A friend of mine named Paul received an expensive car from his brother as a Christmas present. On Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office, a street urchin was walking around the shining car.“Is this your car, Paul?” he asked.
Paul answered, “Yes, my brother gave it to me for Christmas.”The boy was surprised.“You mean your brother gave it to you and it cost you nothing? Boy, I wish…”he hesitated.
Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for.He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the boy said surprised Paul greatly.
“I wish,” the boy went on, “that I could be a brother like that.”Paul looked at the boy ________, then he said again, “Would you like to take a ride in my car?”
“Oh yes, I’d love that.”
After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes shining, said, “Paul, would you mind driving in front of my house?”
Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the boy wanted. He wanted to show his neighbours that he could ride home in a big car.But Paul was wrong again.“Will you stop where those two steps are?” the boy asked.
He ran up to the steps. Then in a short while Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast.He was carrying his little crippled brother. He sat him down on the step and pointed to the car.
“There she is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn’t cost him a cent. And some day I’m going to give you one just like it…then you can see for yourself all the nice things in the Christmas windows that I’ve been trying to tell you about.”
Paul got out and lifted the boy to the front seat of his car.The shining-eyed older brother climbed in beside him and the three of them began an unforgettable holiday ride.

“Can I see my baby?” asked the happy new mother. The bundle(嬰兒包)was placed in her arms and when she moved the fold of cloth to look upon his tiny face, she gasped-the baby has been born without ears.Time, however, proved that the baby's hearing was perfect except his appearance.
One day when he rushed home from school and threw himself into his mother's arms, he cried out bitterly, “A boy, a big boy… called me a f-…freak(怪人).” She sighed, knowing that his life was to be endless of heartbreaks.
He grew up, handsome and popular with his fellow students. He developed a gift for literature and music. But for his misfortune, he might have been class president.
The boy's father had a talk with the family doctor.“Could nothing be done?” “I believe we could graft(移植)on a pair of outer ears, if they could be donated(捐獻(xiàn)),”the doctor decided. So the search began for a person who would make such a sacrifice a young man.Two years went by.Then, “You're going to the hospital, son.Mother and I have someone who will donate the ears you need. But it's a secret,” said the father.
The operation was a brilliant success. His talents blossomed(開花)into genius.School and college became a series of successes.Later he married and entered the diplomatic(外交)service.“But I must know!” he urged his father.“Who gave so much for me? I could never do enough for him.”
“I do not believe you could,” said the father, “but the agreement was that you are not to know….not yet.” The years kept the secret, but the day did come….one of the darkest days that ever pass through a son.He stood with his father over his mother's casket(棺材).Slowly and softly, the father stretched forth a hand and raised the thick, reddish-brown hair to let out the secret.
