Have you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happyAfter all,you probably sing or whistle when you are happy

Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happyHowever, they sing most of the time for a very different reasonTheir singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory

Do you know what aterritoryis? A territory is an area that an animalusually the male, claims(聲稱)as its ownOnly he and his family are welcome thereNo other families of the same species(物種)are welcomeYour yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcomeIf a stranger should enter your territory and threaten youyou might shoutProbably this would be enough to frighten him away

If so,you have actually scared the stranger away without having to fight himA bird does the same thingBut he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting(筑巢) seasonSo he is screaming all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not . This screaming is what we call a birds song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away

Birds sing loudest in the spring when they are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs

You can see that birds have a language all their ownMost of it has something to do with attracting mates and setting up territories

There are many differences between America and China. The biggest difference is traffic rules. In America there are too much more cars than in China. But there are much fewer traffic jams and accidents in America than in China. We hardly see traffic police in the street, but all cars obey strictly traffic rules, and people hardly find that a car does not obey traffic rules in the street.

About American traffic rules, there are many better terms, such as:

1. Stop line: There are stop lines in all crossing without traffic light (some have two stop lines and others have four stop lines). All cars must stop while meeting the stop line.

2. Traffic light: There is traffic light in the crossing of the road. Cars may almost turn every direction. The traffic light can give signal step by step including u-turn. There is a kind of middle lane of turning left. When a car wants to turn left in the road, he may enter into the middle lane of turning left and give a signal of turning left. When he thinks being safe, he may turn left. In many conditions the order of passing is also given very specifically. If people want to change lane or turn, they must look behind and think being safe. Only so, they may do it.

3. Specific item: Such as parking, there are three kinds of lines (their colors are white, blue or red) in the roadside. Every line may park different kinds of cars. There are many streets in some residential areas (住宅區(qū)), and there is a kind of rule that any car cannot park at any time or any period time. In every parking, there are some special positions for invalid (傷殘的) people.

4. About the priority of passenger and car: At any case, passengers have the priority to cars. And only after passengers have passed the road and got the top of sidestep, cars may go ahead.

In general, traffic rules of America are very specific, convenient, safe and humanizing.

1.Which of the following is NOT the reason why we can hardly see traffic police in the street in America?

A. Traffic police are not very necessary because few cars break traffic rules.

B. The traffic is very clear and there are few traffic jams and accidents in the street.

C. There are so many cars in the street that the traffic police can’t be seen.

D. The effective traffic rules play an important part in the road safety.

2.Why is there a middle lane of turning left on the road?

A. It is designed for the cars that want to turn left.

B. It is very safe to drive there.

C. It is very convenient for the traffic police to find the cars that break the rules.

D. The cars that want to turn left can easily give a signal of turning left.

3.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. In America, all cars in the crossing must stop when they meet the stop line.

B. In America, any car cannot park in the streets in some residential areas.

C. If people want to turn, they can obey the guide of the traffic police.

D. There are more traffic jams in China.

4.What’s the best title for the passage?

A. American Traffic Rules

B. Differences in Traffic Rules between China and America

C. Traffic Jams in America

D. American People Who Obey Traffic Rules

Like many languages spoken by people, Ayapaneco is dying. Only two people in the world still speak it, and they won't talk to each other.

Spoken in Mexico for centuries, Ayapaneco is one of 68 surviving languages in the mainly Spanish-speaking nation. The two speakers are Manuel Segovia and Isidro Velazquez. Though they live only 500 meters from each other in the village, the two men seldom talk to each other. Daniel, an American expert, who is working to make a dictionary of Ayapaneco, says the two men “don’t have a lot in common,” and that Segovia can be “active” while Velasquez tends to mind his own business and stay at home.

While Segovia still speaks to his wife and son in Ayapaneco, neither of them can manage more than a few words. Velasquez hardly speaks his native tongue any more. Daniel is working to preserve the language in dictionary form before its last surviving speakers pass away. According to Daniel, Ayapaneco and the other languages began dying out with the introduction of public Spanish education in the mid-20th century. For decades, local children weren’t allowed to speak anything else. Many people to cities, starting in the 1970s, also helped the dying out of native languages.

Ayapaneco is the name given to the language; Segovia and Velazquez call it “Nuumte Oote”, which means “true voice”. Neither man, however, speaks the same language. The dictionary will contain two versions(版本) of the language when it comes out later this year. Those behind the dictionary aren’t the only ones trying to save Ayapaneco. The National Language Institute plans to hold classes so that Segovia and Velasquez can pass on what they know to children.

It is thought that there are about 6,000 languages spoken on earth and that about half will disappear over the next 100 years. Let’s hope the “true voice” isn’t one of them.

1.Which are the main reasons why the language Ayapaneco started dying out?

a. No teacher liked to teach it.

b. Local children had to speak Spanish.

c. many villagers went to live in cities.

d. The surviving speakers didn’t like to use it.

Aa, b Ba, c Cb, d Db, c

2.How does the National Language Institute try to save Ayapaneco?

AWrite a dictionary of Ayapaneco.

BLet Ayapaneco be taught at school.

CIntroduce a public Ayapaneco education.

DAsk villagers to speak Ayapaneco.

3.From the text we learn that the author____________________.

Aagrees that it is natural that Ayapaneco should die out

Bthinks Daniel’s effort to preserve Ayapaneco won’t work

Cthinks highly of Ayapaneco and wants people to learn it

Dhopes that Ayapaneco will not die out in the future

Fahad Azad, an engineer in India, invented a robot named DuctBotThe toy-car sized DuctBot measured 23 centimeters in length, 19 centimeters in width and 9 centimeters in height and weighs just two kilograms

The robot is designed to snake through dark, narrow air conditioning ducts (管道) and clean themA pair of LEDs fitted on the robot light up the dirty scenery, so it can be captured (抓拍) by a camera

In order to control it more easily, Mr. Azad chooses to fix DuctBot on wheelsThe robot can clean off lots of dirt, as well as dead pigeons and insectsKeeping indoor air in good quality and monitoring carbon-dioxide levels in buildings with central air conditioning is a challengeIt is important in some places where clean air can mean a difference between life and death, such as hospitalsDirty air has a bad influence on people's health

EPSCO, a Dubai-based company which specializes in improving indoor air quality, read about Mr. Azad's invention in a national newspaper after he had won an international robotics competitionEPSCO had cleaning equipment, but it needed someone to get into those ducts to do the dirty, dangerous workAcross India, for example, the task still falls to childrenThey are small enough to go through those ducts

In 2005, Mr. Azad who was still at university decided to do something about itSix years later his own company, Robosoft Systems, has Bluestar, EPSCO and the Indian Navy, some leading air condition makers, as partners

Mr. Azad and his ten employees are currently exploring robot designs to examine oil tanks or sewage (污水)pipesTheir biggest challenge is to make the robots user-friendly enoughMr. Azad hopes that the robot could eventually be operated not by engineers but by workersThere will be lots of difficulties they need to overcome in the future
