As the sound of footsteps behind her grew louder, she quickened her pace. She didn’t want to turn around as the memory of that morning’s newspaper headline made her afraid of what she would see : “City Killer Claims Fourth Victim.”
“Why did I stop for a few drinks in the bar after work?” she thought to herself. Now it was dark and the streets deserted. She was alone and a sitting duck.
She felt as if she was walking in the rain. Her clothes were damp from nervous sweat and as each short hot breath hit the night air, it turned to steam, coating her glasses in a thin film so all she saw seemed covered in fog.
The footsteps were closer now She needed to get off this street Her eyes began a useless search for an open store or lighted window Passing a small lane she looked through, for a possible escape route. But the lane was a dead - end and she laughed to herself at the irony.
The sound of a car behind her turning onto the street interrupted her self - pity Escape was at hand. But as she was about to throw herself onto the road and shout for the calf to stop, the car’s headlights cast a shadow that paralyzed her with terror.
It was the footsteps’ owner. The figure was huge and in its raised arm it held what looked like a lead-pipe, no doubt the one that was about to claim victim number five.
The shadow dissolved as the car passed by and disappeared into the distance. She felt a hand on her shoulder. It was all happening as if in slow – motion. She was waiting for her life to flash before her eyes like all those novels said it would – but it didn’t. The only thing she thought of was her dear husband. She recalled phoning him from work that very afternoon and joking about, of all things, the city killer. It was a night full of ironies.
There was a voice talking to her now but she was lost in thoughts of her fate and didn’t respond. The hand then began turning her around. It was surprisingly gentle given what was about to come. She allowed it to guide her without resistance.
She looked up. She recognized the face, but she didn’t know from where. Its mouth was still talking to her but she couldn’t understand. Then she remembered. The face belonged to the foreign looking man who had served her at the bar. She looked down to his hand and saw in it not a lead – pipe but a rolled up copy of a work report she had been correcting in the bar as she drank.
His words suddenly started to register in her brain and she could her him. “Miss, Miss. Are you OK? You left this in the bar and it looked important so I thought I’d better give it to you.”

Do you like sitting on the edge of your seat? How about falling off it laughing? If so, "Rush Hour 1" is the perfect movie for you. Although it didn’t get the best reviews, it is perfect for those who like a good comedy.
Just as in the first "Rush Hour," Inspector Lee (Jackie Chan) and LAPD Detective James Carter (Chris Tucker) are partners. This time, they are on vacation in China and Carter is looking for a good time, but they are on the job again when a bombing at the American Embassy kills two customs agents. Lee and Carter go to look for a suspect named Ricky Tan. For Lee this is a serious case because Tan killed his father. Will Carter and Lee be able to capture Tan?
Another reason to see this movie perhaps is for the thrilling action, which includes karate fights with Jackie Chan. One of my favorite scenes shows Carter and Lee in a massage parlor (店堂) when everything goes crazy.
"Rush Hour 2" is, of course, really funny with Chris Tucker in the lead role. Chan and Tucker have many clever jokes and remarks. Some of the jokes aren’t enjoyed by the critics, but most will find them entertaining.
With no doubt, the movie was great. I was filled with anxiety about what was going to happen next. Many critics say that sequels (續(xù)集) are not as good as the original but this one is great. I especially enjoyed it because the special effects are minimal so everything looks as though it actually happened. The lighting effect is great as well as the sound.
So, if you are looking for a great action movie that leaves you at the edge of your seat and makes you laugh quite a bit, you should rush to see “Rush Hour 2.”

Robots that can chat, find misplaced glasses, draw aeroplanes and play with your children are drawing thousands of visitors’ attention during an expo in Tokyo as Japan adapts to changes in society.
Robots, such as the sound?sensitive Chapit, answer simple questions and even joke with people to help the lonely fight loneliness and stay active in old age.
“Many older people in Japan live alone and have no one to talk to,” said Kazuya Kitamura,a representative of the expo organizer.“Communication robots accompany people and don’t mind listening to the same stories over and over again.”
While Chapit,a relatively simple robot, managed to allure a corporate partner, many researchers, such as Kiyoshi Matsumoto,a professor at the University of Tokyo, struggle to interest sponsors for more expensive projects.
Matsumoto’s “Personal Mobility Robot”,equipped with four cameras and a sensor to recognize the user’s centre of gravity,is designed to help the elderly move around without pressing buttons, using joysticks(操縱桿) or rotating(轉(zhuǎn)動(dòng)) wheels as in traditional wheelchairs.
The robot can also help find misplaced glasses by identifying them with a sensor.
“We have developed a robot that can assist many people, but because of the high cost,we still haven’t found a sponsor,”said Matsumoto, who added that the cost of the machine,if mass?produced, would be comparable to that of a car.
“In the current economic environment there are few companies willing to invest in such a costly project,” he said.
Other robots, such as the award?winning “DiGRO” can support busy parents who have little time to play with their children.
The robot can use the Internet to find a simple image and then draw pictures, keeping children company while their parents work.
Japan has one of the world’s fastest?ageing societies and the government predicts that by 2050 the proportion of people over 65 will reach 40 percent.
1.The underlined word “allure” in Paragraph 4 can be replaced by ________.
A.strike? B.exclude
C.connect? D.attract
2.Personal Mobility Robot can help people ________.
A.find misplaced glasses
B.move around with pressing buttons
C.use joysticks
D.rotate wheels
3.It is difficult to find sponsors for the robots because ________.
A.Japan is suffering economy depression
B.the robots are of poor design
C.the production of robots costs a lot
D.the future market is worrying
4.It can be inferred from the text that ________.
A.many children lack love from parents
B.robots helpful to the old will be in great demand
