Two University of Colorado professors said they have demonstrated(證明) the teachers’ use of red pens in marking corrections and grading papers often affects students negatively and destroys teacher-student relationships.

News. Com. Au and ABC Science reported a paper by University of Colorado sociologists Richard Dukes and Healther Albanesi documenting their new study was published in The Social Science Journal, and that some educators have expressed doubt about the team’s findings.

The Colorado study suggested that because red is an “emotive” color expressing an exciting emotion, corrections penned in red ink were more likely to be seen by students as “shouting”, an “emotional loading” that could cause anxiety or feelings of blame against the teacher and lead to rejection of otherwise constructive feedback. Instead, teachers should use blue pens to mark papers, Richard Dukes and Healther Albanesi concluded.

ABC Science reported that students whose papers were graded with blue ink tended to give teachers higher scores.

But a University of British Colombia study published in the journal Science found both blue and red affected motivation and performance, with red attracting attention and blue increasing creativity, Science Daily reported.

This passage states a study about whether teachers usual use of red pens in marking corrections and grading papers could have bad effects on students. The opinions are obviously different.

Generally speaking, most teachers mark corrections or grade students papers in red pens. Some people think it may make students anxious thus blaming their teachers. However some people think it can attract students attention. As for me, I am used to correcting or grading my assignments in red pens, so it makes no difference whether my teachers use red pens or blue pens. If teachers can give us comments on the corrections, we will benefit a lot.

Whats more, teachers check over our assignments every day, which is a good bridge for us to communicate with each other. In this case we can learn from our errors, get encouragement and make progress in our study. So we will respect our teachers hard work, no matter whether they use red pens or not.

It was once unheard-of to be a businessman in China. Nowadays, though, it’s quite common to become your own boss. Let’s say you have an idea. Maybe you want to open an English school or sell Japanese comics. First, you need a business plan. It sets out what you’ll sell and how much everything will cost. Most businesses that fail didn’t have this. If you need to borrow money at the start, banks will ask for a detailed plan.

The best starting place for a business plan is the 4Ps: product, place, price and promotion. All these must be strong to be successful.

□Product

Your product must have something unique. What makes it special compared to other similar products? If you want to start a noodle shop that has nothing new, don’t expect people to show much interest. You can research your product. For food, let people try it for free. For toys, let a few children play with them to see if they like them.

□Place

There’s no point having a product that people want to buy if your shop is in an empty mall. Think about which type of person is going to buy what you sell. Where do they usually go shopping? When looking at possible places, spend the day there. See how many people pass by. Also, are there other shops nearby selling similar products? If so, how can you be better than them?

□Price

Work out how much it costs to make or provide your product. As a general rule, your price will be double the cost. After all, you’re also paying for rent, staff and you need to eat too!

□Promotion

How can you attract people to your shop? Advertising in newspapers and on TV is expensive. Perhaps you can get free advertising by getting a newspaper to write about your business.

A. There are shops selling the goods like yours.

B. Many people pass by.

C. You should think about which type of person is going to buy what you sell.

D. You should spend the day on possible places.

5.You are selling toys to children. It costs 5 yuan to make each one. How much should you charge the children for each toy?

A. 15 yuan.B. 5 yuan.C. 10 yuan.D. 50 yuan.

President Barack Obama has complained about the loss of privacy that comes with being leader of the United States, regretting the loss of simple pleasures such as a long walk or a trip to the car wash or supermarket.

“I just miss---I miss being anonymous,” he said. “I miss Saturday morning, rolling out of bed, not shaving, getting into my car with my girls, driving to the supermarket, squeezing the fruit, getting my car washed, taking walk. I can't take a walk”.

His dream, he said, was to “go through Central Park and watch for passing by…spend the day watching people --- I miss that”.

Faced with angry criticism for playing more golf than most previous occupants of the White House, he explained that the sport was simply the best way of getting away from it all. “It's the only excuse I have to get outside for four hours.” he told Hearst magazines.

Though he said he enjoyed his life in the White House, he felt disappointed with some of the ways of Washington, which he has failed in his permission to change, such as the "kabuki dance" among political parties before serious policy discussions begin. His comments may be seen as vindication(證實(shí))by critics who have accused him of appearing too detached(漠然), and being slow to engage in vital issues such as Libya and the near shutdown of the US government last week.

