Around 200 people who thought their only experience of the London 2012 Olympic Games would be minor heats of synchronized swimming (花樣游泳) have received an unexpected change to the men's 100m final because of an embarrassing ticketing mistake.

The London 2012 Organizing Committee (Locog) confirmed on Wednesday that an error in its ticket selling had led to four synchronized swimming competitions being oversold by 10, 000 tickets.

Locog and its ticket agent spent the Christmas period contacting ticket holders and offering them alternatives that included the tickets they had applied for but unsuccessful. The changes need no additional cost. It has also offered to return any discrepancy (差額) if the new tickets cost less than the originals. Locog said the replacement tickets would come from a number of unsold seats across the Olympic Games an it was doing all it could to make up the error to the fans who bought tickets.

Locog said the error occurred in the summer, between the first and second round of ticket sales, when a member of staff made a mistake, entering “20,000” into the computer rather than the correct figure of 10,000 remaining tickets. The error was discovered when Locog checked the number of tickets that had been sold against the final seating numbers, and began contacting ticket holders before Christmas.

Thousands of ticket holders have already struck lucky, changing to tickets for major events including swimming and athletics finals, and in around 200 cases the hottest of all, the men’s 100m final. Locog said the decision to award 100m final tickets was made because one of the synchronized swimming competitions was on the same afternoon as the event, August 5.

Bernice Gallego sat down one day this summer, as she does pretty much every day,and began listing items on eBay. She dug into a box and pulled out a baseball card. She stopped for a moment and admired the picture. “Red Stocking B. B. Club of Cincinnatti,” the card read, under the reddish brown color photo of ten men with their socks pulled up to their knees.

As a collector and seller, it’s her job to spot old items that might have value today. It’s what Bernice,72, and her husband, Al Gallego, 80, have been doing since 1974 at their California antique store.

This card, she figured, was worth selling on eBay. She took a picture, wrote a description and put it up for auction. She put a $10 price tag on it, deciding against $15 because it would have cost her an extra 20 cents. Later that night she got a few odd inquiries---someone wanting to know whether the card was real, someone wanting her to end the caution and sell him the card immediately.

The card is actually 139 years old. Sports card collectors call the find “extremely rare” and estimate the card could fetch five, or perhaps, six figures at caution.

Just like that, Bernice is the least likely character ever for a rare-baseball card story. “I didn’t even know baseball existed that far back,” Gallego says, “I don’t think that I’ve ever been to a baseball game.” The theory is that the card came out of a storage space they bought a few years back. It is not uncommon in their line of work to buy the entire contents of storage units for around $200.

When she met with card trader Rick Mirigian, she found out what the card was-----an 1869 advertisement with a picture of the first professional baseball team, the Cincinnatti Red Stocking.

“When I came to meet her and she took it out of a sandwich bag and she was smoking a cigarette, I almost fainted,” Mirigian says. “ They’ve uncovered a piece of history that few people will ever be able to imagine. That card is history. It’s like unearthing a Mona Lisa or a Picasso.”

67. What can we conclude from paragraph 3?

A.Bernice had to pay some fees for her card on eBay.

B.Bernice wanted to end the caution that night.

C.Bernice decided to sell the card for $15.

D.eBay charged her 20 cents for the card.

68. The underlined word “fetch” in paragraph 4 most probably means “_______”.

   A. go and bring   B. add up to   C. go down to   D. be sold for

69. From the passage we may learn that _______.

   A. Bernice is a baseball fan

   B. Bernice is the last person to purchase the rare-baseball card

   C. Bernice unexpectedly became the owner of the rare-baseball card

D. Bernice didn’t realize the value of the card until she put it up for auction

70. What would be the best title for the passage?

A.A Surprisingly Valuable Discovery

B.The History of the Baseball Card

C.Bernice Gallego---A lucky collector

D. Sports Card Collectors

China is going green. In order to reduce air pollution and oil shortages, carmakers have announced their plans to develop hybrid vehicles (混合燃料汽車) for the Chinese market.Toyota’s hybrid car Prius will be ready to drive in China this week.Let’s have a look at the new car.
Any vehicle is a hybrid run on a rechargeable battery and gas.Hybrid cars have special engines, which are smaller than traditional gas engines. The gasoline engine provides 99 percent of the power when the car is going at a steady speed. A specially designed battery motor provides extra power for running up hills or when it needs to speed up.
Step into a Prius, and turn on the engine. The first thing you notice is that it is quieter than a traditional car.At this point, the car’s gas engine is at rest. The electric motor will provide power until the car reaches about 24km/h.If you stay at a low speed, you are effectively driving an electric car, with no gas being used, and no waste gas given off.
The computer decides when to use the gas engine, when to go electric, and when to use a combination of the two.If you go over 24km/h, when you step on the gas pedal (油門), you are telling the computer how fast you want to go.
The electric motor recharges automatically using a set of batteries. And when driving at a high speed, the gas engine not only powers the car but also recharges the batteries. When you use the brake, the electric motor in the wheels will work like a generator (發(fā)電機) to produce electricity to recharge the batteries. As a result, the car’s batteries will last for around 200,000 miles.

