Humanity uses a little less than half the water available worldwide. Yet occurrences of shortages and droughts (干旱) are causing famine and distress in some areas, and industrial and agricultural by-products are polluting water supplies. Since the world’s population is expected to double in the next 50 years, many experts think we are on the edge of a widespread water crisis.
But that doesn’t have to be the outcome. Water shortages do not have to trouble the world---if we start valuing water more than we did in the past. Just as we began to appreciate petroleum more after the 1970s oil crises, today we must start looking at water from a fresh economic perspective. We can no longer afford to consider water a virtually free resource of which we can use as much as we like in any way we want.
Instead, for all uses except the domestic demand of the poor, governments should price water to reflect its actual value. This means charging a fee for the water itself as well as for the supply costs.
Governments should also protect this resource by providing water in more economically and environmentally sound (健康的) ways. For example, often the cheapest way to provide irrigation water in the dry tropics is through small-scale projects, such as gathering rainfall in depressions (凹地) and pumping it to nearby cropland.
No matter what steps governments take to provide water more efficiently, they must change their institutional and legal approaches to water use. Rather than spread control among hundreds or even thousands of local, regional, and national agencies that watch various aspects of water use, countries should set up central authorities to coordinate (調(diào)整) water policy.
小題1:What is the real cause of the potentials water crisis.
A.Only half of the world’s water can be used.
B.The world population is increasing faster and faster.
C.Half of the world’s water resources have been seriously polluted.
D.Humanity has not placed enough value on water resources.
小題2:As is indicated in the passage, the water problem _________ .
A.is already serious in certain parts of the world.
B.has been exaggerated by some experts in the field
C.poses a challenge to the technology of building reservoirs(水庫(kù))
D.is underestimated by government organizations at different levels
小題3: According to the author, the water price should _______ .
A.be reduced to the minimumB.stimulate domestic demand
C.go with its real valueD.take into account the occurrences of droughts
小題4:In order to raise the efficiency of the water supply, measures should be taken to ______ .
A.guarantee full protection of the environment
B.centralize the management of water resources
C.increase the sense of responsibility of agencies at all levels
D.encourage local and regional water resources

We use the Internet for many things: business, shopping, writing letters, talking to people, finding information and so on. In recent years, a new kind of English has grown on the Internet. There’s no real word for it yet, so we’ll call it e-talk. People don’t like typing too much. To save time, they turn phrases into a few letters (called acronyms). Acronyms are often used in chat rooms(聊天室). Some of them are:
BTW(by the way);  BRB(be right back);  LOL(laughing out loud);  IMO(in my opinion)
People also use many abbreviations. They are shortened forms of words. Some common abbreviations are:
info(information);   puter(computer);    pic(picture);     sec(second)
We ususally don’t see people when we communicate on the Internet, so people have new ways to show feelings. Most people use their keyboards to draw “feelings”, such as:
:-) (happy);     ;-)(joking);        :-((sad);       :-O(surprised)
These days, many forums(論壇)have picture feelings. For example:

(happy)              (sad)               (angry)               (cool)
There are even whole new words, like ”newbie’s” (someone who is new on a chat board or forum). When you write something bad about someone else, it’s called “flaming” the person.
It takes time for people to get used to e-talk. Also, different groups on the Net have their own special ways of communicating. Newbie’s sometimes have to ask other people what they mean. As the Internet grows, e-talk will continue to grow and change.
小題1:Why do people type acronyms?

