We experience different forms of the Sun’s energy every day. We can see its light and feel its warmth. The Sun is the major source of energy for our planet. It causes the evaporation (蒸發(fā)) of water from the oceans and lakes. Sunlight also provides the energy used by green plants to make their own food. These green plants then provide food for all organisms(生物) on the Earth.
Much of the energy that comes from the Sun never reaches the Earth’s surface. It is either reflected or absorbed by the gases in the upper atmosphere. Of the energy that reaches the lower atmosphere,30% is reflected by clouds or the Earth’s surface. The remaining 70% warms the surface of the planet, causes water to evaporate, and provides energy for the water cycle and weather. Only a tiny part, approximately 0.023%, is actually used by green plants to produce food.
Many gases found in the atmosphere actually reflect heat energy escaping from the Earth’s surface back to the Earth. These gases act like the glass of a greenhouse in that they allow energy from the Sun to enter but prevent energy from leaving. They are therefore called greenhouse gases.
When sunlight strikes an object, some of the energy is absorbed and some is reflected. The amount reflected depends on the surface. For example, you’ve probably noticed how bright snow is when sunlight falls on it. Snow reflects most of the energy from the Sun, so it contributes to the low temperatures of winter. Dark-coloured surfaces, such as dark soil or forest, absorb more energy and help warm the surrounding air.
小題1:According to the passage, the root( 根本的) cause for weather changes on the Earth is         .
A.the atmosphere surrounding the Earth
B.water from oceans and lakes
C.energy from the Sun
D.greenhouse gases in the sky
小題2:Only a small part of the Sun’s energy reaches the Earth’s surface because most of it is         .
A.a(chǎn)bsorbed by the clouds in the lower atmosphere
B.reflected by the gases in the upper atmosphere
C.lost in the upper and lower atmosphere
D.used to evaporate water from the oceans and lakes
小題3:We learn from the passage that         .
A.a(chǎn)ll living things on the Earth depend on the Sun for their food
B.a(chǎn) forest looks dark in winter because it absorbs solar energy
C.only 0.023% of the energy from the Sun is made use of on the Earth
D.greenhouse gases allow heat energy to escape from the Earth’s surface

Researchers at San Diego Zoo have been studying what has been described as the “secret language” of elephants. They have been monitoring(監(jiān)測) communications between animals that cannot be heard by human ears.
The elephant’s call will be familiar to most people, but the animals also give out growls (低吼). Their growls, however, are only partly audible (聽得見的); two-thirds of the call is at frequencies that are too low to be picked up by our hearing. To learn more about the inaudible part of the growl, the team attached (附在……上面) a microphone sensitive to these low frequencies and a GPS tracking system to eight of the zoo’s female elephants. The researchers could then relate the noises the animals were making to what they were doing. Matt Anderson, who led the project, told BBC News, “We’re excited to learn how they interact and contact with one another.”
The team has already learned that pregnant females use this low frequency communication to announce to the rest of their long gestation (妊娠期) of over two years, in the last 12 days we see the low part of the growl, which we can’t hear. This we believe is to announce to the rest of the herd that the baby is upcoming,” said Dr Anderson.
The researchers believe that this also warns the elephants to look out for coming danger. “You may think that a baby calf of about 300 pounds would not be as open to predation (捕食) as other species,” he says. “But packs of hyenas (袋狼) are a big threat in the wild.”
Female elephants are only in season for around four days every four years and these calls can be heard by males more than two miles away.
小題1:Why some elephants’ call is called “secret language”?
A.Because it can’t be heard by human ears.
B.Because it can only be heard by female elephants.
C.Because people don’t know its meanings.
D.Because people haven’t studied it completely.
小題2:By using a sensitive microphone and a GPS tracking system, the researchers wanted to find out             .
A.where the elephants usually go
B.what the elephants’ growls really mean
C.how mother elephants raise baby calves
D.how elephants protect their babies.
小題3:A pregnant elephant uses inaudible growls to           .
A.show the location where she is staying
B.a(chǎn)sk for help when she losses her way
C.scare away the enemy
D.let others know she will have a baby
小題4:What is the passage mainly about?
A.The elephants can speak like people.
B.The wild elephants’ ways to fight against enemies.
C.The “secret language” between elephants.
D.The special life of female elephants.

