LONDON ( Reuters)— Eco tourism ( 生態(tài)旅游) is causing A.lot of damage to wildlife and may be endangering the survival(生存) of the very animals people are flocking to see, according to researchers.

Biologists and conservationists ( 自然環(huán)境保護(hù)論者) are worried because polar bears, dolphins, penguins and other creatures are getting stressed and losing weight and some are dying.

"Evidence is growing that many animals do not react well to tourists in their backyard,” New Scientist magazine said.

The immediate effects researchers have noticed are changes in behavior, heart rates, or stress hormone levels but they fear it could get much worse and over the long term "could endanger the survival of the very wildlife they want to see".

Although money produced through ecotourism, which has been growing at about 10—30 percent A.year, has major benefits for poor countries and people living in rural areas, the Swiss-based World Conservation Union and some governments fear not all projects are audited (審計(jì)) and based on environmentally friendly policies, according to the magazine,

"The transmission(傳播) of disease to wildlife, or small changes to wildlife health through disturbance of daily life or increased stress levels, while not obvious to the casual observer, may translate to lower survival and breeding ,"said Philip Seddon, of the University of Ota go in Dunedin, New Zealand.

Scientists have noticed that bottleneck dolphins along the northeastern coast of New Zealand become nervously excited when tourist boats arrive. Similar changes in behavior have been observed in polar bears and yellow-eyed penguins in areas visited by eco tourists are producing smaller babies.

Conservationists are now calling for more research into the effect of eco tourism on animals and say the industry must be developed carefully. They also want studies done before new eco tourism projects are started.

“The animals’ welfare should be very important because without them there will be no eco tourism,” said Rochelle Constantine of the University of Auckland in New Zealand.

The fast English dictionary was published in 1604. The dictionary was actually nothing more than a list of about 3,000 difficult words, each followed by a one - word definition (定義). The author (作者), Robert Cawdrey, made no attempt to include everyday words in his dictionary. No one, he reasoned (推理), would ever have to look up a word in a dictionary if he already knew the meaning of the word. During the 1600’s more dictionaries were published. Each followed Cawdrey’s lead and presented a few thousand hard words. Around 1700 one dictionary maker, John Kersey, did define (下定義) easy words as well as hard words. But until the 1750’s all the dictionaries were rather crude (粗制濫造的) and not very valuable (有價(jià)值的).

A man named Dr. Samuel Johnson changed all this. In 1755 Dr. Johnson produced the first modern dictionary. He included in his dictionary all important words, both easy and hard, and he gave good meanings, He also gave good sentences to show how each word was actually used in speech and in writing. By the end of the 1700’s most dictionary makers had followed Johnson’s example. Dictionaries were getting better and better.

The 1800’s saw the greatest improvement (改善) in the quality of dictionaries. In England scholars (學(xué)者) planned and prepared the Oxford English Dictionary, a twenty volume (卷) work. One of the most interesting features (特點(diǎn)) of the Oxford Dictionary is its word histories. NBC News and news services

  Updated:1∶15.pm.

  ET Jan.9,2006

TALLMANSVILLE, W.Va.-Eleven miners who died in the Sago disaster could have walked out alive had they known that there was healthier air less than 2,000 feet away, the head of the mining company told NBC News in an interview aired on zMonday-exactly a week to the day that the men sat trapped in the mine awaiting rescuers who arrived too late for all but one survivor.

”They were headed into an unknown,” International Coal Group CEO Ben Haield said.“They had no way of knowing how big, how disastrous the explosion was.In hindsight, if they had known that the smoke was only extremely dense in an area of perhaps 1,000 or 1,500 feet, yes they could have moved to fresh air, yes they could have survived, but they had no way of knowing that.”

”It’s over two miles to the outside and they no doubt would have been concerned that they can’t walk through two miles of smoke,” he added.“If they had known that it was only 1,500 or 42,000 feet of smoke certainly they could have come on out and yes they could have been saved.”

Haield called it a tragedy that was”unavoidable and horribly sad” because the miners, even though they had breathing devices, did exactly what they had been taught to do:hunker down(蹲下)and wait for rescuers.

Crews did not know the location of the miners while they awaited rescue and had no way to communicate with them.

The men appeared to have died after about 10 hours and the rescuers only arrived after about 40 hours.Eleven men died awaiting rescue, one died in the blast that caused the disaster and a 13th survived.

When I showed it to my students, it was as if I had shown them scenes from a horror(恐怖)movie.

“But she will get dark,”they said.

“That's what she wants,”I told them.“We think darker skin(膚色)is beautiful.”

They looked at me in disbelief. It was as if I came from the moon.

For years, American girls spend their summer trying to get as tanned(曬黑)as possible. In China, on the other hand, girls use umbrellas all year round.
