Researchers are placing robotic dogs (機(jī)器狗) in the homes of lonely old people to determine whether they can improve the quality of life for humans. Alan Beck,an expert in human-animal relationship, and Nancy Edwards,a professor of nursing, are leading the animal-assisted study concerning the influence of robotic dogs on old people's depression, physical activity, and life satisfaction. "No one will argue that an older person is better off being more active, challenged,or stimulated (剌激) ,"Edwards points out. "The problem is how we promote (使成為現(xiàn)實(shí)) that, especially for those without friends or help. A robotic dog could be a solution."

In the study, the robot, called AIBO,is placed for six weeks in the houses of some old people who live alone. Before placing AIBO in the home, researchers will collect baseline data for six weeks. These old people will keep a diary to note their feelings and activity before and after AIBO. Then, the researchers will review the data to determine if it has inspired any changes in the life of its owner.

"I talk to him all the time, and he responds to my voice," says a seventy-year-old lady. "When Vm watching TV,he'll stay in my arms until he wants down. He has a mind of his own.”

The AIBOs respond to certain orders. The researchers say they have some ad?vantages over live dogs, especially for old people. Often the elderly are disabled and cannot care for an animal by walking it or playing with it. A robotic dog removes exercise and feeding concerns.

"At the beginning,it was believed that no one would relate to the robotic dog,be?cause it was metal and not furry (毛皮的) ."Beck says. "But it's amazing how quick?ly we have given up that belief.”

"Hopefully, down the road, these robotic pets could become a more-valuable health helper. They will record their masters' blood pressure, oxygen levels,or heart rhythms. AIBOs may even one day have games that can help stimulate older people's minds.”

2. C細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第二段中的第三句"These old people will keep a diary to note their feelings and activity before and after AIBO."

Often the elderly are dis?abled and cannot care for an animal by walking it or playing with it. A robotic dog removes exercise and feeding con-cerns."

AIBOs may even one day have games that can help stimulate older people's minds.'"可知,機(jī)器狗在將來(lái)或許會(huì)做那些有助于刺激老人大腦的游戲,即讓老年人活躍起來(lái),故答案為B.

[2016屆保定市高二下學(xué)期周練] I want to become a journalist and I wonder what makes a good journalist. In or?der to find the answer,I talked to Mary Harte who worked with the BBC for over 20 years as a journalist.

"You've got to have the interest. If you don't like it,you will not persist because journalism is a very difficult job " Mary said.

Out of experience Mary told me that it was very important for a journalist to watch and talk to people. She said, "What a journalist does is painting a little picture of a story. The information has to be accurate. Therefore, you really have to be watching and listening.”

Mary also emphasized(強(qiáng)調(diào)) the importance of expe?rience. "It is important to collect as many skills as possi?ble to be able to stand out of the crowd. A lot of the skills come from experience,so you won't walk in the street and be a good journalist. You will be a good journalist because you've done it long enough," she said.

Mary said, " You will not get a job handed to you. You will have to be prepared to put in long hours;you will have to be prepared to ring people, and you will have to be prepared to have no money for quite a while. In a word, you will have to work hard for it. Then it gets to the stage where you love your job and you think i Why is somebody paying me to do something that I really love?"'
