Millions of people all over the world use the word OK.In fact, some people say the word is used more often than any other word in the world.OK means all right or acceptable. It expresses agreement or approval.

1. Some people say it came from the Native American Indian tribe known as the Choctaw(喬克托語).The Choctaw word “okeh” means the same as the American word okay.Experts say early explorers in the American West spoke the Choctaw language in the nineteenth century.

But many people doubt this.Language expert Allen Walker Read wrote about the word “OK” in reports published in the 1960s.He said the word began being used in the 1830s. 2. Some foreign-born people wrote “ all correct” as “o-l-l-k-o-r-r-e-c-t”, and used the letters OK.Other people say a railroad worker named Obadiah Kelly invented the word long ago. They said he put the first letters of his name---O and K---on each object people gave him to send on the train.

3. The organization supported Martin Van Buren for president in 1840.They called their group the OK club. The letters were taken from the name of the town where Martin was born---Old Kinderhook, New York.

Then there is the expression A-OK.It is a space-age expression. It was used in 1961 during the flight of astronaut Alan Shepard. He was the first American to be launched into space. His flight ended when his spacecraft landed in the ocean, as planned.Shepard reported, “Everything is A-OK.” 4. One story says it was first used during the early days of the telephone to tell an operator that a message had been received.

There are also funny ways to say okay. 5. These expressions were first used in the 1930s.Today, a character on the American television series “The Simpsons” says it another way.He says okely-doke.

A.Some people say okey-dokey or okey-doke.

B.Still others say a political organization invented the word.

C.Therefore, it has become popular in that area from then on.

D.But many experts don’t agree on what the expression means.

E.Still, language experts do not agree about where the word came from.

F.It was a short way of writing a different spelling of the word “all correct”.

G.However, some experts say the expression did not begin with the space age.

Anyone who has ever tried to stop smoking knows how difficult it is to quit. There is no lack of information about how unhealthy smoking is for you- not to mention the unpleasant smell. So why would teens ever begin to smoke?

1. Research shows that the majority of smokers lit up their first cigarette in their early or mid-teens, precisely at a time when children are beginning to establish their own identity apart from their parents. Smoking can be an act of rebellion(反抗) against parents or authority figures, as well as a way to fit in with others and feel accepted.

Here are some things that parents can do to help a child stay smoke-free.

Start talking to your teen about how bad smoking is for him early, well before his teens. Keep talking, too. 2.

3. For example, smoking makes your hair and clothing smell bad, stains the teeth, and reduces your lung power to play sports.

4. Talk about the addictive power of smoking and tell him while those few cigarettes are his choice, the addiction that occurs shortly afterwards makes him powerless to decide whether or not he wants to light up.

Work on self-esteem(自尊) and self-confident with your teen. Much of the attraction of smoking is to gain acceptance. 5.

Young teens live in the moment, too.

Play on your child’s desire to make his own choices.

The answer lies in the develop-mental stage of your teens.

Give your child the facts, but focus on the things he can relate to.

Help your teen to feel good about himself without having to smoke.

One discussion will not be enough to help your child not to smoke.

They won’t be aware of how powerful addictive smoking is in a very short time.

Every scientific field uses the scientific method to conduct experiments. Performing experiments is very important in the field of psychology (心理學). Before beginning a study, however, any scientist who wishes to perform an experiment should be familiar with the steps of the scientific method. 1.

He gave the two-foot-tall Charles a name, General Tom Thumb. He taught Tom how to sing, dance, act and tell jokes. When he felt Tom was ready to perform on stage, he made up ads. To stir up great interest, he said that Tom was eleven years old and had come from England.

科目:高中英語 來源:2015-2016學年甘肅天水第一中學高二上學期期中英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

When I was growing up in America, I was ashamed of my mother’s Chinese English. Because of her English, she was often treated unfairly. People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.

My mother has realized the limitations of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on phone to pretend I was her. I was forced to ask for information or even to yell at people who had been rude to her. One time I had to call her stockbroker (股票經紀人).I said in an adolescent voice that was not very convincing, “This is Mrs.Tan...” And my mother was standing beside me, whispering loudly, “Why he don’t send me check already two weeks ago.”And then, in perfect English I said, “I’m getting rather concerned. You agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasn’t arrived.”

Then she talked more loudly. “What he want? I come to New York tell him front of his boss.” And so I turned to the stockbroker again, “I can’t tolerate any more excuse. If I don’t receive the check immediately, I am going to have to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week.”

The next week we ended up in New York. While I was sitting there red-faced, my mother, the real Mrs.Tan, was shouting to his boss in her broken English.

When I was a teenager, my mother’s broken English embarrassed me. But now, I see it differently. To me, my mother’s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is vivid, direct, and full of observation and wisdom. It was the language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed ideas, and made sense of the world.

1.Why was the author’s mother poorly served?

A. She was unable to speak good English.

B. She was often misunderstood.

C. She was not clearly heard.

D. She was not very polite.

2.What does the author think of her mother’s English now?

A. It confuses her.

B. It embarrasses her.

C. It helps her understand the world.

D. It helps her tolerate rude people.

3.We can infer from the passage that Chinese English . .

A. is clear and natural to non-native speakers

B. is vivid and direct to non-native speakers

C. has a very bad reputation in America

D. may bring inconvenience in America
