Dash of Hope
"Dash" is a symbol which represents every day we’ve spent alive on earth. Therefore, how you spend your "dash" is important.
Recently I   36  about a little girl named Hope. After learning more about her life, I couldn’t help but feel it was not by   37  , nor happenstance, that she had been named "Hope".The strong feeling of sympathy and generosity  38  in her young heart made a lasting impression on me and countless others 39   I never had the opportunity to meet her, I wish I had.It seems as though she was wise beyond her tender years and very, very special.
Hope was a twelve-year-old girl who was   40  a "wish" in early December 2010 by the "Make-A-Wish" Foundation after being   41  that she had a rare type of bone cancer. However, when she found out that more than 150   42  in her area were waiting for their wishes to be granted (實(shí)現(xiàn)) , she unselfishly used her wish to   43  that those children have their wishes granted. She also asked tW it be done   44  January 16, 2011.Unfortunately, however, the organization informed her that her   45  request could not be granted as the funds (資金) were simply   46 .They calculated that they would need to raise more than one   47  dollars in thirty days in order to grant her wish. 48 , but not discouraged, she turned her disappointment into an enthusiasm that inspired caring   49  to take up helping grant the wishes of the other children, and eventually   50   as well.Newspaper columnists and reporters for radio and TV stations 51   the story of this caring young girl who had   52  the hearts of so many and as word spread, the community was challenged.Committees were fanned and schools, corporations and various organizations assisted in  53  money to help make Hope’s dream come true.
Her efforts were not in vain as they continue to help others, not only   54  , but spiritually and emotionally as well.At the gathering to celebrate her life, "A Celebration of Hope" on January 16, 2011 , the   55  was made that they had indeed received donations totaling more than one million dollars. Her wish had been granted!

You can not see any object unless light from that object gets into your eyes. Some of the things you see give off light of their own. The sun, the stars, a lighted lamp are examples that can be seen by their own light. Such things are luminous. Most of the things you see are not giving off light of their own. They are simply reflecting light that falls on them from the sun or some other luminous bodies. The moon, for example, does not give off any light of its own. It is non-luminous. You see it because sunlight falls on it and some of it reflects in our direction. So moon light is only second hand sunlight.
When you look at a book, it sends to your eyes some of the light which falls on it, and you see the book. If light could be kept out from where you are so that there would be no light for the book to reflect, then you could not see the book even with your eyes wide open.
Light travels so fast that the time in which it travels from the book you are reading to your eyes is so short as if there were no time at all. Light reaches us from the moon, which is about 380 000 kilometers away, in only a little more than a second.
小題1:You can see the book because_______.
A.your eyes are close to it B.it reflects some of the sunlight
C.it has light of its ownD.your eyesight can get to it

C.The sun and the starsD.The moon and the earth
小題4:Which of the following is true?
A.All the things you can see give off light.
B.Light from the book is much shorter than that from the moon.
C.The moment you open your eyes the light from the book travels to your eyes.

Until recently, I hadn’t done much community service. In face, I did nothing to benefit anyone but myself. My selfishness and laziness were clear before I received an assignment from my teacher. Each student was required to complete 10 hours community service. To me, 10 hours was a huge amount of time to spend helping others.Volunterring, for me, has been a truly life – changing experience.
My mom suggested that I organize a food drive(募捐活動)in our development(新建筑宅區(qū))and donate what I collected to a local shelter.Anything that would help finish the project seemed like a good idea, so I agreed.I made up flyers(傳單)asking for donations and placed flyers at every house in my neighborhood.

When we finally arrived the shelter, I was a little nervous because I had never been there before. The woman in charge was extremely grateful for the donations and said that the world would be ganizing the food drive and delighted that my service to the community would make a difference in people’s lives.
As I was leaving the shelter, a man asked if I was the one who had brought all the food.I shyly nodded, and he said, “A round here, you are a hero.” From that point on, I made myself a promise that I would serve the community more often, even when it was not required.Through this school assignment, I have realized that caring for others is an important part of living and the world would be a completely different place if people all help those who are less fortunate.

