Do you raise salmon (鮭魚(yú)) in your classroom at school? Do you ever have class while floating down a
river in a canoe? Do you ever throw your school lunch leftovers into a compost (混合肥料) bin when you
are finished? They are all part of a regular school day at Barnard Environmental Studies Magnet School in
New Haven, Connecticut. Known as a "green" school, Barnard attracts students from all over the region who
are interested in environmental studies.
"We do Earth Day all the year round," said Marjorie Drucker, Barnard's Magnet Resource teacher. With
the school's special classes, its 325 students study the environment all day long. "Being green means that
everything in the building is designed with the environment in mind," Drucker told Scholastic News. For
example, the lights go off when people leave the room, and special windows provide "passive light", cutting
down on the need for electric lighting. When a window is open, the air-conditioning automatically turns off.
Conserving energy is not all that students do to help the environment. While learning about the dying
salmon population in the Connecticut rivers, students also do something to help out-they raise more salmon.
In the classrooms there are fish tanks containing salmon eggs. The eggs are kept in water at two degrees
Celsius. After the eggs hatch, students observe the baby salmon through all the stages of development, and
then release the adult salmon into Connecticut rivers.
Composting is another part of taking care of the environment at Barnard Students deal with their lunches
by throwing the remaining food into a compost bin in a greenhouse. The compost is used to help grow plants.
     At Barnard, almost everything has to do with the environment. Students sing songs about the environment;
their artworks have something to do with the environment; even their math classes are focused on protecting
the environment.
Barnard offers chances that students can't get in a regular school. The school's goal is to teach children to
be good environmental role models. They also learn to live in a different way. To attend the school, students
have to apply and express their interest in protecting the environment. "Students come here because they care
about the environment," said Drucker.

America is a country on the move. In unheard-of numbers, people of all ages are exercising their way to
better health. According to the latest figures, 59 percent of American adults exercise regularly-up 12 percent
from just two years ago and more than double the figure of 25 years ago. Even non-exercisers believe they
would be more attractive and confident if they were more active.
It is hard not to get the message. The virtues of physical fitness are shown on magazine covers, postage
stamps, and television ads of everything from beauty soaps to travel books. Exercise as a part of daily life did
not catch on until the late 1960s when research by military doctors began to show the health benefits of' doing
regular physical exercises. Growing publicity (宣傳) for races held in American cities helped fuel a strong
interest in the ancient sport of running. Although running has leveled off in recent years as Americans have
discovered equally rewarding-and sometimes safer- forms of exercise, such as walking and swimming, running
remains the most popular form of exercise.
As the popularity of exercise continues to mount, so does scientific evidence of its health benefits. The key
to fitness is exercising the major muscle groups vigorously (強(qiáng)有力地) enough to approximately double the
heart rate and keep it doubled for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. Doing such physical exercises three times or more
a week will produce considerable improvements in physical health in about three months.
1. It can be learnt from the passage that the health benefits of exercise ____.
A. are to be further studied
B. are self-evident
C. are yet to be proved
D. are supported by scientific evidence
2. A growing interest in sports developed after ____.
A. an increasing number of races were held in American cities
B. research showed their health benefits
C. scientific evidence of health benefits was shown on TV ads
D. people got the message from magazine covers and postage stamps
3. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Exercise-The Road to Health
B. Scientific Evidence of Health Benefits
C. Different Forms of Exercise
D. Running-A Popular Form of Sport
4. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the phrase "leveled off" in the paragraph 2?
A. Reached its lowest level in popularity.
B. Stopped being popular.
C. Stopped increasing in popularity.
D. Become very popular.

