Several weeks ago, kidsPost did a story on “The Art of Video Games” at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The exhibition has created debate with some people saying that as fun as video games are ,they are not works of art. Other people say that videos games may be a new form of art and that they belong to in museums. We asked readers for their opinions on the topic. Here are a few of the letters we received.

A video game is like a painting on a screen. In order to make a video game, you have to think of something original(新穎的)to reach the players. This is the point of Art.

---Mary Pottanat,13

I believe video games are not a form of art. Art should be a visual (視覺的)and creative expression of feelings. Although it is arguable that video games are visual ,they do not express feelings in any way.

---Prannab Kirshnan,12

However exciting video games are, they are not art. Painting is art, but not video games. Art has beauty and culture that no technology could ever compare to. Even though you can create art in some video games, the “ Mona Lisa” wasn’t painted with Nintendo.

---Caroline Kaplan,10

Art is a way of communicating ideas to the public in a way that is fun to them. The “public”, who in this case are kids and adults, are finding these video games from different time periods interesting. Video games would not have been art if it had not been for the kids and adults attracted by “the art of video games”.

---Ryan Puthumana,10

1.Who’s the author?

A. An artist.

B.A video game creator.

C. Someone who works at KidsPost.

D. Someone who works in a museum.

2.Ryan Puthumana holds the view that video games________.

A. aren’t fun enough to be art.

B. are so interesting that they are art.

C. can’t express feelings as well as art.

D. are not so popular with kids as before.

3.We can learn from the text that ______.

A. Caroline Kaplan disagrees with Mary Pottanat.

B. Only one kid thinks video games are similar to art.

C. Prannab Kirshnan doesn’t like playing video games.

D. The older the kids are ,the more they like video games.

4.The text mainly discusses____________.

A. the differences between video games and art.

B. why people like or hate video games.

C. whether video games are art or not.

D. what can be considered works of art.

When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings(缺點(diǎn)). Week by week her list grew: I was very thin, I wasn't a good student, I talked too much, I was too proud, and so on. I tried to hear all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.

He listened to me quietly, then he asked.“Are the things she says true or not? Janet, didn't you ever wonder what you're really like? Well, you now have that girl's opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”

I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn't change (like being very thin), but a good number I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I go to fairly clear picture of myself.

I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it.“That's just for you,” he said.“You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears in anger and feeling hurt. When something said about you is true, you'll find it will be of help to you. Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don't shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.”Daddy's advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I've never had a better piece of advice.

1.What did the father do after he had heard his daughter's complaint?

A.He told her not to pay any attention to what her“enemy”had said.

B.He criticized (批評(píng)) her and told her to overcome her shortcomings.

C.He told her to write down all that her“enemy”had said about her and pay attention only to the things that were true.

D.He refused to take the list and have a look at it.

2.What does “Week by week her list grew” mean?

A.Week by week she discovered more shortcomings of mine and pointed them out to me.

B.She had made a list of my shortcomings and she kept on adding new ones to it so that it was growing longer and longer.

C.I was having more and more shortcomings as time went on.

D.Week by week, my shortcomings grew more serious.

3.Why did her father listen to her quietly?

A.Because he believed that what her daughter's“enemy”said was mostly true.

B.Because he had been so angry with his daughter's shortcomings that he wanted to show this by keeping silent for a while.

C.Because he knew that his daughter would not listen to him at that moment.

D.Because he wasn't quite sure which girl was telling the truth.

4.Which do you think would be the best title for this passage?

A.Not an Enemy, but the Best Friend

B.The Best Advice I've Ever Had

C.My Father

D.My Childhood

The Boy Made It! One Sunday,Nicholas,a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home,a fierce snowstorm swept into the area.Unable to see far,he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it,Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn’t have food, water,a phone,or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute.

Nicholas had no idea where he was.He tried not to panic. He thought about all of the survival shows he had watched on TV.It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.

He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put.The first thing he did was to find shelter from the freezing wind and snow.If he didn’t,his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him.

The next day,Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn’t find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter,he could die that night. On Tuesday,Nicholas went out again to find help.He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in the snow,Nicholas was saved.

Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV.He had often watched Grylls’ survival show ----Man vs.Wild. That’s where he learned the tips that saved his life.In each episode(一期節(jié)目) of Man vs.Wild, Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to find his way out.

A good heart

Dikembe Mutombo grew up in Africa among great poverty and disease. He came to Georgetown University on a scholarship(獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金) to study medicine — but Coach (教練) John Thompson got a look at Dikembe and had a different idea. Dikembe became a star in the NBA, and a citizen of the United States. But he never forgot the land of his birth, or the duty to share his fortune with others. He built a new hospital in his old hometown in the Congo. A friend has said of this good-hearted man: “Mutombo believes that God has given him this chance to do great things.”

Success and kindness

After her daughter was born, Julie Aigner-Clark searched for ways to share her love of music and art with her child. So she borrowed some equipment, and began filming children’s videos (錄象) in her own house. The Baby Einstein Company was born, and in just five years her business grew to more than $20 million in sales. And she is using her success to help others — producing child safety videos with John Walsh of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Julie says of her new program: “I believe it’s the most important thing that I have ever done. I believe that children have the right to live in a world that is safe.”

Bravery and courage

A few weeks ago, Wesley Autrey was waiting at a Harlem subway station with his two little girls when he saw a man fall into the path of a train. With seconds to act, Wesley jumped onto the tracks, pulled the man into the space between the rails (鐵軌), and held him as the train passed right above their heads. He insists he’s not a hero. He says: “We have got to show each other some love.”

1.What was Mutombo praised for?

A. Being a star in the NBA.

B. Being a student of medicine.

C. His work in the church.

D. His willingness to help the needy.

2.Mulombo believes that building the new hospital is___________________.

A. helpful to his personal development

B. something he should do for his homeland

C. a chance for his friends to share his money

D. a way of showing his respect to the NBA

3.What did the Baby Einstein Company do at its beginning?

A. Produce safety equipment for children.

B. Make videos to help protect children.

C. Sell children’s music and artwork.

D. Look for missing and exploited children.

4.Why was Wesley Autrey praised as a hero?
