Mere is an astonishing and significant fact: Mental work alone can’t make us tired. It sounds absurd. But a few years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human brain could labor without reaching a stage of fatigue (疲勞).To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all! If we took a drop of blood from a day laborer, we would find it full of fatigue toxins (毒素)and fatigue products. But if we took blood from the brain of an Albert Einstein, it would show no fatigue toxins at the end of the day.
So far as the brain is concerned, it can work as well and swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of effort as at the beginning. The brain is totally tireless. So what makes us tired?
Some scientists declare that most of our fatigue comes from our mental and emotional (情感的)attitudes. One of England’s most outstanding scientists, J. A. Hadfield, says, “The greater part of the fatigue from which we suffer is of mental origin. In fact, fatigue of purely physical origin is rare.” Dr. Brill, a famous American scientist, goes even further. He declares, “One hundred percent of the fatigue of a sitting worker in good health is due to emotional problems.”
What kinds of emotions make sitting workers tired? Joy? Satisfaction? No! A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry, a feeling of not being appreciated - those are the emotions that tire sitting workers. Hard work by itself seldom causes fatigue. We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body.
64. What surprised the scientists a few years ago?
A. Fatigue toxins could hardly be found in a laborer’s blood.
B. Albert Einstein didn’t feel worn out after a day’s work.
C. The brain could work for many hours without fatigue.
D. A mental worker’s blood was filled with fatigue toxins.
65. According to the author, which of the following can make sitting workers tired?
A. Challenging mental work.
B. Unpleasant emotions.
C. Endless tasks.
D. Physical labor.
66. What's the author’s attitude towards the scientists’ ideas?
A. He agrees with them.
B. He doubts them.
C. He argues against them.
D. He hesitates to accept them.
67. We can infer from the passage that in order to stay energetic, sitting workers need to _____ .
A. have some good food
B. enjoy their work
C. exercise regularly
D. discover fatigue toxins
(Para. 1) | an astonishing and significant fact;Mental work alone can’t make us tired;sounds absurd | 腦力勞動不會使人勞累:一個令人驚訝又有意義的事實;腦力勞動不會使人覺得勞累;聽起來很荒唐 |
(Para. 2-4) | our mental and emotional attitudes;A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry, a feeling of not being appreciated;produce nervousness in the body.
根據(jù)Mere is an astonishing and significant fact: Mental work alone can’t make us tired.
找到關(guān)鍵詞句can make sitting workers tired,定位末段。根據(jù)A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry, a feeling of not being appreciated - those are the emotions that tire sitting workers(一種厭煩、憤怒、焦急、緊張、憂慮、不被欣賞的感覺,這些是使腦力工作者感到累的情感因素)。
66.A。 Mere is an astonishing and significant fact(Mere是一個令人驚訝又有意義的事實),作者的態(tài)度是驚嘆與贊同的;在末段,作者得出結(jié)論:We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body.(我覺得累是因為我們的感情在體內(nèi)產(chǎn)生了緊張情緒)。
如文中的significant;declare;goes even further等。
67.B。 enjoy their work(享受工作)。
If we took a drop of blood from a day laborer, we would find it full of fatigue toxins (毒素)and fatigue products.
分析:句子的主句是we would find it full of fatigue toxins (毒素)and fatigue products.
full of短語做it的賓語補足語;if引導(dǎo)的從句為條件狀語從句。

An annoying problem for humans, who like to boast (夸耀) about all the distant planets and moons we have explored, is that we've never taken a good look right under our noses. The inside of the earth is relatively close but how can we get there?
The deepest oil well enters a mere six miles into the crust (地殼) (the center of the earth is about 4,000 miles deeper).Russian scientists dug the deepest hole in Siberia," but bottomed out at about 7.5 miles below the surface. The Mohole project, a U.S.plan in the 1950s, called for drilling a hole 25 miles down to the boundary be??tween the hard rocks of the crust and the soft mantle (地幔).Sadly the project involved govern??ment supporting.
It gets harder and harder to drill deep into the earth because rocks get softer and softer. Hard but easily broken at the surface, rocks become plastic at depth, and the pressure caused by the weight of the overlaying crust — about 52,800 pounds per square inch at a depth of ten miles, makes further drilling impossible.
What little we know about the inside of the earth (like the fact that there' s a crust, a mantle, and a core) comes from indirect evidence, such as the analysis of earthquakes.
So maybe it' s time for a thorough new method to explore the earth's inside.Scientist David Stevenson says we should forget about drilling holes.Instead, we should open a crack (裂縫).
Stevenson suggests digging a crack about a half mile long, a yard wide, and a half mile deep (not with a shovel) but with an explosion on the scale of a nuclear bomb.Next, he'd pour a few hundred thousand tons of molten (融化的) iron into the crack, along with a robot. The iron, thicker than the surrounding crust, would move downward at about 16 feet per second, carrying the robot with it and opening the crack deeper and deeper. The iron mass would drop for about a week and 2,000 miles to the outer edge of the earth core, the robot sending out data to the sur??face.
Stevenson compares his idea to space explo??ration."We're going somewhere we haven't been before," he says."In all possibility, there will be surprises."
This idea can probably be put in.the drawer marked with Isn't Going To Happen. The robot would have to survive temperatures that would melt pretty much anything. But Stevenson's idea may inspire a new look at an old problem.Great things can come from what seems like impossible ideas.
Going inside the earth is ________ than going into space.
A.more interesting B.more possible C.easier D.more challenging
How deep have we gone into the earth until now?
A.6 miles. B.4,000 miles. C.7.5 miles. D.25 miles.
Which of the following is TRUE about David Stevenson's idea?
A.It is an inspiring but not practical idea now.
B.It is a practical proposal that has come into use now.
C.It is a good proposal that will soon be put into practice.
D.It is a false theory that cannot be carried out at all.
What might be the most suitable title for the text?
A.An Annoying Problem for Humans
B.To the Center of the Earth
C.The Mohole Project
D.David Stevenson' s Proposal