Are you a team person? Are you at your best as part of a small, tightly united group of dedicated workers? If so, the future may hold more for you than you think.
High technology, some predicted, would make team work a thing of the past. That’s happening in those areas of business and data processing where one person and a computer can replace a team of workers.
But, elsewhere, teamwork is very much alive. High technology has led to a new type of teamwork in a number of fields, including advertising, scientific research, engineering design, architecture and ocean exploration. Through computer networking, scientists, engineers and technicians at different locations---often thousands of miles apart---can work on the same project at once. They can exchange ideas, try out different designs and test their results.
Examples? An engineering team can now design and try out a robot system, a new manufacturing process, or an entire factory before it is built. An architectural team can do the same with a building or a bridge. A medical team can simulate (模擬) a dangerous operation before performing it on a patient.
Of course, computer–assisted team effort doesn’t end with investigation and simulation. It now usually continues into actual design, manufacturing and testing. “Computer–aided design (CAD) and computer–aided manufacture (CAM) are breaking down barriers between traditional design and manufacturing functions,” explains Dr. Prakash Rao, an engineering manager at General Electric. “Interdisciplinary teams and engineers follow a product from concept to production. Everything is interconnected like a network.”
Sometimes a computer–aided effort can extend beyond production. A team that produces robots may use them to explore space and ocean depth. For high–technology team work, the future seems limitless.

The rising sea waters caused by global warming have inspired a Russian architect to design a hotel that could be built on water as well as land. The eco-friendly “Ark” could be constructed in just a few months anywhere in the world, the designer says.
It’s called “The Ark”,but looks more like a ship sitting upside down on the water.A new design by Russian architect A1exander Remizov challenges the tradition of land-based hotel and would provide a shelter in the future—should the world face a modern-day flood as described in the Bible
The building of the hotel could be fast and simple.“Prefabricated(預(yù)制裝配的)section could be put together in three to four months,” Remizov said. The versatile(萬能的)structure could be constructed in most corners of the earth, even in earthquake-prone areas.Constructing “The Ark"—which would include 14 000 square meters of living space???would cost roughly the same as building an energy-efficient house. The self-supporting structure would be built around a central post, connecting wind generators and heat pumps on its roof with the basement, where solar, wind, and thermal(熱量的)energy could be stored and turned into electricity. Remizov has designed the building without glass, choosing instead the lasting and self-cleaning foil(箔)that could defend itself against rough weather conditions. That foil would be fastened to metals, which would also collect rainwater. The building would also feature an indoor jungle, creating its microclimate.
小題1:What’s the purpose of designing “The Ark,?”
A.To prevent flood happening.B.To draw the public’s attention
C.To secure people from flood.D.To attract more tourists.
小題2:Which of the following might be the shortest time to make the parts of "The Ark”?
A.14 months.B.3 months.C.4 months.D.7 months.
小題3:What is the main difference between the hotel designed by Ale Remizov and other hotels?

Many years ago in a small village, an old man was hired to clear the spring (泉水) up on the mountain. He patrolled (巡邏) the spring every day, and swept away all the leaves and other things that would dirty the fresh flow of water. Soon, beautiful swans (天鵝) came to the clear spring, and the village became a popular attraction for visitors.
Years passed. One evening the town leaders held a meeting. As they looked at the salary list, one of them said, “Why do we keep this old man on year after year? I don’t think we need him or his work.” Later, the old man was asked to leave.

“The price of books for our students is just getting higher and higher and, combined with the rising cost of tuition,it’s killing these students,”said Peter Jason,a college professor.“Remember, students are one of the poorest groups of people in America.Almost half of them have at least one part-time job.In fact, one of my students has three jobs. And she still manages to have high scores and go to school full-time.”
Textbook prices are traditionally high.Adding to that problem, many college teachers change textbooks year after year;they either upgrade to a new edition or switch to an entirely different textbook. This further hurts students because if an instructor no longer uses a particular textbook, that book has no resale value.
Dr.Jason decided to make lire a little easier and a lot cheaper for his students by writing his own book on public speaking.“Many books have an increased price because of CD-ROMs,lots of color photographs and pictures.I talked to my students, and many of them, like me,prefer to keep things simple! So,a few years ago,I wrote my own textbook.Compared to most other public speaking books, mine is half the number of pages, and one-third the price. That is,$30 instead of $90.When I wrote a second edition last year, students only had to buy the 35 new pages, For only $7.00,they had almost a new book. Now my loose-leaf textbook enjoys great popularity among the students.Maybe in the future more writers and publishers will try it.”
小題1:What did Dr. Jason say about students at college?
A.They are short of money.B.They need better textbooks
C.They should do part-time jobs.D.They are trying to get high scores.
小題2:What did Dr.Jason decide to do to help the students?
A.To choose cheaper textbooks.B.To write a textbook himself.
C.To speak to his students. D.To use old textbooks.
小題3:How much does a public speaking textbook usually cost?
A.About 7 dollars.B.About 30 dollars.
C.About 37 dollars.D.About 90 dollars.
小題4:Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A.Dr Jason's textbook has CD-ROMs and nice pictures.
B.More writers and publishers will write simpler textbooks.
C.Dr.Jason teaches public speaking at a college.
D.Dr-Jason’s textbook is not well received.