Britain is facing a sharp rise in its rat population as growing numbers of people leave fast food scraps in the street ,an environment group warned .Keep Britain Tidy said the rodents(嚙齒動物)were stopping their traditional hunts underground and were roaming the streets ,tempted by discarded burgers ,pizzas and crisps. “The rat population is on the rise and soon it’ll be as common to see a rodent on our street as it is to see a dog or a cat,” said group Director ,Sue Nelson. The practice of dumping fast food litter and scraps on the street rather than in the trash—with young men the worst offenders—was behind the rise. According to the National Rodent Survey in 2005, Britain’s rat population has grown by nearly one quarter since 2000 and is now estimated at 60 million ,two million more than the human population. On average a rat can give birth every 24—28 days and just a single pair of rats can produce a colony of 2,000 a year. Around 200 people a year get Weil’s Disease –an infection which can lead to liver or kidney(肝腎)failure and eventually death and which is arrived in rat’s waste. To highlight the issue ,Keep Britain Tidy launched a cinema ad entitled “How close do you want them to get?” The ad gave a shocking image of a young woman sleeping in a bed of rots –echoing the nightmare scene from James Herbert’s classic horror tale The Rats, in which mutant rodents begin to prey on(捕食)humans.

China_is_going_green. In order to reduce air pollution and oilshortages, automobile manufacturers have announced their plans to develop hybrid vehicles (混合燃料汽車) for the Chinese market. Toyota's hybrid car Prius will be ready to drive in China this week. Let's have a look at the new car.

Any vehicle is a hybrid when it combines two or more sources of power. Hybrid cars run off a rechargeable battery and gasoline. Hybrid cars have special engines, which are smaller than traditional gasoline engines. They run at 99 percent of their power when the car is cruising (勻速行駛). A specially designed battery motor provides extra power for running up hills or when extra acceleration is needed.

Step into a Prius, and turn on the engine. The first thing you notice is how much quieter it is than a traditional car. At this point, the car's gasoline engine is dormant (休眠). The electric motor will provide power until the car reaches about 24 km/h. If you stay at a low speed, you are effectively driving an electric car, with no gasoline being used, and no waste gas gives off.

The onboard(車載的) computer makes the decision about when to use a gas engine, when to go electric, and when to use a combination of the two. If you go over 24 km/h, when you step on the gas pedal (油門), you are actually telling the computer how fast you want to go.

The electronic motor recharges automatically using a set of batteries. When driving at high speed, the gasoline engine not only powers the car, but also charges the batteries. Any time you use the brake, the electric motor in the wheels will work like a generator and produce electricity to recharge the batteries. As a consequence, the car's batteries will last for around 200,000 miles.

Your Car Is Ready for Take-off

The flying car has been talked about for many years, but now it appears that the idea is about to become a reality.

An international company has built a two-seater plane that, at the touch of a button ,transforms into a car perfectly suitable for driving on public roads. It has been designed so that the wings fold up automatically; and it takes just 15 seconds to switch between flying and driving. With its wings fully open and the propeller(螺旋槳)spinning, it can take off from any airfield.

Flying cars are quicker than traditional ones for travelling from city to city, and they can run on ordinary fuel. Another big advantage is that they are cool ,like something you would see in an action film. At the moment 9 however, the flying car’s wheels are illegal to leave the ground. That is not because of technical reasons or problems with the design. It is because the various road and aircraft authorities simply cannot agree on whether it is a car or a plane.

“The government and the authorities have never thought seriously about a flying car, says Alan Price ,the president of the company that has developed it. “I wanted a car that could fly and drive ,but it is difficult to find an organization prepared to insure the vehicle against accidents.

Nevertheless ? the company hopes to produce and deliver its first flying car soon. The company already has orders for 40 of them. The majority the potential customers are older and some are retired。There have even been orders from some people who have no pilot's license.

The flying car will cost around $ 200.000. “For an airplane , thats a very reasonable price, but for a car, It's quite expensive,” explains Alan. “But it just is not possible to make a $ 10,000 flying car yet. ”

This latest means of transport will not become a mass-market item in the near future, but in the long term it has the potential to change the way you travel. It will become no more expensive than driving your car on the motorway. Travel time could be reduced by more than half.

So the next time you are told to fasten your seat belt, it may be to prepare for take-off.

A.many people think driving it not very safe

B.it’s hard to decide whether it's a car or a plane

C.the government and the authorities don’t accept it

D.there are still some technical problems to be solved

3.We can learn from the passage that______.

A.few people will be able to afford a flying car

B.flying cars may share the market in the future

C.traffic jams will disappear because of flying cars

D.driving a flying car doesn’t require a pilot’s license
