Question:

Hi,Carolyn. I am Amanda. My problem is with Stacy,my roommate of three years (we,re all 24) . When my other roommate,Joanna, and I have an issue (such as emptying the dishwasher) , we talk through it calmly and non-defensively,we apologize, and it's all good. Stacy becomes extremely defensive, gets worked up,and lashes(嚴(yán)厲斥責(zé)) back at us. What's more, she’ 11 never .bring up anything that bothers her. She keeps it all bottled up,and then occasionally will explode.

She's also super-competitive with us about everything, extremely judgmental and negative. She gets angry that I keep in contact with certain people she doesn't like. I don't let her control me. I do my own thing and generally feel sorry for her,but I'm finding it harder and harder to ignore her controlling nature.

We've been friends for six years now,and I've gotten to the point where I know this is terrible and I need to move out when my lease(租約) is up next year. I just need to figure out how to live with her in the meantime!I'm constantly living in fear of the next explosion.

                                                      Portland

   Answer:

It's not only an exhausting way to live, but also completely counterproductive. There isn't much you can do about her; it's neither possible nor your place to re-raise her into someone comfortable with weaknesses in herself and others.

However, there is a lot you can do about yourself, just by opening up and backing off, which might also serve Stacy well if any kindness toward her is sincere. When she gets defensive, say: aHey,you're my friend and I love you. This really is just about dishes." When she turns things back on you, weigh whether she has a point and freely acknowledge when she does instead of getting defensive right away.

Try to be calm and warm. Give her defensiveness no fuel. If this doesn't repair the friendship,it will at least make you live in peace.

I was bom in England with perfect hearing. In 1990,when I was five,my family moved to the United States. I started getting ear infections every three months or so. We didn't have health insurance at the time and when I got a third infection,my parents couldn't  pay for the treatment. I went deaf in my right ear and was left with 20 percent hearing in my left.

There was always music on in my house when I was little, because my dad was a DJ,and he played all kinds of music. When I grew up,I was hooked on deejaying(播放音樂) . I wanted to leam more. I e-mailed DJ Shiftee,a well-known New York City DJ:“I know you like a challenge. How about teaching a deaf person to deejay?” He wrote back the next day: “Challenge accepted." He tutored me twice a week for two years, helping me develop correct technique. I practiced four hours a dai. Nbw when I'm performing, muscle memory takes over.

When I started,I wouldn't tell the club managers I was deaf. I would just show up,introduce myself, and start playing music. At the end of the night, they were always so surprised that I couldn't hear. Sometimes I would bring doctors’ notes because they wouldn't believe me. It was what I wanted: they were giving me the chance to play because I was good, not out of sympathy.

For a show,I set up one speaker facing my left side,my good ear. The speakers that play the bass(低音) are on the floor behind me so I can hear some of the lower frequencies and feel the beat in my feet. I also use software that turns the music into lines of color on a computer screen. For example, red is the bass, and green is the melody(主旋律) .I'm visually hearing the music. What I love about deejaying is the creativity, what you can do with a machine, two turntables, and a mixer.

I go to elementary schools for the deaf and talk to the students about motivation and believing in themselves. I'm big on talking to the parents.    Cancers Cells in our bodies are always dividing,as new cells replace old ones. 36 Cancer cells divide rapidly, and form growths called tumours(腫瘤). They can spread to take over a whole organ and stop it working properly. If cells break away from the tumour, they can travel to other parts of the body and start new tumours.

We do not know why some people get cancer while others don't. But faulty genes are certainly the cause of some cancers. Others are caused by chemicals in the environment.

Cancer is not a single disease. 37 The most common types affect the digestive system and lungs. In women, cancers of the breasts and cervix (子宮頸) are also common.

Smoking is the cause of almost all cases of lung cancer. Tobacco smoke contains chemicals which can damage the lungs. The more cigarettes a person smokes, the greater their risk of suffering from lung cancer. 38

Cancers of the skin are also quite common. Many types of radiation, especially ultraviolet rays (紫外線) from the Sun,can damage skin cells and cause cancer.

Most cancers can be treated successfully if they are caught early enough. Some treatments involve surgery to remove the tumour. This is often followed by a course of strong drugs. 39 They kill healthy cells as well as cancer cells.

In the most up-to-date treatments, drugs are delivered directly to the cancer cells using “magic bullets”. These are special antibodies which only attach themselves to cancer cells.

Similarly, radiotherapy(放射療法) is a type of cancer treatment which uses radiation to kill cancer cells. A narrow bean(光線) of radiation is focused directly at a tumour. 40

   A. Most skin cancers are completely curable.

   B. And the healthy cells nearby are not damaged.

   C. Many of these drugs have unpleasant side-effects.

   D. An X-ray of the lungs shows the position of a tumour.

   E. Different cancers can affect almost any part of the body.

   F. But sometimes the process goes wrong, and a cancer cell is formed.

   G. Fortunately, the risk of getting cancer is reduced when someone stops smoking.

A group of police blocks off narrow streets with their cars. They move quietly, spot the target, and close in,taking a group of smugglers(走私販) by surprise. A few seconds later, the victims are discovered.

The location: a street market in the city of Sao Paulo,Brazil. The victims: birds,American lizards, and tortoises snatched(搶走) from the wild. The smugglers planned to sell them at the market.

“People who want to own a wild animal fbel the illegal wild animal trade,” says Juliana Machado Ferreira,a National Geographic explorer who works to fight the illegal wildlife trade. Removing too many animals from the wild upsets the balance of nature. aIf people truly love wildlife, they will want them to be free,” she says.