What is Math Anxiety?
Math anxiety or fear of math is actually quite common. Math anxiety is quite   36 to stage-fright. Why does someone suffer   37 ? Fear of something going wrong in front of a crowd? Fear of   38 the lines? Fear of being judged   39 ? Fear of going completely blank? Math anxiety conjures(使現(xiàn)出) up fear of some type. The fear that one won’t be able to do the   40 or the fear that it’s too hard or the fear of failure which often stems(起因于) from having a lack of  41 . For the most part, math anxiety is the   42 about doing the math right, our minds draw a   43 and we think we’ll fail and of course the more frustrated and anxious our minds become, the  44 the chance for drawing blanks. Added pressure of having time limits on math tests and exams also cause the levels of anxiety to grow for many students.
Where Does Math Anxiety Come From?
Usually math anxiety stems(起源于) from   45 experiences in mathematics. Typically math phobias(恐慌癥) have had math presented in such a fashion that it led to limited understanding. Unfortunately, math anxiety is often   46  poor teaching and poor experiences in math which typically leads to math  47 . Many of the students I’ve encountered with math anxiety have demonstrated an over reliance on procedures in math as opposed to actually understanding the math. When one tries to memorize procedures, rules and routines without much   48 , the math is quickly forgotten and   49 soon sets in. Think about your experiences with one concept — the division of fractions(分?jǐn)?shù)). You probably learned about reciprocals(倒數(shù)) and inverses. In other words, ‘It’s not yours to reason why, just invert(反轉(zhuǎn)) and multiply(乘)’. Well, you memorized the rule and it   50  . Why does it work? Do you really understand why it works? Did anyone ever use pizzas or math manipulative(巧妙處理的) to show you why it works? If   51  , you simply memorized the procedure and that was that. Think of math as memorizing all the procedures —   52 if you forget a few? Therefore, with this type of strategy, a good  53 will help, but, what if you don’t have a good memory. Understanding the math is critical. Once students   54 they can do the math, the whole notion of math anxiety can be overcome. Teachers and parents have an important   55 to ensure students understand the math being presented to them.

It is time for students to sell such things as chocolate bars and greeting cards to raise money for their school, class or club.It is inevitable that they will knock on your door and you will easily hand over your cash for overpriced items that you really do not want. That is okay, though, because there are many reasons why children should be allowed to raise money for their schools and clubs.
Fundraising is a great way to help children learn social skills. It is not easy to go up to a complete stranger and ask him for his money. They have to nicely ask for help, show the interested buyer what they have to offer and explain how it will help them in school. If someone refuses to buy an item, that child has to take the failure in stride(不特別費(fèi)力地), and that is a learning lesson as well.
Students can learn how to deal with money by fundraising.Of course, it might seem safer for us to take charge of our children’s earnings from their fundraising before it is turned into the school. However, by making them keep track of it, count it, and make sure everyone pays the right amount, they are learning an important lesson.Dealing with more Fundraising helps improve their schools. It is the children’s school. They have to learn there and grow there. Why not let them help in making it a better place?
Fundraising allows for more life experiences for the child. The raised money is used towards things like parties, trips, or for the music club to go to see a Broadway play. The children receive the rewards for their hard work at raising the money.Without fundraising, these field trips and special school memories would be missed.

Shopping in the United States changes a lot.About ninety years ago most people shopped in small stores that were owned by one person or a family.Women went from the bakery to the butcher's to the grocer and on to the fruit and vegetable seller in order to get their food for the week.
Then about sixty years ago, supermarkets were born.In a supermarket, people could get all the different kinds of food they needed without going to different stores.
The next big change in shopping in the United States was the shopping mall.A shopping mall is a group of stores under one roof.Because malls allowed people to shop without worrying about the weather, they soon became very popular. The mall became a place for people to socialize in addition to shopping. If you walk through a mall, you will see older people sitting, chatting and drinking coffee.Malls are places for teenagers to hang out. Many teens will often just "go to the mall" and spend time with their friends.
The recent change in American shopping was the superstore.Large chain stores such as Wal-Mart, Office Depot and Toys "R" Us have been built all across the United States.Because they are so large, they can buy goods at a great discount and sell them much cheaper than smaller stores.
Sometimes, when they are built near small towns, many of the small town stores have to close. They just cannot compete with their giant neighbors.
And now, online shopping is becoming more and more popular all over the States.People are too busy to go to the physical stores, so they go shopping over the Internet.Online shopping has lots of advantages. For instance, online stores are usually available 24 hours a day.Searching or browsing online shops can be faster than browsing the physical stores. While, online shopping also has its disadvantages.People are at higher risk of being cheated on the part of the merchant than in a physical store. And privacy of personal information may be let out.

