Too often young people get themselves employed quite by accident, not knowing whether there will be opportunities for promotion (晉升), happiness and security. As a result, they are employed in doing jobs that afford them little or no satisfaction.
Our school leavers face so much competition that they seldom care what they do as long as they can earn a living. Some stay long at a job and learn to like it; others leave one for another looking for something to suit them. The young graduates leave the university with the dream of looking for jobs that offer a salary up to their expectation.
Very few go out into the world knowing exactly what they want and the limits of their own abilities. The cause behind all this confusion is that there has never been a proper vocational(職業(yè)的) guidance in our educational institutions. Nearly all the graduates feel their way in the dark. Their chief concern is the salary. They never bother to think whether they are suited for the job or, even more important, whether the job suits them. Having a job is more than merely providing one and one’ s dependants with daily bread and some money for leisure and entertainment. It sets a pattern of life and, in many ways, determines a person ’s social status in life and selection of friends, leisure and interest.
In choosing a profession, one should first consider which type of work will suit his or her interest. Nothing is sadder than taking on a job in which one has no interest, for it will not only ruin one’ s talents but also discourage one’ s desire to succeed in life.

In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what "keeping up with the Joneses" is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbors.
The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbors.
It was like a race, but one could never finish this race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They had to move back to an apartment in New York City. Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it "Keeping up with the Joneses” because "Jones" is a very common name in the United States. "Keeping up with the Joneses" came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand's series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.
People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are "Joneses" in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.

I usually doubt about any research that concludes that people are either happier or unhappier or more or less certain of themselves than they were 50 years ago. While any of these statements might be true, they are practically impossible to prove scientifically. Still, 1 was struck by a report which concluded that today’s children are significantly more anxious than children in the 1950s. In fact, the analysis showed, normal children between 9 and 17 have a higher level of anxiety today than children who were treated for mental illness 50 years ago.
Why are America’s kids so stressed? The report cites two main causes: increasing physical isolation (孤獨) brought on by high divorce rates and less involvement in community, and a growing perception that the world is a more dangerous place.
Given that we can’t turn the clock back, adults can still do plenty to help the next generation to cope.
At the top of the list, nurturing (培育) is a better appreciation of the limits of individualism. No child is an island. Strengthening social ties helps build communities and protect individuals against stress.
To help kids build stronger connections with others, you can pull the plug on TVs and computers. Your family will thank you later. They will then have more time for face-to-face relationships, and they will get more sleep.
Limit the amount of virtual (虛擬的) violence your children are exposed to. It’s not just video games and movies; children see a lot of murder and crime on the local news.
Keep your expectations for your children reasonable. Many highly successful people never attended Harvard or Yale.
Make exercise part of your daily routine. It will help you deal with your own anxieties and provide a good model for your kids. Sometimes anxiety is unavoidable, but it doesn’t have to ruin your life.
小題1:What does the author thinks of the conclusion that people in America are unhappier than 50 years ago?

D.It’s impossible to forget the past.
小題3:According to an analysis, compared with normal children today, children 50 years ago __________.
A.were less isolated physically
B.were probably less self-centered
C.probably suffered less from anxiety
D.were considered less individualistic
小題4:What is the first and most important thing parents should do to help their children?
A.To provide them with a safer environment.
B.To lower their expectations for them.
C.To get them more involved socially.
D.To set a good model for them to follow.
小題5:What conclusion can be drawn from the passage?
A.Anxiety, though always unavoidable, can be coped with.

Women love shoes! They will sometimes go to look for the perfect pair of shoes to wear only once with the perfect outfit or the fashion of the day. Once worn, these fashionable designer shoes may spend weeks, months, or years in the closet without being worn again until another special occasion comes up. With that said, are expensive designer shoes really worth their cost?
Historically, shoes were invented to free feet from sharp rocks, hot sands, and blisters. Shoes were made to be simple and functional, with tough leather soles and straps. As society became more sophisticated (復雜的), the role of shoes changed; shoes were made to add status to the wearer.
Shoe designers began to work on the production of fashion shoes for the wealthy; shoes meant more for show than for practical use or simplicity. Good shoemakers became well known and printed symbols on their shoes, so people could recognize the maker of that particular design. Designer shoes were thus born.
Many women develop serious problems with their feet after wearing these designer shoes during the workday and the medical costs for dealing with these problems can get very high. Some popular makers of designer shoes have been working towards combining comfort and practical use into their shoes, but it has been noted that women still go for style, beauty and uniqueness above everything else.
So to answer the question as to whether or not designer shoes are worth the cost, the answer is certainly yes, but be smart and invest in a pair of comfortable, not so stylish shoes for the days when you stay outdoors for hours! They can also be very expensive, but I can surely say that they are worth the cost.
小題1:When shoes were first made, their main use was to _________.