It is true that a smile means the same thing in any language. So does laughter or crying. There are also a number of clear similarities in the way different animals show the same feeling. Dogs, tigers and humans, for example, often show their teeth when they are angry. This is probably because such behavior patterns are inherited (遺傳) rather than learned.
Fear is another emotion that is shown in much the same way all over the world. In Chinese and in English literature, a phrase like “he went pale and begin to tremble (顫抖)”suggests that the man is either very afraid or he has just got a very big shock. However, “he opened his eyes wide” is used to suggest anger in Chinese whereas in English it means surprise. In Chinese surprise can be described in a phrase like “they stretched out(伸出)their tongues”! Sticking out your tongue in English is an insulting(侮辱)or expresses disgust.
Even in the same culture, people differ in ability to understand and express feelings. Experiments in America have shown that women are usually better than men at recognizing fear, anger, love and happiness on people’s faces. Disgust, contempt (蔑視) and suffering seem to be the most difficult emotions for people everywhere either to recognize or to express. Other studies show that older people usually find it easier to recognize or understand body language than younger people do. And psychologists (心理學(xué)家) such as E.G. Beier have also shown that some people often give the completely impression of how they feel. For example, they try to show love but in fact communicate dislike. Or when they want to show interest, they give the impression that they don’t care. This can happen even among close friends and members of the same family. In other words, what we think we are communicating through language, voice, face and body movements may be the exact opposite of what for people understand.
71.According to the passage, even in different cultures the most easily recognized emotion is .
A.a(chǎn)nger B.dislike C.happiness D.surprise
72.Experiments show that easier understanding of words and gestures has something to do with your .
A.a(chǎn)ge and sex B.love and cultural differences
C.impressions about the speaker D.emotional state
73.When we communicate with people, .
A.we know exactly what they mean while they express their emotions
B.we sometimes misunderstand each other
C.we usually mislead them by expressing the opposite of our feeling
D.it seems much mere difficult to understand body language than language
74.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A.When we communicate our real emotions, we many cause misunderstanding to others.
B.Different people in different cultures may have different ways to understand one gesture.
C.Some people are likely to hide their real feelings and express them in the opposite way.
D.What we say does always mean the same thing as the gestures we make.
75.The underlined word “disgust” in Paragraph 2 probably means “ ” in this passage.
A.strong dislike B.friendliness C.love D.sickness

When students and parents are asked to rate subjects according to their importance, the arts are unavoidably at the bottom of the list. Music is nice, people seem to say, but not important. Too often it is viewed as mere entertainment, but certainly not an education priority(優(yōu)先). This view is shortsighted. In fact, music education is beneficial and important for all students.
Music tells us who we are. Because music is an expression of the beings who create it, it reflects their thinking and values, as well ad the social environment it came influence that George Gershwin and other musicians introduced into their music is obviously American because it came from American musical traditions. Music expresses our character and values. It gives us identity as a society.
Music provides a kind of perception(感知)that cannot be acquired any other way. Science can explain how the sun rises and sets. The arts explore the emotive(情感的)meaning of the same phenomenon. We need every possible way to discover and respond to our world for one simple but powerful reason: No one way can get it all.
The arts are forms of thought as powerful in what they communicate as mathematical and scientific symbols. They are ways we human beings “talk” to each other. They are the language of civilization through which we express our fears, our curiosities, our hungers, our discoveries, our hopes. The arts are ways we give form to our ideas and imagination so that they can be shared with others. When we do not give children access to an important way of expressing themselves such as music, we take away from them the meanings that music expresses.
Science and technology do not tell us what it means to be human. The arts do. Music is an important way we express human suffering, celebration, the meaning and value of peace and love.
So music education is far more necessary than people seem to realize.

Music tells us who we are because music is an expression of the beings who create it, it reflects their thinking and values as well as the social environment it comes from.
