For a normal young child nothing is more important than his relationship with his mother. He gains enormous pleasure when what he does pleases her, and is miserable or even afraid when he does things which make her cross. He doesn’t know the difference between good and bad.

It would be ridiculous to talk of a wicked three-year-old. To him it is just as bad to break a cup by accident as to break it on purpose in a fit of temper. If asked at the age of five what is good. He’ll say, ‘Eating up my dinner is good’ or ‘Helping Mummy in the garden is good’. The desire to please is soon directed to his father and then to close relatives, ‘I’m a good boy to help Dad to clean the car’ and ‘I was naughty to throw custard at Granny’. A child is approved of and disapproved of so often that he gradually forms a general idea of what kind of actions are approved of (like being helpful, careful, obedient) and what is disapproved of (line bullying, lying, etc.) This process takes several years. By about the age of 13, he will not say merely ‘Helping my mother is good’, but ‘It’s good to help people’ instead of ‘I’m naughty not to finish my dinner’, he’ll say ‘It’s bad to waste food’, and instead of ‘I was naughty to throw custard at Granny’, he’ll say’ It’s bad to lack self-control’. It’s this general idea of what is good and bad that most people relate to conscience. It’s a widely held view that the kind of conscience you have depends almost entirely on the way you were brought up in the first few years of your life. All this training is stored up in the unconscious mind and later influences your decisions when you have to make moral choices.

1.The child’s ideas of good and bad grow out of ______.

A. his judgment

B.his education given by his parents

C.his desire to please people

D.his behavior

2.It’s senseless to say that a three-year-old child is wicked because ______.

A. he does not see the difference between true and false

B.he does not see the difference between ‘bad’ things that he does by accident and ‘bad ’things that he does on purpose

C.he does not know very much about the world

D.he has difficulty in forming the usual ideas of good and bad

3.Which of the following is true?

A. The child learns general ideas of good and bad in the first few years.

B.Bullying and lying are examples of actions that are approved of.

C.A child of six is likely to say, ‘It’s good to help people.’

D.Childhood training has an influence on the making of moral choices in later life.

As we grow up, we gradually develop a set of our own values or beliefs. These are influenced by society, our family, the education we receive and so on. Once this value system is set up, it’s not easy to change later in life. Financial experts say that everyone also has his own belief of how to manage his money. According to our different values, experts put us in three catagories---the ant, the cricket(蟋蟀) and the snail.

★ The ant — work first

Just like ants who work heart and soul in summer in order to store food for winter, these people don't care about enjoying the moment. They work very hard and save money they earn so that they can enjoy life when they get old and retire. The ant loves to save, but they could make more out of their money if they were willing to invest in some funds and stocks with low risk.

★ The cricket — fun first

The cricket wants to enjoy everything now and doesn't think too much about the future. They even borrow money when they really want something. Many young people now belong to this group. These people have little savings. When they get old, they might have problems. They should learn to save and buy insurance.

★ The snail — life under pressure

The snail refers to people who make life difficult for themselves. They take big long-term loans(貸款) from the bank in order to buy things such as luxury houses. They are happy to take big loans even though they are not sure they can afford them. This can cause problems in the future. They should plan more carefully.

 One’s values may________.

A. be his ways of managing money

B. be his beliefs about society

C. be connected with his education

D. influence his behavior

Mr. Smith always enjoys spending a weekend with his friends, fishing, hunting and playing cards. Besides, he spends money in a very luxurious way. So_______.

A. Mr. Smith belongs to the ant type

B. Mr. Smith belongs to the cricket type

C. Mr. Smith belongs to the snail type

D. it’s hard to tell which kind of person Mr. Smith is

The writer of the passage intends _______.

A. to introduce to us the three types of people with different life style

B. to show us his special attitude to the different people

C. to tell us life is full of joy and happiness all the time

D. to warn us how to live a better life in a new way

According to the passage, the most suitable title would be _______.