Since arriving at the White House in January 2009, Mr. Obama has already racked up 60 rounds of golf in office, more than George W Bush did in his eight years. In terms of ability, Golf Digest magazine has ranked Mr. Obama eighth out of the 18 presidents who played the game since it became established in the early 20th century.

1.What do the second paragraph and the third paragraph mainly tell us?

A. Obama likes living a busy life.

B. Obama used to spend most of his time with his family.

A. release his pressure B. keep fit

C. balance his work D. show his ability

3.We can infer from the passage that Obama is kabuki dance.

A year ago August, Dave Fuss lost his job driving a truck for a small company in west Michigan. His wife, Gerrie, was still working in the local school cafeteria, but work for Dave was scarce, and the price of everything was rising. The Fusses were at risk of joining the millions of Americans who have lost their homes in recent years. Then Dave and Gerrie received a timely gift--7,000, a legacy  (遺產(chǎn))  from their neighbors Ish and Arlene Hatch who died in an accident. “It really made a difference when we were going under financially,” says Dave.

But the Fusses weren’t the only folks in Alto and the neighboring town of Lowell to receive unexpected legacy from the Hatches. Dozens of other families were touched by the Hatches’ generosity. In some cases, it was a few thousand dollars; in others, it was more than 100,000.

It surprised nearly everyone that the Hatches had so much money, more than 3 million--they were an elderly couple who lived in an old house on what was left of the family farm.

Children of the Great Depression, Ish and Arlene were known for their habit of saving. They liked comparison shopping and would routinely go from store to store, checking prices before making a new purchase.

Through the years, the Hatches paid for local children to attend summer camp when their parents couldn’t afford it. “Ish and Arlene never asked if you needed anything.” says their friend Sandy Van Weelden. “They could see things they could do to make you happier, and they would do them.”

Even more extraordinary was that the Hatches had their farmland distributed. It was the Hatches’ wish that their legacy, a legacy of kindness as much as one of dollars and cents, should enrich the whole community and last for generations to come.

Neighbors helping neighbors -- that was Ish and Arlene Hatch’s story.

What is a lifestyle and how is that different from a life? A lifestyle is about brand names and buying identity or fame. Lifestyle gives a false sense of peace and acceptability that comes from others recognizing what you’ve bought into (as well as bought). If your car, clothes, and home are expensive, you’re sophisticated(世故的) and stylish. If you have the right kind of job or go to the right social gatherings, then you receive the insincere approval of others. This means that your self-esteem(自尊) is always at the mercy of others, with no appreciation of you as an individual.

A life, on the other hand, is very different. A life is what you lead when you know what matters most to you. It is very simple and comes from being connected to what you know is important and being willing to put that first, no matter what others may think. When you create a life vs. a lifestyle, your self-esteem comes from what’s inside you, not what others think about you.

Lifestyle is expensive financially and personally, because it costs a great deal to keep up appearances and do what you think is socially acceptable. A life is not expensive. Rather than using personal or financial resources, a life generates energy and staying power. It’s about liberating yourself from the mindless consumption that society expects. It is about making the choices that are in line with your values, instead of using up your bank account or energy for no heart-driven reason.

How can you make the change? Understand the difference between a life and a lifestyle. Analyze your current lifestyle to see what is costing you in money, time, stress, and energy to maintain it. Let go and make room for what is really important to you, what supports you and brings you joy. Remember who you are from within, not what you own!

1.Which of the following examples best explains “what is life about”?

AWe work long hours in a job that we do not enjoy.

BWe focus on what we wear, or what kind of car we drive.

CWe find out what our true beliefs and values are and choose to live by these.

DWe think that how others see us is more important than what we think of ourselves.

2.What method does the author use to explain his opinion in the third paragraph?

AMaking comparison. BGiving an example.

CGiving a definition. DGiving a reason.

3.To make the change, we need to______________________.

Abe directed from within Bbe directed from outside

Cbe driven by social values Dbe driven by others’ opinions

4.What is the author’s purpose of writing this passage?

ATo describe what life is.

BTo introduce what lifestyle is.

CTo promote life instead of lifestyle.

DTo tell the differences between life and lifestyle.
