Air is a colorless, tasteless and invisible gas that is around us. An “empty” drinking glass and an “empty” room,in fact, are not really empty. Each is filled with air. When the glass is filled with water, the water pushes the air out of the glass.

Air,as gas,has no definite shape, but because it is matter,it takes up space and it has weight. It is easy to show that air is something that takes up space. Stuff a piece of dry cloth into the bottom of a glass so that it will not fall out when the glass is turned upside down. Push the upside-down glass, holding straight up and down, into a jar of water till the glass is completely covered. When the glass is taken out of the water, the cloth is still dry. The air inside the glass shows that it takes up space and keeps the water from coming in.

We all know that the cost of heating our homes will continue to be a significant burden on the family budget. Now millions of people are saving on their heating bills with the EP Portable Heater. With over one million satisfied customers around the world, the new EP heats better and faster, saves more on heating bills, and runs almost silently.

The EP has no exposed heating parts that can cause a fire. The outside of the EP only gets warm to the touch so that it will not burn children or pets.

The EP will not reduce oxygen in the room. With other heaters, you’ll notice that you get sleepy when the heat comes on because they are burning up oxygen.

The advanced EP also heats the room evenly, wall to wall and floor to ceiling. It comfortably covers an area of up to 350 square feet. Other heaters heat rooms unevenly with most of the heat concentrated to the center of the room. They only heat an area a few feet around the heater. With the EP, the temperature will not vary in any part of the room.

The EP comes with a 3-year warranty (保修) and a 60-day unconditional refund.

Now, we have a special offer for 10 days, during which you can enjoy a half price discount and a free delivery. If you order after that, we reserve the right to either accept or reject order requests at the discounted price.

Madrid, capital of Spain, is a city with large numbers of historic sites resting in the shadows of modern skyscrapers.

This city of over 3, 23 million people, up from 2,88 million in 2000, is proud of Western Europe’s royal palace, considered by many to be Madrid’s most beautiful building. Inside the Royal Palace 2,800 rooms are decorated with museum-quality furniture and artwork.

For a refreshing choice, relax beside the swimming pool on the roof of the Emperador Hotel. Enjoy delicious desserts and drinks while viewing the city, or take a dip in the cool water.

People in the United States honor their parents with two special days:Mother’s Day, on the second Sunday in May, and Father’s Day, on the third Sunday in June. These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible (有責(zé)任感的) citizens. They give love and care. These two days make us think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home. More fathers must help with child care.

These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother’s Day people wear carnations. A red one symbolizes a living mother. A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services to honor parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery (墓地).On these days families get together at home, as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecues for Father’s Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.

Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought in stores. It is not the value of the gift that is important, but it is “the thought that counts”. Greeting card stores, florists, candy makers, bakeries, telephone companies, and other stores do a lot of business during these holidays.

1.Which of the following is NOT a reason for children to show love and respect for parents?

A. Parents bring up children.

B. Parents give love and care to children.

C. Parents educate children to be good persons.

D. Parents pass away before children grow up.

2.What do you think “florists” do?

A. They sell flowers.

B. They make and sell bread.

C. They offer enough room for having family parties.

D. They sell special gifts for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

3.What do you know from the passage?

A. Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are both in May.

B. Fewer women worked outside the home in the past.

C. Not all the children respect their parents

D. Fathers are not as important as mothers at home.

4.On Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, ________.

A. people usually have family parties

B. everyone goes to visit the cemetery

C. children always go to parents’ home

D. hand-made cards are the most valuable gifts

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2015-2016學(xué)年山西大同第一中學(xué)高二上學(xué)期期末英語(yǔ)試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

Government statistics recently showed that in the UK, more than 3,000 people a year experience electric shocks in their home. A smaller number of people are killed after contact with power lines outside the home. Electric shocks can cause a person’s heart or breathing to stop, can also cause burns and are potentially fatal. It is essential for people to learn basic first aid techniques to deal with such emergencies.

What to do?

If you are the first person to reach someone who has had an electric shock, don’t touch them!

If they are still holding the appliance that has given them shock (e.g. a hair dryer), unplug it or turn off the power at its source. Under no circumstances will you try to move the appliance with your hand!

If you can’t turn off the power, use a piece of wood, like a broom handle or a chair, to separate the victim from the appliance or the power source. You may even be able to do this with a folded newspaper.

The victim must remain lying down. If they are unconscious, victims should be placed on their side. But they should not be moved if there is a possibility of neck or spine injuries unless it is absolutely necessary.

It is essential to maintain the victim’s body heat, so make sure you cover him or her with a blanket before you do anything else. If the victim is not breathing, apply mouth-to-mouth resuscitation(恢復(fù)呼吸). Keep the victim’s head low until professional help arrives.

If the electric shock has been caused by an external power line, the dangers to the victim and to anybody providing first aid are much greater.

1.What kind of passage is it?

A. An advertisement. B. A horror story.

C. A news report. D. First aid emergency advice.

2.The underlined sentence, “Under no circumstances will you try to move the appliance with your hand!” implies that .

A. you should move the appliance that caused it

B. you should pick up the appliance and turn off the electricity

C. it is very dangerous to touch the appliance with your hands

D. it is unnecessary to unplug the appliance with your hands

3.If you can’t turn off the power, you cannot separate the victim from the appliance or the power source by using _________.

A. a folded newspaper B. a blanket

C. a broom handle D. a chair

4.When a person has got an electric shock, you should .

A. separate the victim from the appliance and let them sit up

B. keep the victim warm and help them breathe again

C. move the victim onto their side if they have got neck injuries

D. keep the victim’s head high until professional help arrives