People are overweight for many reasons, the most important one of which is that they eat the wrong
foods, get the wrong types of calories per meal, and they also eat meals at the wrong time each day.
Food is more powerful than any weight loss pill, because the food that you eat can either make you thin
or fat. This is true because your body is like an engine, and it only needs certain foods at certain intervals(間隔)each day.
     Low-calorie Diets Do Not Work
The reason people cannot lose weight by starving themselves is that their metabolism(新陳代謝)will
detect any major drop in calories and it will then adjust(調(diào)整)itself by burning fewer calories each day.
That is the reason why you can eat 1,000 calories per day and not lose any weight, while your friends
can eat 2,500 calories per day and not gain any weight.
     Low-fat Diets Do Not Work
Many people in today's society are buying mostly low- fat or non-fat food at the grocery store.
Everybody knows how much fat is inside the food they buy. However, people are getting fatter than ever
before by doing this. They are not losing weight by changing to this low-fat lifestyle.
Losing weight has nothing to do with these things. One of the most important things you can do to
control your weight is to eat the proper foods, such as fruit and vegetables, eat them at the right time, and
exercise every day. If people make this a habit, they will lose weight.
1. What is the main reason why people are overweight according to the author?
A. They eat the wrong foods at the wrong time.
B. They eat food with lots of calories.
C. They don't take any weight loss pills.
D. They burn many calories every day.
2. The article is written in order to _______.
A. tell readers not to buy low-fat or non-fat food
B. tell readers how to lose weight
C. tell readers about an important scientific discovery
D. call on people to lose weight and stay healthy
3. To realize the aim of your weight loss plan, you should ________.
a. do exercise every day       b. eat meals at the right time
c. eat fruits and vegetables     d. eat low-fat or sweet food
e. eat the proper foods at each meal
A. a, b, c, d

You're in a bit of a dilemma standing in front of the produce section of your local supermarket.
In one hand, you're holding a conventionally grown Granny Smith apple. In your other hand, you
have one that's been organically grown. Both apples are firm, shiny and green. Both provide vitamins
and fiber, and both are free of fat, sodium and cholesterol.
The conventionally grown apple costs less and is a proven family favorite. But the organic apple
has a label that says "USDA Organic". Does that mean it's better? Safer? More nutritious? Become
a better informed consumer for your next trip to the supermarket.  Several differences between
organic and non-organic foods exist. The word "organic" refers to the way farmers grow and process
agricultural products, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products and meat. Organic farming
practices are designed to encourage soil and water conservation and reduce pollution. Farmers who
grow organic produce and meat don't use conventional methods to fertilize, control weeds or prevent
livestock disease.
Here are other differences between conventional farming and organic farming:

* Organic or not? Check the label
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has established an organic certification program
that requires all organic foods to meet strict government standards. These standards regulate how
such foods are grown, handled and processed. Any farmer or food manufacturer who labels and
sells a product as organic must be USDA certified as meeting these standards. Only producers who
sell less than $5,000 a year in organic foods are exempt(免除) from this certification.
If a food bears a USDA Organic label, it means it's produced and processed according to the
USDA standards. The seal is voluntary, but many organic producers use it.

1. The main purpose of the passage is ________________.
A. to promote the sales of organic food
B. to inform people organic food is better for their health
C. to compare conventional and organic foods
D. to persuade people to become informed consumers
2. According to the passage, organic farming is intended to ________________.
A. improve the quality of the soil and water
B. take the place of the traditional agriculture entirely
C. prevent livestock from getting disease more effectively
D. adopt environmentally-friendly methods to grow plants and feed animals.
3. According to the passage, the conventionally grown apple ________________.
A. costs less but tastes worse than an organic one
B. doesn't look the same as an organic one
C. contains more fat, sodium and cholesterol
D. has proven itself acceptable by the family

4. Which of the following methods belongs to organic farming?

A. Using chemicals to kill insects and prevent disease.
B. Using rotted plants as fertilizer to promote plant growth.
C. Using growth hormones to speed up animals' growth.
D. Using pests to reduce insects and disease.
5. From the passage we know the organic certification program ________________.
A. is not meant for all producers of produce
B. makes it a must to attach a USDA Organic label
C. sets restrictions on the sales of organic produce
D. requires all foods to satisfy the strict government standards