Cosmo Books Ltd.,                         14, Woodman Road,
Hertford Estate,                            Two Bridges,
Rickmansworth,                            West Sussex.
Middx.
25th February
Dear sir,
Just over six months ago, I saw an advertisement in the Morning Mail for a set of the complete works of William Shakespeare. Your company, Cosmo books Ltd., offered this set ( eight books of plays and two books of poetry) at what was claimed to be a ‘remarkable’ price: fifteen pounds and fifty pence, including postage and packing. I had wanted a set of Shakespeare’s plays and poems for some time, and these books, in red imitation leather, looked particularly attractive; so I sent for them.
Two weeks later, the books arrived, together with a set of the complete works of Charles Dickens which I had not ordered. So I returned the Dickens books to you, with a cheque for fifteen pounds and fifty pence for the works of Shakespeare. Two more weeks passed. Then there arrived on my door step a second set of the works of Shakespeare, the same set of novels by Dickens and a six book set of the plays of Moliere, in French. Since I do not read French, these were of no use to me at all. However, I could not afford to post all these books back to you, so I wrote to you at the end of August of last year, instructing you to come and collect all the books that I did not want, and asking you not to send any other books until further notice.
You did not reply to that letter. Instead you sent me a bill for forty two pounds , and a set of the plays of Schiller, in German. Since then, a new set of books has arrived every two weeks, the works of Goethe, the poems of Milton, the plays of Strindberg; I hardly know what I have. The books are still all in their boxes, in the garage, and my car has to stand in the rain outside.
I have no room for any more books, and even if I read from now until the Last Judgement, I should not finish reading all the books that you have sent me.
Please send no more books, send no more bills, send no more angry letters demanding payment. Just send one large lorry and take all the books away, leaving me only with the one set of the complete works of Shakespeare for which I have paid.
Yours faithfully,
SIMON WALKER

The emperor penguin is the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species and lives in Antarctica. The male and female are similar in size, reaching 122 cm in height and weighing anywhere from 22 to 45 kg. The back and head are black, contrasting sharply with the pale-yellow breast and bright-yellow ears. Like all penguins, it is flightless, with a streamlined body and their wings stiffen and flatten into flippers(鰭狀肢) for a marine habitat.
Its diet consists primarily of fish, but can also include animals with hard shells. In hunting, the species can remain underwater up to 18 minutes, diving to a depth of 535 m. Its unusually structured hemoglobin(血紅蛋白)allows it to function at low oxygen levels.
The emperor penguin is perhaps best known for the journeys adults make each year in order to mate and to feed their babies. The only penguin species that breeds(繁殖) during the Antarctic winter, it goes on a long journey of 50-120 km over the ice to breeding areas which may include thousands of individuals. The female lays a single egg, which is incubated(孵化)by the male while the female returns to the sea to feed; parents take turns searching for food at sea and caring for their chick. They both care for the chick until it is able to enter the water to find food on its own. During the process of incubation, the male can lose up to 1/3 to 1/2 of his body weight. One of the coolest things about the male is that if the chick comes out its egg before the female returns, the male can actually produce a special liquid to feed the chick. He can only do this for a short time. If the female doesn’t return, he must leave the chick to go on with his own life. The emperor penguin can typically live for 20 years in the wild, although observations suggest that some individual may live to 50 years of age.

科目:高中英語 來源:不詳 題型:閱讀理解

No matter how long your life is, you will, at best, be able to read only a few books of all that have been written, and the few you do read should include the best. You can be pleased with the fact that the number of such is relatively small.
It is to be expected that the selections will change over time. Yet there is a surprising uniformity (一致性) in the lists which represent the best choices of any period. In every age, the list makers include both ancient and modern books in their selections, and they always wonder whether the moderns are up to the great books of the past.
What are the signs by which we may recognize a great book? The four I will mention may not be all there are, but they are the ones I’ve found most useful in explaining my choices over the years.
Great books are probably the most widely read. They are enduring best sellers. Gone with the Wind has had relatively few readers compared to the plays of Shakespeare or Don Quixote. It would be reasonable to estimate that Homer Iliad has been read by at least 25,000,000 people in the last 3000 years.
Great books are popular, not pedantic. They are not written by specialists about specialties for specialists. Whether they are philosophy or science, or history or poetry, they treat of human, not academic problems. They are written for men, not professors. To read a textbook for advanced students, you have to read an elementary textbook first. But the great books can be considered elementary in the sense that they treat the elements of any subject matter. They are not related to one another as a series of textbooks, graded in difficulty or in the technicality of the problems with which they deal.
Great books are always contemporary, the most readable and instructive.
Great books deal with the continuously unsolved problems of human life. There are mysteries in the world that mark the limits of human knowing and thinking. Inquiry not begins with wonder, but usually ends with it also. Great minds acknowledge mysteries only honestly. Wisdom is encouraged, not destroyed, by understanding its limitations.
小題1:Which is not the criterion in the following when considering a great book?
A.Although not a best seller, it must be the most widely read.
B.A great book can be read without any effort.
C.Great books are never out of date.
D.Great books will not disappoint you if you try to read them well.
小題2:According to the author, Gone with the Wind is     .
A.a(chǎn) best sellerB.disliked by readers who like Shakespeare
C.read more often than Don QuixoteD.a(chǎn) great book
小題3:In the passage the underlined word “pedantic” means
A.showing the feelings, esp., those of kindness, which people are supposed to have
B.serving as practical examples
C.being elementary
D.paying too much attention to details in books
小題4:The best title for this passage is        .
A.Great Books in Your LifeB.Great Books in Your Specialty
C.How to Find a Great Book?D.What Is a Great Book?
