Men sometimes say, “We are better and cleverer than women. Women never invented things, we do.” It is true that men have invented a lot of useful things: the alphabet, machines, rockets and guns, too. But scientists and archeogists (考古學家)now agree that women invented one very important thing, and it changed the history. They invented agriculture. Before the invention of agriculture men were hunters. They went out every day. Sometimes they killed animals, sometimes animals killed them. Life was difficult and dangerous. Women had to go out every day, too. They collected roots, fruit and gees. Then, one day, more than 10,000 years ago, a woman dropped some grass seeds. She dropped them near her home in the Middle East. They grew and the first wheat was born. The idea grew, too. Women planted roots and fruit trees. Then they could stay at home and look after the children and the animals. Women like baby animals: dogs, cows, sheep and goats. That idea grew, too. Then their husbands did not have to go hunting for meat. They stayed at home. They built villages and cities. Men began civilization—after women invented agriculture.

The age of wealthy youth is over.Today's under-thirties are the first generation for a century who can expect a lower living standard than their parents.

Research into the lifestyle and prospects of people born since 1970 shows that they arelikely to face a lifetime of longer working hours, lower job security and higher taxes than the previous generation.

When they leave work late in the evening they will be more likely to return to a smallrented flat than to a house of their own. When, eventually, they retire it will be on pensions(養(yǎng)老金)far lower in real terms than those of their immediate ancestors.

The findings are revealed in a study of the way the ageing of Britain's population isaffecting different generations.

Anthea Tinker, professor of social gerontology at King's College London, who carried out much of the work, said the growth of the proportion(比例)of people over 50 had reversed the traditional flow of wealth from older to younger generations.

“Today's older middle-aged and elderly are becoming the new winners,” she said.“Theymade relatively small contributions in tax but now makerelativelybigclaimsonthe welfare system.Generations born in the last three to four decades face the prospect of handing over more than a third of their lifetime's earnings to care for them”.

The growing number of older people, many living alone, has also increased demand forproperty and pushed up house prices. While previous generations found it easy to raise a mortgage(抵押), today's under-thirties have to live with their parents or rent.If they can afford to buy a home it is more likely to be a flat than a house.

Laura Lenox-Conyngham, 28, grew up in a large house and her mother did not need to work.Unlike her wealthy parents, she graduated with student and postgraduate loan debts of £13, 000.She now earns about £20,000 a year, preparing food to be photographed for magazines. Her home is a one-bedroom flat in central London and she rents the lounge sofa-bed to her brother.

“My father took pity and paid off my student debts,” she said.“But I still have no pensionand no chance of buying a property for at least a couple of years-and then it will be some-thing small in a bad area.My only hope is the traditional one of meeting a rich man.”

Tinkers research shows Lenox-Conyngham is representative of many young professionals, especially in London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Bristol.

(1)

[ ]

A.

currently wealth flows from old generation to younger generation

B.

traditionally wealth flows from younger generation to old generation

C.

with the increasingly big population of over 50, the trend arises that wealth flows

from younger generation to old generation

D.

with more and more people of over 50, traditions have been reversed

(2)

Why are today's older middle-aged and elderly becoming the new winners?

[ ]

A.

Because they made relatively small contributions in tax, but younger generation will possibly hand over more than a third of their lifetime's earnings for the care of them.

B.

Because they contributed a lot in tax and now can claim much on the welfare system.

C.

Because they made small contributions, but now can make money easily.

D.

Because they outnumber(在數(shù)量上超過)younger generation and enjoy more privileges in the present society.

(3)

Which factor pushed up house prices?

[ ]

A.

Many young men, who live alone, have increased demand for houses.

B.

Many young men need to rent more houses.

C.

It is easy to apply for a mortgage for young generation.

D.

The number of older people, many of whom live alone, becomes bigger and bigger.

(4)

We can conclude from the passage that ________.

[ ]

A.

today's under-thirties are leading a miserable life in Britain

B.

Laura Lenox-Conyngham's attitude to work and life represents that of many young professionals in Britain

life can get harder for under-thirties in Britain

BELIEVE it or not, the color of the tie Barack Obama wore to the inauguration(就職典禮)is now a hotly debated topic. The level of public interest in Obama’s tie might seem strange but many people believe his choice will symbolize the type of government he plans to run, as the color of a politician’s tie is thought to convey ideas of power, trustworthiness and more.

  Polities of ties.

It may be the least practical item of male dress, but it is arguably the most expressive. In the UK and many other coun-tries around the world, conservative(保守的)politicians may wear a blue tie and their liberal opponents a red one.In America, the colors go the other way round. The Republicans have in recent years become associated with the color red, and the Democrats with blue. But in spite of this, bush wears blue ties more often than any other color.

  What they mean

According to Sharon Haver, editor of focusonstyle.com, in America the feelings associated with colors overrule their political significance.“a guy who want to be regarded as strong and in charge would wear red,” Haver says.Unsurprisingly, the business tycoon Donald Trump is known for wearing red ties. But what about blue? According to Haver, “Blue is a softer color… Look at the sky. It’s peaceful and calm and trustworthy.”

Selecting the right tie for the right occasion.

  ●Perfect job interview tie.

Perhaps no other tie -wearing occasion is as important as the job interview.Gilchrist, the fashion expert, advises playing it safe and choosing a conservative one.Best choices are solids, stripes or small patterns. An excellent color is burgundy(深紅色)or another serious color.Avoid pink or yellow, which suggests that the wearer lacks gravity.

Pattern ties, Gilchrist suggests, should be limited to a maximum of three colors.A striped tie is a safe choice as this is acceptable to everyone.Last, Gilchrist recommends saving the expensive “hip” tie for those applying for glamorous creative jobs.

  ●Date-night tie

When picking out the right tie for taking a girl out on a date, spend more time considering color than pattern.According to studies, women are attracted to men wearing the color blue, because blue gives the image of a “stable, faithful, constant, always there” person. So what is the worst color to wear on a date? “Flattened caterpillar(毛蟲)yellow-green,” according to Gilchrist, “it will repel both sexes equally.”

(1)

Why are people interested in the tie that Obama wore to the inauguration?

[ ]

A.

Because they think the tie he wore will enable them to know about his personalities and policies.

B.

Because they want to advise him how to select an appropriate tie for such a big occasion.

C.

Because they think the tie will tell if he is trustworthy as they expected when he assumes office.

D.

Because they believe the tie is an essential part of dressing to a mature politician like Obama.

(2)

What can we infer about Bush, the former president, from the passage?

[ ]

A.

He was probably liberal in his policies when he was in power.

B.

He was a Republican when he served as president.

C.

He wore only blue ties and had no ties of alternative colors.

D.

He wanted to make himself unique by the tie that he wore.

(3)

The example of “the business tycoon Donald Trump” is given to _________.

[ ]

A.

prove that color reflects people’s feelings to a certain degree

B.

show that Donald is so wealthy that he can afford expensive ties

C.

tell that Donald is physically strong and can handle everything

D.

explain that red is a popular color, especially with businessmen

(4)

Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the text?

[ ]

A.

Ties can be ignored by politicians since they are the least practical item of male dress.

B.

Do choose ties carefully before dating, because it is the most important occasion.

C.

Why to avoid pink or yellow ties in job interviews is that they don’t match the atmosphere.

D.

The more colorful the tie is, the more likely you’ll get the job you want.