A. Nature of Spending

B. What Comes First

C. How to Understand Your Belief

D. Work and Fun

科目:高中英語 來源:2012屆浙江省諸暨市牌頭中學高三2月回頭考英語試卷(帶解析) 題型:閱讀理解

From the health point of view we are living in an amazing age. We are free from many of the most dangerous diseases. A large number of once deadly illnesses can now be cured by modern medicine. It is almost certain that one day medicines will be found for the most stubborn remaining diseases. The expectation of life has increased greatly. But though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before, every day we witness the unbelievable killing of men, women and children on the roads. Man vs the motor-car. It is a never-ending battle which man is losing. Thousands of people the world over are killed or horribly killed each year and we are quietly sitting back and letting it happen.
It has been rightly said that when a man is sitting behind a steering wheel (方向盤), his car becomes the extension of his personality. There is no doubt that the motor-car often brings out a man’s very worst qualities.People who are normally quiet and pleasant may become unrecognizable when they are behind a steering-wheel. They say, they are ill-mannered and aggressive, willful as two-year-olds and completely selfish. All their hidden angers and disappointments seem to be brought to the surface by the act of driving.
The surprising thing is that society smiles so gently on the motorist and seems to forgive his behavior. Everything is done for his convenience. Cities are allowed to become almost uninhabitable because of heavy traffic; towns are made ugly by huge car parks; the countryside is ruined by road networks; and the deaths become nothing more than a number every year, to be easily forgotten.
It is high time a world rule was created to reduce this senseless waste of human life. With regard to driving, the laws of some countries are unbelievably lax (不嚴格) and even the strictest are not strict enough. A rule which was universally accepted could only have an obviously beneficial effect on the accident rate. Here are a few examples of some of the things that might be done. The driving test should be standardized and made far more difficult than it is; all the drivers should be made to take a test every three years or so; the age at which young people are allowed to drive any vehicle should be raised to at least 21; all vehicles should be put through strict tests for safety each year. Even the smallest amount of alcohol in the blood can damage a person's driving ability. Present drinking and driving laws (where they exist) should be made much stricter. Speed limits should be required on all roads. Governments should lay down safety specifications for car factories, as has been done in the USA. All advertising stressing power and performance should be banned. These measures may not sound good enough. But surely nothing should be considered as too severe if it results in reducing the number of deaths. After all, the world is for human beings, not motor-cars.

【小題2】What does the author think of society toward motorists?
A.Society forgives their rude driving.
B.Society laughs at the motorists.
C.Victims of accidents are nothing.
D.Huge car parks are built in the cities and towns.

A.Driving can represent his manners.
B.Driving can show his hidden qualities.
C.Driving can bring out his character.
D.Driving can show the other part of his personality.

Well, Mrs. Evans, I’ve done my best to look after David. I’ve tidied his room up every day, got him a meal together whenever he needed one and made sure he’s always had a clean shirt to put on. It’s not been easy, with two of my own to worry about, as well. David had the best of attention, I must say. But now because I asked him to give up bringing that American friend to his home he has got quite miserable and unfriendly. He comes in at all hours and his behavior---- well, it’s quite hard to put up with---- and it’s all because of this friend. I’m sure he’s a bad influence. You see, David’s a visitor and doesn’t fully understand our ways.

He used to study most evenings. He’s got through quite a bit of work. He did up his room quite nicely, with bookshelves and large posters. He’d ask Mr. Smith and me up for a drink and cheer us up with songs from his country. He’s very good at the guitar, you know.

I don’t want to appear as if I’m running after him, but it’s about time we made it up. I’m sure he’s upset because I told him off. It might be a good idea to take him out for a meal, perhaps even with his friend. I don’t know whether it will do any good but we can try. I’m glad I’ve had this little chat with you, Mrs. Evans, and I’ll let you know how I get on.

1. Mrs. Smith believes that David is not the cause of the quarrel but that the main cause is __________.

A. Mr. Smith                                       B. too much homework

C. David’s behavior                              D. David’s friend

2. Mrs. Smith wants to make up the quarrel by _______.

C. running after David                          D. giving them drinks

3. David’s present attitude to Mrs. Smith is ________.

A. unfriendly             B. cheerful      C. very attentive         D. incomprehensible

4. David is ________.

A. an American friend     B. a singer   C. a visiting student             D. Mrs. Smith’s son