Even before they start school, many young girls worry that they are fat. But a new study suggests watching a movie starring a stereotypically(模式化地)thin and beautiful princess may not increase children’s anxieties.
Nearly half of the 3 to 6 year old girls in a study by Professor Stacey Tantleff-Dunn and doctoral student Sharon Hayes said they worry about being fat. About one-third would change a physical feature, such as their weight or hair color.
The number of girls worried about being fat at such a young age concerns Tantleff-Dunn because of the potential effects later in life. Studies have shown young girls worried about their body image are more likely to suffer from eating disorders when they are older.
The encouraging news for parents is that taking their young daughters to see the new Disney film “The Princess and the Frog” isn’t likely to influence how they see their bodies.
“The media have a great effect on how young girls see their bodies. That’s why it’s important for parents to use movies such as ‘The Princess and the Frog,’ to start conversations with their children about weight, skin color and their views of beauty. They can explain that princesses’ tiny waists are not realistic for girls and that children don’t need Cinderella’s golden hair or Snow White’s porcelain(瓷制的) skin to look good,” Tantleff-Dunn said.
“We need to help our children challenge the images of beauty, particularly thinness, that they see and idolize, and encourage them to question how much appearance should be part of their self-worth,” said Tantleff-Dunn. “We should help them build a positive self-image with an appreciation for many different types of body features.” And as their children’s most important role models, parents also should avoid criticizing their own bodies.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:不詳 題型:閱讀理解

Fear and its companion pain are two of the most useful things that men and animals possess, if they are properly used. If fire did not hurt when it burnt, children would play with it until their hands were burnt away. Similarly, if pain existed but fear didn’t, a child would burn himself or herself again and again, because fear would not warn himself or herself to keep away from the fire that had burnt himself or herself before. A really fearless soldier—and some do exist is not a good soldier because he is soon killed; and a dead soldier is of no use to his army. Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which men and animals might soon die out.
In our first sentence we suggested that fear should be properly used. If, for example, you never go out of your house because of the danger of being knocked down and killed in the street by a car, you are letting fear rule you too much. Even in your house you are not absolutely safe: an aeroplane may crash on your house, or ants may eat away some of the beams in your roof so that the latter falls on you, or you may get cancer!
The important thing is not to let fear rule you, but instead to use fear as your servant and guide. Fear will warn you of dangers; then you have to decide what action to take.
In many cases, you can take quick and successful action to avoid the danger. For example, you see a car coming straight towards you. Fear warns you, you jump out of the way, and all is well.
In some cases, however, you decide that there is nothing that you can do to avoid the danger. For example, you can’t prevent an aeroplane crashing onto your house. In this case, fear has given you its warning; you have examined it and decided on your course of action, so fear of this particular danger is no longer of any use to you, and you have to try to overcome it.
小題1:Children would play with fire until their hands were burnt away if _________.
A.they were given no warning beforehand
B.they had never burnt themselves
C.they had no sense of painD.they were fearful of the fire
小題2: A really fearless soldier _____________.
A.is of great use to the armyB.is not a real soldier
C.is nothing but a dead soldierD.easily gets killed in a battle
小題3:People sometimes succeed in timely avoiding the danger because _________.
A.they have gained experienceB.they jump out of the way in time
C.they are calm in the face of danger
D.they are warned of the danger by fear and take quick action
小題4:What's the writer's suggestion when the danger can't be avoided?
A.You have to try to overcome it.B.Fear can really help you to run away.
C.Fear always helps you stay safe.D.Fear is of great use to you.
