Dear Dr.Servaas,

F.Buongiorne
Delta Junction,Arkansas,
Most people have no symptoms resulting from the lung infection, explains histo expert Dr.L.Joseph Wheat, when symptoms do develop, they are usually mild and will disappear without treatment
In some cases, however, histo can spread from the lungs and cause more serious problems.
“Histo is more severe in persons with diseases that reduce thcir immunity or who are receiving immunosuppressive(免疫抑制)medications,”says Dr.Wheat,"In such cases, histo can spread from lungs to other parts of the body.Patients with this type of histoplasmosis usually have constant fever, sweats, and weight loss·Excellent tests are available to diagnose this type of histo, and the treatment is highly effective·”
As mentioned by our Arkansas reader, eye problems accompanied by vision loss have been reported long after the first infection.
"Histo is thought by some to be a cause of spots on the back of the eye, called ‘histo spots’,”notes Dr·Wheat.“These injuries cause no problems in some patients, while in others they cause visual loss. There is no proof that histo causes these spots, however,as the organism is not found in the injured parts, and treatment for histo is not effective for the eye spots.”
People catch histoplasmosis by breathing extremely small spores(孢子)of the histoplasma fungus into their lungs·This fungus is commonly found in areas polluted by bird or bat droppings such as caves, chicken cages, barns(谷倉),and under bridges. It will spread through the air during construction or whenever plowing, sweeping,or digging disturbs the soil.

B.The disease will make people put on weight.
C.The disease won’t cause serious problems and no medicine is effective for it·
D.The disease doesn’t,t necessarily have a serious effect on every patient with it·

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個(gè)選項(xiàng)(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項(xiàng)。
Our oldest daughter is having trouble letting go of an old red sofa.
It’s not the sofa she’s having trouble letting go of as much as the memories. It was their first sofa.It has been loaded and unloaded onto moving trucks seven times.Three kids have eaten on it,dripped on it,and jumped on it.
Yet she’s having a hard time letting go and asked if I thought that was strange.
“Completely,” I said.“You get it from me.”
When we were ready to get rid of our baby things,I sold our crib (嬰兒床) at the neighborhood garage sale.I had pieces of it in the garage and the other pieces of it still in the house.A young woman said she wanted to buy it.
My throat tightened and the tears began to well. She pulled out cash and I cheered up.
But by the time I returned with the other pieces to the crib,I was all sobbing.“Have you considered that maybe you’re not ready to sell it?” the woman asked.
“No-o-o-o,” I cried.“It’s fine,really,” I said.“Take it.”
Our attachment to stuff grows in direct relationship to the amount of time it has sat in one place. The longer it sits, the harder it is to get rid of it.You think: “Hey,we’ve hung onto it this long – it must be valuable!” As though yellowing and a layer of dust increase value.
People who find it extremely hard to part with things have been made into entertainment in a television show called Hoarders. If an episode (集) of that isn’t depressing enough for you, producers now offer Extreme Hoarders. Both of which are not to be outdone by Storage Wars,a show about aggressive people who bid on other people’s storage units.
Let the sofa go,I told my daughter. It served its purpose. You can get a new one.Give the kids some crackers (餅干) and juice and it will be like the old one in six weeks.

C.show that people in TV shows live the same lives as ordinary people do
D.prove that it’s actually common for people to find it hard to get rid of old stuff
4.Which opinion might the writer agree with according to the article?
A.If you give away old stuff regularly, you are wasteful.
B.If the old stuff has done what it was supposed to,then let it go.

Cursive (手寫體)is about to become extinct. Do we raise the red flag? To teach or not to teach cursive is the question that several state education departments are struggling with.
Before you read this write-up $ do a simple exercise. Pick a pen and paper and start writing in cursive. Yes,that fancy handwriting that you learned in grade school. You may not have forgotten the good times you had while writing loopy Ps and Gs as well as curly Ms and Ns. However, the chances are that you won't be able to write it as excellently as you used to. Some people are good at making the perfect loops and curls, while some are bad. I am still terrible at it.
Cursive is hardly used by kids anymore as even adults don 't write in this style, unless they are using it for their signature. Learning this handwriting was a usual practice in school for several decades. However,in 2011, the Indiana Department of Education made it optional (可選擇的)for schools to teach cursive writing to the students. In fact, there were 46 more states who have done the same. There are some who believe that it is high time for cursive to retire from school curriculum. After all,if we don ’ t leave the past behind,we cannot make way for new things. If you walk into any classroom, you would find children using keyboards to communicate in written form. On the other hand, fans of this cursive insist on its usefulness. They remind us that if we stop teaching and learning cursive in schools, very soon most of our historical documents will become hard to us.
Where do we stand on this subject? Is it the right time to erase an almost forgotten handwriting and live in the keyboarding world? Or can we do both without compromising (妥協(xié))on our school curriculum? Let me know your thoughts on this matter by leaving a comment in the section below.
1.People use cursive when they
A. give their signature B. are in Indiana
C. grow up as adults D. are at school
2. In Indiana school, children
A. must learn cursive
B. are interested in cursive
C. can choose to learn cursive
D. learn cursive everyday
3. It can be inferred that the author
A. prefers to learn cursive
B. is a cursive teacher
C. welcomes people to show their opinions
D. is a very famous expert in education
4. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Is Cursive Writing Necessary?
B. Is Keyboarding World Good?
C. A Keyboarding World
D. Advantages of Cursive

When I am feeling down, I listen to uplifting music to lift my spirits. When I want to calm down, I listen to Indian classical instrumental music. Many times, I look at contemporary Indian art - either in real art galleries or in virtual art galleries on the Web to improve my mood. I particularly like the paintings with vibrant(鮮明的)colors or ones which present a calm landscape using gentle colors.
Art therapy (治療) uses the creation or viewing of art to help people discover and express their feelings. Unlike art for art’s sake, which focuses on the finished piece, art therapy focuses on the process of creation itself. Art therapists believe that the act of making a piece of art triggers internal activity that contributes to physical, emotional and spiritual healing. For people who are not able or ready to create art, going to an art museum or looking through art books or virtual art galleries can also be helpful. Simply viewing art refreshes the spirit and promotes relaxation.
Art therapy is helpful in healing in various ways. The aesthetic(審美的)quality of the work produced can lift a person’s mood, boost self-awareness, improve self-esteem and increase self-confidence. Also, research shows that physiological functions, such as heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration(呼吸), become slow when people are deeply involved in an activity they enjoy.
Because art therapy uses a language other than words, it is often employed in treating patients with physical or emotional illnesses who have difficulty talking about their fears or hopes, or about their anger and other strong emotions. The creation of art helps people get in touch with thoughts and feelings that are often hidden from the conscious mind.
Stress reduction is also a significant benefit. Studies have shown that repressing strong feelings can lead to a buildup of stress, and that stress can intensify pain and the symptoms of various diseases. Because art therapy helps people access their unconscious mind and release pent-up(被抑制的) emotions, it has been found to be very useful in treating those suffering from stress and stress-related illnesses.
1.How does the author start the passage ?
A. By describing his own experiences.
C. By explaining a certain term.
B. By presenting a certain fact.
D. By giving figures.
2.The underlined word “triggers” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by “___________ ”.
A. ignoresB. causesC. decreasesD. prevents
3.All of the following are helpful in healing EXCEPT _____________.
A. going to an art museum
C. surfing on the Internet
B. going to the virtual art galleries
D. reading art books
4.Why is art therapy useful to patients with physical or emotional illnesses?
A. It lets them forget about their fears.
C. It helps improve their social skills.
B. It helps them release their hidden feelings.
D. It helps them hide their feelings.
