Dear Peter,
It was great fun seeing you at the dance. I wonder whether I would ever run into you at school or not. School is going well. I am so busy that I can hardly have time to go and play on the weekend. I always go to BYU^ library to learn English or read newspapers.
Perhaps you can visit me sometime. My house is close to BYU,also near Provo City Power. You can go straight from ELC. and when you see the 700N,just turn left. My apartment's name is Allred. It's easy to find it. I like my warm house though it is small; it's a sweet home after all. Also if you want to visit me,we can cook Chinese food. You must miss Taiwan's food, yes? We may watch movies or play basketball together. I haven’t played basketball for a long time. I'm usually at home after 7 p. m.,but I have to go to bed at about 10: 30 p. m. because I must get up at 6 : 30 a. m. every day. I thought that your Chinese was pretty good. Oh,I'm going skiing. That's all. Have a good time!
Yours,
Linda

Differences in bicycling between China and other countries
People all over the world ride bicycles. But there are many differences between China and other countries.
Wearing helmets (頭盔)
You may think helmets are useless. But you are wrong. In many places kids have to wear them when they ride bikes. In some places of the United States,it's against the law (違反法律) for kids under 16 to ride without helmets. Many people say that helmets are like seat belts (安全帶) for bikes.
Bike lanes (車道)
In China, bicycles have their own special lanes on the road. People can ride next to cars. In the USA. roads are only for cars. People don't ride their bikes to school or work. But this isn’t true everywhere in the West. In the Netherlands (荷蘭) there are more bikes than people. The whole country has bicycle lanes.
Riding for fun
Do you ride your bike to school? In China this is very common. But in the USA. kids only ride their bikes for fun on the weekend. They regard bicycling as a sport. Many cities have special parks. People turn old railways (鐵路) into bike roads. People can ride from town to town.(陜西省西安市慶安中學(xué) 2011 —2012 學(xué)年 八年級下學(xué)期期中考試英語試題)

Canyoning (蹦谷運動)
The sports of canyoning explore the high-energy environment where water meets rock on the coast, or in river canyons. Protected by wetsuits and helmets (頭盔), people jump from cliffs (懸崖) and waterfalls and explore caves and river canyons that would not normally be arrived at.
It was pioneered in the U.K. by TYF Adventure (01437 721611, www.tyf.com) and several thousand people leap from the cliffs near St David’s each year. A half day canyoning trip costs £50 (£30 for children under 16).
Scuba diving
Diving is not popular with British people. The challenges of wild waters are greater because the water is colder and not clear enough, but the coasts of Cornwall, Wales and Scotland have some of the best wreck diving in the world.
The British Sub Aqua Club (0870 112 9133 www.bsac.com) and the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (01580 819688 www.padi.com) run courses teaching the important skills right up and to instructor level.
Surfing
The best surfing places in the UK are on the southwest coast where it is warmer and the surf is relatively steady, particularly in Cornwall. The best time of year to surf in the UK is late summer and autumn when water temperatures are at their mildest.
The British Surfing Association (01479 861256 www.britsurf.co.uk) has a list of famous surf schools around the country.
Rock climbing
The most popular natural rocks in Britain include the Peak District, the Lake District, coastal regions, while vast areas of Scotland are a climber’s paradise (天堂). Climbing courses and climbing walls can be located on the website of the British Mountaineering Council (0870 010 4878, www.thebmc.co.uk) which offers a series of short films that take the new climber through a step-by-step guide to visiting a climbing wall for the first time.

Nuclear power's(核能的) danger to health, safety, and even life itself can be described in one word; radiation(輻射). Nuclear radiation has a certain mystery about it, partly because it cannot be detected (探測) by human senses. It can't be seen or heard, or touched or tasted, even though it may be all around us. There are other things like that. For example, radio waves are all around us but we can't detect them, sense them, without a radio receiver. Similarly, we can't sense radioactivity without a radiation detector. But unlike common radio waves, nuclear radiation is not harmless to human beings and other living things. At very high levels, radiation can kill an animal or human being completely by killing masses of cells (細(xì)胞) in important organs (器官). But even the lowest levels can do serious damage. There is no level of radiation that is completely safe. If the radiation does not hit anything important, the damage may not be significant. This is the case when only a few cells are hit, and if they are killed completely. Your body will replace the dead cells with healthy ones. But if the few cells are only damaged, and if they reproduce themselves, you may be in trouble. They reproduce themselves in an unusual way. They can grow into cancer. Sometimes this does not show up for many years.
This is another reason for some of the mystery about nuclear radiation. Serious damage can be done without the knowledge of the person at the time that damage has occurred. A person can be irradiated(放射治療) and feel fine, then die of cancer five, ten, or twenty years later as a result. Or a child can be born weak or easy to get serious illness as a result of radiation absorbed by its grandparents. Radiation can hurt us. We must know the truth.
1.According to the passage, the danger of nuclear power lies in __________.
A. nuclear mystery B. radiation detection
C. radiation level D. nuclear radiation
2.Radiation can lead to serious results even at the lowest level ________.
A. when it kills few cells
B. though the damaged cells can repair themselves
C. if it damages few cells
D. unless the damaged cells can reproduce themselves
3.Radiation can hurt us in the way that it can _____.
A. kill large numbers of cells in main organs so as to cause death immediately
B. damage cells which may grow into cancer years later
C. affect the healthy growth of our younger generation
D. lead to all of the above results
4.Which of the following can be best inferred from the passage?
A. The importance of protection from radiation cannot be overemphasized (過分強(qiáng)調(diào)).
B. The mystery about radiation remains unsolved.
C. Cancer is mainly caused by radiation.
D. Radiation can hurt those who do not know about its danger.