A.explain why expensive designer shoes are worth the money
B.talk about the necessity of owning comfortable shoes
C.warn women of the danger of wearing designer shoes
D.talk about the history and development of shoes

Old age may not sound exciting. But recent findings offer good news for older people and for people worried about getting older.
Researchers found that people become happier and experience less worry after they reach the age of fifty. In fact, they say by the age of eighty-five, people are happier with their life than they were when they were eighteen years old.
The findings came from a survey of more than three hundred forty thousand adults in the United States. The Gallup Organization questioned them by telephone in two thousand eight. At that time, the people were between the ages of eighteen and eighty-five.
The researchers asked questions about emotions like happiness, sadness and worry. They also asked about mental or emotional stress.
Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of twenty-two and twenty-five.
The findings showed that stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties.
Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early seventies. The people least likely to report feeling negative emotions were those in their seventies and eighties.
The study also showed that men and women have similar emotional patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men.
The findings appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Researchers say they do not know why happiness increases as people get older. One theory is that, as people grow older, they grow more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.
Professor Stone says the emotional patterns could be linked to changes in how people see the world, or maybe even changes in brain chemistry.
The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age.
小題1: What is the report about?
A.The relationship between happiness and age.
B.The influence between happiness and unemployment.
C.The tendency between family and health.
D.The expectation between age and children.
小題2:Suppose John is 90 years old and Mike is 24, which of the following is True about them according to the research?
A.John is happier and more energetic than Mike.

D.Mike is more worried and depressed than John.
小題3: One of the possible reasons why the older one gets, the happier one becomes is that _______.
A.they have had enough bad experiences
B.they become more grateful about the things they own
C.they have found it easy to forget their pains and pressures
D.they have lost their ability to control themselves
小題4: Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.Having young children affects the levels of happiness of the old.
B.Emotional patterns can change the physical structures of human’s brains.
C.It’s reported that women at all ages are happier than men.
D.Why happiness increases as people get older is still an unsolved mystery.

Throughout the world, boys and girls prefer to play with different types of toys. Boys typically like to play with cars and trucks, while girls typically choose to play with dolls. Why is this? A traditional sociological explanation is that boys and girls are socialized and encouraged to play with different types of toys by their parents, peers, and the “society”. Growing scientific evidence suggests, however, that boys’ and girls’ toy preferences may have a biological origin.
In 2002, Gerianne M. Alexander of Texas A&M University and Melissa Hines of City University in London surprised the scientific world by showing that monkeys showed the same sex typical toy preferences as humans. In the study, Alexander and Hines gave two masculine toys (a ball and a police car), two feminine toys (a soft doll and a cooking pot), and two neutral toys (a picture book and a stuffed dog) to 44 male and 44 female monkeys. They then assessed the monkeys’ preference for each toy by measuring how much time they spent with each. Their data showed that male monkeys showed significantly greater interest in the masculine toys, and the female monkeys showed significantly greater interest in the feminine toys. The two sexes did not differ in their preference for the neutral toys.
If children’ s toy preferences were largely formed by gender socialization, as traditional sociologists’ claim, in which their parents give “gender appropriate” toys to boys and girls, how can these male and female monkeys have the same preferences as boys and girls? They were never socialized by humans, and they had never seen these toys before in their lives.
小題1:Traditional sociologists believe boys’ and girls’ toy preferences ________
A.are passed down from their parents
B.are largely formed in later life
C.have nothing to do with gender socialization
D.have a biological origin
小題2:The study by Alexander and Hines shows that monkeys________
A.also have a sex typical toy preference
B.also play toys as humans do
C.have no toy preferences
D.like to play different toys at different time
小題3:Alexander and Hines carried out the study to ________
A.find more evidence for traditional sociology
B.test the intelligence of monkeys
C.test whether monkeys like to play toys
D.find out why boys and girls prefer different toys
小題4:According to the study, if given a stuffed dog, _______
A.only the male monkeys showed interest
B.the female monkeys showed more interest
C.the male and female monkeys showed the same interest
D.neither the male nor the female monkeys showed any interest