Anger is good for you, as long as you control it, according to new psychology research. A
new study from Carnegie Mellon University shows anger may help people reduce the negative
impacts of stress and help you become healthier.
"Here getting emotional is not bad for you if you look at the case of anger," said Jennifer
Lerner of Carnegie Mellon. "The more people display anger, the lower their stress responses."
Lerner studied 92 UCLA students by asking them to count back from 6,200. They must say outloud
every thirteenth number. Researchers disturbed them by asking them to count faster or ask
them other questions. If they made any mistakes, they had to restart from the very beginning.
Many students felt depressed about making so many mistakes or got angry.
Lerner used a hidden video camera and recorded all their facial expressions during the test.
The researchers describe their reactions as fear, anger and disgust.
Other researchers recorded the students' blood pressure, pulse and production of a high-stress
hormone (荷爾蒙) called cortisol. People whose faces showed more fear during the experiment had
higher blood pressure and higher levels of the hormone. Both can have lasting effects such as
diabetes (糖尿病), heart disease, depression and extra weight gain.
When people feel fear, negative impacts increase, but when they get angry, those negatives
go down, according to the study.
"Having that sense of anger leads people to actually feel some power in what otherwise is
maddening (令人發(fā)狂的) situation," Lerner said.
Lerner previously studied Americans' emotional response to the 911 terrorist attacks two
months after the incident. She found people who reacted with anger were more optimistic. These
people are healthier compared with those who were frightened during the event. So in maddening
situations, anger is not a bad thing to have. It's a healthier response than fear.
1. What is the story mainly about?
A. The findings of new psychology research.
B. What you can do with anger in certain cases.
C. Different effects produced by anger and fear.
D. Healthier responses in maddening situations.
2. Which statement will Jennifer Lerner agree with?
A. It's better to be angry than to be frightened.
B. Different reactions reflect different outlooks on life.
C. Don't control your anger and it makes you powerful.
D. Pessimistic people are generally healthier.
3. What does the underlined word "both" refer to according to the passage?
A. Fear and anger.
B. Blood pressure and pulse.
C. Blood pressure and cortisol.
D. Higher blood pressure and higher levels of the hormone.
4. In what way can anger be beneficial to people?

A. By showing their optimistic side.
B. By reducing their stress.
C. By reducing high blood pressure.
D. By taking the place of fear.

5. The researchers irritated (激怒) the students by ______.
A. recording their performance secretly
B. asking them to count to 6,200 again and again
C. disturbing them and making them start all over again
D. criticizing them when they made mistakes

Disposing (處理) of waste has been a problem since humans started producing it. As more and more
people choose to live close together in cities, the waste-disposal problem becomes increasingly difficult.
During the eighteenth century, it was usual for several neighboring towns to get together to select a
faraway spot as a dump site. Residents or trash haulers (垃圾托運(yùn)者) would transport household
rubbish, rotted wood, and old possessions to the site. Periodically (定期的) some of the trash was
burned and the rest was buried. The unpleasant sights and smells caused no problem because nobody
lived close by.
Factories, mills, and other industrial sites also had waste to be disposed of. Those located on rivers
often just dumped the unwanted remains into the water. Others built huge burners with chimneys to deal
with the problem.
Several facts make these choices unacceptable to modern society. The first problem is space. Dumps, which are now called landfills, are most needed in heavily populated areas. Such areas rarely have empty
land suitable for this purpose. Property is either too expensive or too close to residential neighborhoods.
Long-distance trash hauling(垃圾托運(yùn)) has been a common practice, but once farm areas are refusing to
accept rubbish from elsewhere. Cheap land within trucking distance of major city area is almost
nonexistent.
Awareness of pollution dangers has resulted in more strict rules of waste disposal. Pollution of rivers,
ground water, land and air is a price people can no longer pay to get rid of waste. The amount of waste,
however, continues to grow.
Recycling efforts have become commonplace, and many towns require their people to take part.
Even the most efficient recycling programs, however, can hope to deal with only about 50 percent of a
city's reusable waste.
1. The most suitable title for this passage would be ______.
A. places for Disposing Waste
B. Waste Pollution Dangers
C. Ways of Getting Rid of Waste
D. Waste Disposal Problem
2. During the 18 th century, people disposed their waste in many ways EXCEPT for _____.
A. burying it
B. recycling it
C. burning it
D. throwing it into rivers
3. What can be inferred from the fourth paragraph?
A. Farm areas accept waste from the city in modern society.
B. There is a cheap land to bury waste in modern society.
C. It is difficult to find space to bury waste in modern society
D. Ways to deal with waste in modern society stay the same.
4. The main purpose of writing this article is to _____.
A. draw people's attention to waste management
B. warn people of the pollution dangers we are facing
C. call on people to take part in recycling programs
D. tell people a better way to get rid of the waste

