In business, there is a speed difference: It's the difference between how important a firms leaders say speed is to their competitive (競(jìng)爭(zhēng)的) strategy(策略)and how fast the company actually moves. The difference is important regardless of industry and company size .Companies fearful of losing their competitive advantage spend much time and money looking for ways to pick up the speed. In our study of 343 businesses, the companies that choose to go, go, go to try to gain an edge ended up with lower sales and operating incomes than those that paused at key moments to make sure they were on the right track, What’s more, the firms that “slowed down to speed up “improved their top and bottom lines, averaging 40% higher sales and 52% higher operating incomes over a three-year period. How did they disobey the laws of business physics, taking more time than competitors yet performing better? They thought differently about what “slower” and “faster” mean. Firms sometimes fail to understand the difference between operation speed (moving quickly )and strategic speed (reducing the time it takes to deliver value ).Simply increasing the speed of production, for example ,may be one way to try to reduce the speed difference .But that often leads to reduced value over time, in the form of lower-quality products and services. In our study, higher-performing companies with strategic speed always made changes when necessary. They became more open to ideas and discussion. They encouraged new ways of thinking. And they allowed time to look back and learn. By contrast (相比而言), performance suffered at firms that moved fast all the time, paid too much attention to improving efficiency, stuck to tested methods, didn’t develop team spirit among their employees, and had little time thinking about changes. Strategic speed serves as a kind of leadership. Teams that regularly take time to get things right , rather than plough ahead full bore , are more successful in meeting their business goals . That kind of strategy must come from the top. 小題1: What does the underlined part “gain an edge ”in Paragraph 2 mean ? A.Increase the speed. | B.Get an advantage. | C.Reach the limit. | D.Set a goal. |
小題2:. The underlined part “the laws of business physics” in Paragraph 3 means ___________. A.spending more time and performing worse. | B.spending more time and performing better | C.spending less time and performing worse | D.spending less time and performing better |
小題3:What can we learn from the text? A.how fast a firm moves depends on how big it is. | B.how competitive a firm is depends on what it produces. | C.Firms guided by strategic speed take time to make necessary changes. | D.Firms guided by operational speed take time to develop necessary team spirit. |
小題4:. Which could be the best title for the text? A.Improve quality? Serve better. | B.Deliver value? Plough ahead. | C.Reduce time? Move faster. | D.Need speed? Slow down. |

A motivational strategy that parents can employ with their kids, is to frame tasks and responsibilities in the context of what the end benefit is for them.I call this strategy WIIFM ("What's in it for me?" ). When a teen can combine an understanding of WIIFM with a sense of passion about achieving a goal, barriers will start to fall away.At our teen summer camps, we arrange an event near the end of the 10-day session that helps campers identify an important life goal and mentally break through their biggest barrier to achieving the goal. We pass around 12-by-12-inch pine boards. We tell campers that this activity is not about breaking a piece of wood. It's about how you can get what you want in your life. It's about breaking barriers to grab on to your goals. They have the power to break through any barrier. It has nothing to do with body size or physical condition. The skinniest, smallest teens will break through the board almost as easily as the big ones. We talk to the campers about the reasons they might have had for not reaching their goals in the past.Maybe they got lazy and decided it wasn't worth the effort.Maybe they failed and let their fear of failure hold them back. But this exercise is about putting the past where it belongs.Today is about making new choices. By this point in the program, we ask them to think of the goal they've set or themselves and write their goals on the boards. Then they write the possible obstacles which may hold them back on the opposite sides. An inch of pine now stands between them and their dreams. The facilitators and their teammates gather around. The support is strong. One by one, they break through the barriers and grab their goals! All around us teens are laughing, crying, hugging, and holding up the broken pieces of their boards. The confidence shown on their faces is beautiful. While arranging such an activity in one's home is almost unrealistic for parents, the value of helping a teen break through a personal hairier simply by being there as moral support can not be overestimated.More help for parents in the form of videos and articles is available at our website, in our blogs and in a monthly e-newsletter. 