Milk was one of the main human foods long before history was written. It will probably remain one as long as there are animals that give milk. The old word “milk” came from Sanskrit(梵文), one of the oldest languages known to man.A very old picture of milking, which was drawn five thousand years ago, has been found.

In the past, years long ago, people got their milk from their own animals. But in modern times new inventions made the milk industry a big business. In 1851 Gall Borden found a way to take some of the water from milk. This made milk keep longer.Four years later, Louis Pasteur introduced a way to kill the bacteria(細(xì)菌)in milk.Next a special milk bottle was made. This was followed by the invention of machines that could fill bottles with milk. These discoveries had a great effect on the milk industry. They meant that milk could be stored longer.

Some people believe that milk drinking will become less popular than it has been. But remember how long milk has been an important food and think of the many ways in which it is useful. It seems safe to say that the milk industry will always be important.

The Changing Role of American Women

In the early 1900s, most Americans lived on farms. Women usually got up long before the sun to milk cow, gather eggs and prepare a big breakfast. During the day, they did a lot of housework. They sometimes worked in the fields with their husbands.

During the next fifty years, however, life in America changed greatly. Most people moved from farms into cities or towns where the husband had a job in an office, store or factory. In the 1940sand 1950s most women continued to work at home, taking care of the house and children, doing the washing and cooking. During the 1960s more and more women began to work outside their homes. By 1980 more than 60% of all American women between the ages of 18 and 54 had jobs. At first, most women worked only if their income (收入) was needed because of the death or illness of their husbands, but later women began to work by choice. As automation (自動化) took over many of the jobs at home and as the husband spent long hours on the work, some women found less fulfillment (成就) in housework. An increase (增加) in the divorce rate (離婚率) also pushed more women into labor force (勞動力). By 1980, 8.5 million American families were headed by women with no husband present (在場的).

Like Chinese women, American women have always worked either on the farms, in their homes or in the workplace. As we enter a new century, American women find their role (作用) in society has greatly improved. Many choices open to them now. Many are entering the professions (職業(yè)) and occupying (占據(jù)) key positions (關(guān)鍵位置) in politics, business and education, and their number continues to grow.

1.Why did life in America change greatly during the 1950s?

[ ]

A.Husband hated the farm work and moved from farms into cities.

B.Women had jobs in an office, store, and factory.

C.Men found jobs in cities, so many families moved into cities.

D.Automation took over many of the housework.

2.In the 1980s, why did most women get jobs at first?

[ ]

A.Their income was needed to support the family.

B.Their parents moved in with them.

C.They needed more money because they had more children.

D.They could make more money than men.

3.Why did more women get jobs later on?

[ ]

A.They could make more money than men.

B.Housework became less creative and they wanted more fulfillment.

C.Many companies provided day care for their children.

D.Their husbands were ill.

4.In 1980 about how many families were headed by women with no husband present?

[ ]

A.85,000.

B.850,000.

C.8,500,000.

Today, ultrasonic(超聲的)waves are being put to work in laboratories and factories. If an ultrasound generator is placed in a liquid, the waves move the liquid back and forthhundreds of thousands of times each second. This causes materials to mix quickly or to dissolve(使分解,使溶解)in liquids.Paint manufacturers(制造商)use ultrasound to do a better job of blending colors. The companies that make film for your camera find that mixing chemicals by the use of sound waves will produce a more sensitive film.

The new lightweight(輕量的)type of washing machine uses ultrasonic waves to get clothes clean. Its special ultrasound generator is put into a pail of soapy water containing the soiled clothes. The sound waves drive the soapy water back and forth through the cloth so fast that everything is soon clean. There is also a new kind of dishwasher that works in much the same way.

Ultrasonic waves can shake a liquid so fast that tiny holes form all through it.The liquid is actually torn apart by this action.Almost as soon as these holes are made, they fall together again. The result is a powerful pounding action. In the dairy industry this is used for the double purpose of making homogenized(使均勻,使勻質(zhì))milk and sterilizing(使無菌)it at the same time.If you look at some raw milk with a microscope, you find that it is made up of little drops of butter fat floating around in a watery liquid. In order to make milk easier to digest, these fat droplets(微粒)may be broken up by forcing the milk through very small openings. The result is called homogenized milk. When the ultrasonic method is used, the sound waves not only break up the droplets but also kill the germs in the milk by pounding them to pieces.

(1)

Why does a paint manufacturer use ultrasound to do a better job of blending colors?

[ ]

A.

Because it is cheap to use ultrasound to blend colors.

B.

Because the waves move the liquid so quickly that it can make materials mix quickly or dissolve in liquids.

C.

Because they can mix chemicals by the use of sound waves.

D.

Because the waves can clean the paint.

(2)

What properties does ultrasound wave have?

[ ]

A.

Homogenizes and sterilizes the milk.

B.

Mix materials and break droplets.

C.

Kill germs and sterilize milk.

D.

Move liquids quickly.

(3)

What exists in the raw milk?

[ ]

A.

Little drops of butter fat.

B.

Small holes.

C.

Fat droplets and germs.

D.

Chemicals.

(4)

Where is ultrasound wave not used?

[ ]

A.

In the paint manufacture.

B.

In the shop mixing bread flour.

C.

In the film-making company.

D.

In the dairy industry.