Plants are flowering faster than scientists predicted (預(yù)測(cè)) in reaction to climate change, which could
have long damaging effects on food chains and ecosystems.
Global warming is having a great effect on hundreds of plant and animal species around the world,
changing some living patterns, scientists say.
Increased carbon dioxide(CO2)in the air from burning coal and oil can have an effect on how plants
produce oxygen, while higher temperatures and changeable rainfall patterns can change their patterns of
growth.
"Predicting species' reaction to climate change is a major challenge in ecology," said the researches of
several U.S. universities. They said plants had been the key object of study because their reaction to
climate change could have an effect on food chains and ecosystem services.
The study, published on the Nature website, uses the findings from plant life cycle studies and experiments across four continents and 1,634 species. It found that some experiments had underestimated (低估)
the speed of flowering by 8.5 times and leafing by 4 times.
"Across all species, the experiments under-predicted the speed of the advance - for both leafing and
flowering - that results from temperature increases," the study said.
The design of future experiments may need to be improved to better predict how plants will react to
climate change, it said.
Plants are necessary for life on the Earth. They are the base of the food chain, using photosynthesis
(光合作用) to produce sugar from carbon dioxide and water. They let out oxygen which is needed by
nearly every organism on the planet.
Scientists believe the world's average temperature has risen by about 0.8? since 1900, and nearly 0.2?
every ten years since 1979.
So far, efforts to cut emissions(排放)of planet-warming greenhouse gases are not seen as enough to
prevent the Earth heating up beyond 2? this century - a point scientists say will bring the danger of a
changeable climate in which weather extremes are common, leading to drought, floods, crop failures and
rising sea levels.
1. What is the key information the author wants to give in Paragraph 1?
A. Plants' reaction to weather could have damaging effects on ecosystem.
B. The increasing speed of flowering is beyond scientists' expectation.
C. Climate change leads to the change of food production patterns.
D. Food chains have been seriously damaged because of weather.
2. We can learn from the study published on the Nature website that ______.
A. plants' flowering is 8.5 times faster than leafing
B. there are 1,634 plant species on the four continents
C. scientists should improve the design of the experiments
D. the experiments failed to predict how plants react to climate change
3. Scientists pay special attention to the study of plants because _______.
A. they can prove the climate change clearly
B. they are very important in the food chains
C. they play a leading role in reducing global warming
D. they are growing and flowering much faster than before
4. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs about the world's temperature?
A. It has risen nearly 0.2? since 1979.
B. Its change will lead to weather extremes.
C. It is 0.8? higher in 1979 than that of 1990.
D. It needs to be controlled within 2? in this century.

     1. _____: less red meat and more fibre, less saturated fat (飽和脂肪) and more fruit and veg, right?
Wrong, according to a controversial new book by nutritionist Zoe Harcombe. In the book, Harcombe
charts her careful journey of research into studies that underpin (鞏固) dietary advice-and her myth (誤

     Myth: 2._____.
"Real fat is not bad for us," says Harcombe. It' s man-made fats we should be demonising. Why do
we have this idea that meat is full of saturated fat? In a 100g pork chop, there is 2.3g of unsaturated fat
and l.5 g of saturated fat.
Myth: We should eat more fibre.
For three decades, we have eaten fibre into our bodies to help us feel full and keep our digestive systems
moving. 3._____, says Harcombe.
The advice to eat more fibre is put forward along with the theory that we need to clean our digestive
systems. But essential minerals are absorbed from food while it is in the intestines (腸道), so why do we
want to wash everything out? Concentrate on not putting bad food in.
Myth: You need to eat five portions of fruit and veg a day.
"Five-a-day is the most well-known piece of nutritional advice," says Harcombe. "You' d think it was
based on firm evidence of health benefit. 4._____."
Five-a-day started as a marketing campaign by 25 fruit and veg companies and the American National
Cancer Institute in 1991. There was no evidence for any cancer benefit.
Myth: Fruit and veg are the most nutritious things to eat.
Apparently not. Harcombe allows that vegetables are a great addition to the diet-if served in butter to
deliver the fat-soluble (dissolved) vitamins they contain-but natural sugar, the fruit sugar in fruit, goes
straight to the liver and is stored as fat.
5._____, says Harcombe, who adds:"Vitamins and minerals in animal foods-meat, fish, eggs and dairy
products-beat those in fruit."
A. Want to lose weight? Don't trust these
B. We think we know what to eat
C. This is not a good idea