小題1:The 12-by-12-inch pine boards are used as ______. Parents, our first teachers, play a highly significant role in our lives. However, doesn't it seem that many of us come to have conflicts with them when we start high school? We're less likely to listen to them and take their suggestions—we even rebel against them. Why? It may be the so-called "generation gap".A generation gap appears when we begin to feel our parents are ignoring us, don't understand us, and we feel we can no longer share our feelings with them. The key reason is our desire for independence. In senior high school, we start to want to take responsibility for our own lives and make our own decisions. But parents resist this. They still want to control us and try to force us to do things they think we should do.Debate and discussion often come to nothing.Gradually, we talk with them less, and keep our feelings locked up inside. Zhang Xiaoyun, 16, of Ningbo, Zhejiang, has talked less and less with her mother since she started senior high school."She believes studies should be my priority, not my inner world," Zhang said."Each day, she asks me the same old questions like, 'How was your last exam? or 'Have you made any progress in physics?" To Zhang, these questions are annoying and so she always tries to ignore them and answers perfunctorily."Sometimes, when I get upset, I quarrel with her. After, she comes to apologize and comfort me.But I know, she doesn't completely understand me," Zhang said. Now, a home that was once full of laughter has fallen into gloom and silence. The generation gap can be harmful.Because of the lack of communication, our parents no longer know what we are thinking about. There are quarrels, even over trivial things. When that happens, we may not be able to concentrate on our studies. Some of us even become afraid to go home after school— a very serious situation for the whole family. 小題1:Which of the following is not included in article? There have been great changes in the lives of women. During the twentieth century ,there was an unusual shortening of the time of a woman’s life spent in caring for children. A woman marrying at the end of the 19th century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to hav e about eight children, of whom about five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which custom, chance and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and is likely to take paid work until retirement at sixty. Even while she has the care of children, her work is lightened by household appliances(家用電器) and convenience(方便) foods. This important change in women’s way of life has only recently begun to have its full effect on women’s economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school at the first opportunity and most of them took a full-time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen, many girls stay at school after that age, and though women tend to marry younger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Very many more afterwards, return to full or part-time work. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with both husband and wife accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfaction of family life, and with both husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money and running the home, according to the abilities and interest of each them. 小題1:Women marrying at the end of the 19th century ________. Many people think that the BBC news programs are better than those on other channels because the BBC is not a commercial company. It pays for its programs from the television license money which everyone must pay if they have a television. Increasingly ,over the past ten years ,people—especially young people—have become aware of the need to change their eating habits ,because much of the food they eat ,particularly processed foods ,is not good for the health .As a result ,there has been a growing interest in natural foods :foods which do not contain chemical fertilizers ,widely used in farming today . Natural foods ,for example ,are vegetables ,fruit and grain which have been grown in soil that is rich in organic(有機(jī)的)matter . In simple terms ,this means that the soil has been nourished by unused vegetable matter ,which provides it with essential vitamins and minerals. This in itself is a natural process compared with the use of chemicals and fertilizers , the main purpose of which is to increase the amount—but not the quality—of food grown in commercial farming areas . Natural foods also include animals which have been allowed to feed and move freely in healthy grassland for cattle .Compare this with what happens in the mass production of poultry (家禽):there are battery farms ,for example ,where thousands of chickens live crowded together in one building and are fed on food which is little better than rubbish .Chickens kept in this way are not only tasteless as food; they also produce eggs which lack important vitamins . There are other things of healthy eating which are now receiving increasing attention from experts on diet .Take ,for example ,the question of sugar .This is actually a non-essential food! Although another natural food ,such as honey ,can be used to sweeten food if this is necessary ,we can in fact do without it .It is not that sugar is harmful in itself .But it does seem to be addictive : the quantity we use has grown steadily over the last two centuries and in Britain today each person consumes an average of 200 pounds a year !Yet all it does is provide us with energy ,in the form of calories .There are no vitamins in it ,no minerals ,and no fibre . It’s very important that nowadays fibre is considered to be an important part of a healthy diet .In white bread ,for example ,the fibre has been removed .But it is present in unrefined flour and of course in vegetables .It is interesting to note that in countries where the national diet contains large quantities of unrefined flour and vegetables ,certain diseases are comparatively not often seen .For this reason ,the importance is placed on the eating of wholemeal(沒(méi)有去麩的面粉)bread and more vegetables by modern experts on “healthy eating”. 小題1:People have become more interested in natural foods because . A.they want to keep fit | B.they want to taste all kinds of foods | C.natural foods are more delicious than processed foods | D.they want to return to nature |
小題2:Chickens raised in poultry farms are all of the following EXCEPT that . A.they are fed on food which is little better than garbage | B.they live in very crowed condition | C.the eggs they produce lack vitamins | D.they are allowed to move about and eat freely |
小題3:According to the passage,_________. A.people need sugar to give them energy | B.sugar is bad for the health | C.the use of sugar is habit forming | D.sugar only sweetens food, but provides us with nothing useful |
