mean?

   A. Plenty of water.

   B. The inappropriate way to drink water.

   C. Great damage done to the brain.

   D. Dryness resulting from lack of water.

(   ) 6. Without enough water,          .

   A. it is hard for the brain to think normally

   B. the body can't sweat in time

   C. people will suffer from ageing

   D. the liquidfilled space will disappear

(   ) 7. What do Professor Ben McGannan's words suggest?

   A. We should make effort to take good care of our brain.

   B. More research is needed to solve the brain's loss of water.

   C. Drinking beers is the best way to make up water in the body.

   D. Students must drink enough water to improve their performance.

(   ) 8. What subject is talked in the passage?

   A. The brain structure. B. Exercise and the brain.

   C. Lack of water in the brain. D. The importance of water.