Smugglers use special ways to take the animals through airport security checks. But smart police use their own tricks to catch them. Read the following story.

How many finches — small singing birds — can you fit inside a purse? At least 25 ,as it turns out. When a woman from Guyana,a country in northeast South America, started acting nervously at JFK airport,U.S., customers and border protection agents x-rayed her bags.    To wear rohes and wigs(長(zhǎng)袍和假發(fā)) ,or to not wear robes and wigs: that is the question. In 1776,when the United States declared its independence from England, the Founding Fathers set out to create a government and wrote the most important political documents. It is not surprising that they used English common law as the basis of our society’s laws. Apparently, they also debated court dress. Thomas Jefferson, and a few of his colleagues, wanted judges to wear suits in order to rid the influence of the English era. John Adams,on the other hand, wanted to keep the tradition alive. The Founding Fathers did what they did best, and compromised. They threw away the uncomfortable wigs and kept the robes.

At the time,Supreme Court Justices usually wore red robes. But Chief Justice John Marshall changed the dress rules by putting on a black robe.

He started a new fashion and judges in the United States have been wearing black ever since.

The tradition of robes came from the English, but why were the English wearing robes in the first place? The wearing of robes by justices can date back to the 15th century. English judges wore red, green, reddish blue, and black robes depending on the fashions of the time. In 1635,it was decided that reddish blue robes should be worn in the summer and black for the winter. It was also decided that red robes should be worn on ceremonial occasions.

The origins of wearing the black robe in England are debated among historians. Most historians say that the black robe tradition started with the mourning of the death of Queen Mary II in 1694.

However,in the United States, the tradition of black robes Was not always followed. Former Idaho Supreme Court Justice,Byron Johnson, chose to wear a royal blue robe stating in a letter to his friend that he sat in the “black and blue” court.

Wearing black robes will most likely continue in the United States for a long time to come. However, everyone, especially judges, should take a moment to thank Thomas Jefferson for convincing John Adams to give up those ridiculous wigs.

6. The Founding Fathers disagreed about whether.

   A. judges should debate like English judges

   B. judges should dress in the English way

   C. they should obey English common law

   D. they should set up a new government

7. What was Jefferson's attitude towards the English tradition?

    A. He doubted it. B. He tolerated it.

   C. He was against it. D. He was uncertain of it.

8. Black robes became a tradition of American courts because of .

   A. John Adams’ argument

   B. John Marshall's example

   C. the dress rules in English courts

   D. the Founding Fathers’ compromises

9. The black robe in English courts may go back to.

   A. the 15th century   B. the 18th century   C. the year of 1635   D. the year of 1694

10. How does the author sound when telling the stories in the text?

   A. Humorous. B. Anxious.

   C. Cautious. D. Serious.

Budget cuts and an increased focus on testing have made field trips, once a popular way to get students out of the classroom, increasingly rare.

“Local school districts don't have the funds (money kept for particular purposes) anymore”’ says Stephanie Norby, director ofthe Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies in Washington,   D. C. The Smithsonian museums are some of the most popular field trip destinations in the country. Although there is little hard data to definitively prove that schools are taking fewer field trips,Norby says it seems as though fewer schools have visited the Smithsonian in recent years.

Money once spent on field trips is being spent to help students prepare for standardized tests that might make or break a teacher's evaluation, according to Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers,a union that represents more than 1 million educators nationwide.

“In school these days,if people have a dollar to spare, they spend it on test prep because they get regulated there,”she says.

Field trips provide students with a window to the real world that they don't get in the classroom, and they can help students . understand real-world applications of seemingly abstract topics in math and science, says Weingarten.

Susan Singer,CEO of Field Trip Factory,an organization that has spent the last 18 years designing free field trip outlines for schools nationwide, says she thinks schools are merely scheduling around testing.

“During testing periods,we don't see a lot of field trips,” she says. “Either right before or right after a standardized test,we get a shut door.”

Spending time outside the classroom doesn't mean students aren't learning knowledge that could show up on standardized tests. Several studies have shown that students acquire more information and skills through the type of experience-based learning that field trips provide when compared to in-class learning.

A field trip should be relevant to topics students are studying in school. That way,the Smithsonian's Norby says,it will have a lasting effect.

32. Why is it difficult for schools to take field trips according to Norby?

   A. Students dislike the trips.

   B. They are short of finances.

   C. They have fewer destinations.

   D. Field trips are harder to organize.

33. What do we learn from Weingarten?

   A. Standardized tests can measure student learning.

   B. Money for field trips is used for test preparation.

   C. Schools’ education budgets are properly regulated.

   D. Schools encourage students to know the real world.

34. In the author's opinion,field trips .

   A. may lead to lower test scores

   B. sometimes waste a lot of time

   C. help students gain more knowledge

   D. are less important than in-class learning

35. The text is mainly about .

   A. the advantages of in-class learning

   B. the effect of standardized tests

   C. the problem of budget cuts

   D. the decline of field trips

I still remember that night after my senior high school entrance examination. Even though I was at the top of my class,I was not good in history. At around 10 pm,I tried to sleep, and my eyes just wouldn't close. Suddenly,I saw my dad coming into my room, with smile on his face, asked me to go to sleep. I told him that I couldn't get to sleep. He called me into my room and put his hand on my head. I didn't even realize that I had fallen asleep. I took up my exam the next day and the result was satisfied.