There is a saying in French—“Si vieillesse pouvait, si jeunesse savait”—which means roughly “if age had the ability, if youth had the knowledge.” I was reminded of this saying the other day when I saw an interview with a distinguished Asian neurosurgeon(神經外科醫(yī)生), now retired, about the impact of computer technology on modern surgery.
He was referring to the difficulty people of his age had in using the new techniques, but also to the fact that younger surgeons, who are more comfortable with the technology, lack some of the wisdom of experience.
It struck me that this problem is not just confined(局限于) to specialized fields such as medicine, but is widespread in modern life. There are many areas where the rapid growth of technology has widened the generation gap.
Young people are at ease with modern technology and propose all sorts of ways for using and developing it. But they often lack the experience needed to see further into the future to the possible dangers that a particular development may cause.
Older people see all sorts of difficulties and dangers, but are sometimes ignored, or even accused of being against progress, if they point out potential problems. Equally, they may see potential uses, but not have the technical skills to put them into practice themselves or the trust in the younger generation to do so.
Enthusiasm and inexperience come into conflict with caution and arrogance, usually with unsatisfactory results for both sides.
What is needed is the development of a partnership, based on mutual respect, which can deliver real progress by combining enthusiasm and caution in a constructive way, rather than in conflict with each other. The old need to give the younger generation the time, the resources and, above all, the authority to develop new ideas and use their skills. In exchange, the young need to turn more actively to the older generation to seek their advice and exploit their greater experience of the world in foreseeing and overcoming potential problems.
小題1:The passage is mainly about ________.
A.the impact of computer technology on modern surgery
B.an interview with a distinguished Asian neurosurgeon
C.new generation gap between the old and the young
D.a conflict between knowledge and experience
小題2:The French saying in the first paragraph is used to ________.
A.introduce the topic
B.show the difference between French and English
C.make readers confused
D.prove the writer’s wisdom
小題3:What did the retired neurosurgeon probably mention in his interview?
A.Old people’s enthusiasm in obtaining new technology.
B.Old people’s difficulty in using computers.
C.Young surgeons’ bad manners in working.
D.Young surgeons’ difficulty in getting experience.
小題4:In the writer’s view, what advantage do the older generation have?
A.They are happy with modern technology.
B.They are easy to learn new techniques.
C.They can foresee the future of the young generation.
D.They are rich in work experience.
小題5:What conclusion can be drawn from the last paragraph?
A.The young and the old should respect and learn from each other.
B.The young should teach the old modern technology.
C.The old should maintain their authority in every field.
D.The young and the old should work independently.

Are you stuck in a rut(車轍)and looking for a change? Fed up of seeing hungry, poor faces on your TV screen and want to do something to help? Perhaps you’ve considered volunteering overseas but ruled it out because you thought you were too old, couldn’t commit enough time, or have a family. If so, think again.
“Over the past five years it has become far safer --- and more professionally acceptable --- to take up a job volunteering overseas,” says David Stitt, managing director of Gap Year for Grown Ups, a company catering for volunteers in their late 20s and upwards. “While 10 years ago intrepid souls took financial and personal risks in volunteering abroad, now several organizations exist to make the experience safe and well-organized.
Nowadays, universities and business encourage overseas volunteering among students and employees. Entire families can volunteer abroad, and agencies are employing more disabled and retired people. A prosperous “humanitarian tourism” industry has sprung up; thousands of UK citizens will do some form of overseas volunteering this year.
“Some volunteering jobs are easier to find than others,” explains Kevin Cusack, from a volunteer advice agency. “If you can speak English, it’s not too hard to land a job teaching English, even without a qualification, and those who enjoy working with children should be able to find child care work.”
Whether your interest is rainforests or women’s rights, you can find a volunteer position to suit you. But be warned: unless you have relevant skills or existing overseas development experience, it’s going to cost. Just how much depends on the location and length of the position, but you should budget for somewhere between £1,500 and £6,000.
“Having to pay to volunteer may sound paradoxical (矛盾的), but it’s the best way to ensure you get a position that benefits the local community while matching your interests and skills,” explains Cusack.  “You can also discuss the time you want to commit to a project --- many positions can fit into a holiday or even a weekend.”
小題1:The underlined words “intrepid souls” in Paragraph 2 most probably refers to ___________.
A.companiesB.volunteersC.fightersD.students
小題2:In Kevin Cusack’s opinion, paying to volunteer overseas ___________.
A.must be incredible and unrealistic
B.can help volunteers learn more about another culture
C.may benefit both volunteers and the community they work in
D.needs confidence, courage and determination
小題3:What can we learn from the text?
A.Disabled people can also take up a job volunteering overseas.
B.In the past no one could take up a job volunteering overseas.
C.“Humanitarian tourism” industry is in its beginning stage.
D.Taking up a job volunteering overseas needs at least £1,500.
小題4:Where can we most probably read this article?
A.In a job guidebook.
B.In a celebrity biography.
C.In a guidebook to work overseas.
D.In a report on volunteer work.
小題5:What is the writer’s attitude towards volunteer work?
A.Critical.B.Unfavorable.C.Supportive.D.Disagreeable.
