During a recent Senior Three English lesson, the teacher caught Xiao Li, a female student, busily typing messages on her cell-phone. To the teacher’s surprise, Xiao Li wasn’t just texting her friends the latest gossip. She was actually blogging about what was being taught in the classroom, sharing her opinions about the information and material with her classmates and other students.
The case aroused a heated discussion among teachers and students city-wide. Miss Li, an English teacher from another nearby school said, “I am amazed at how creative the students can be when writing on their blogs. To me it’s a great way for students to improve their writing skills while writing about personal feelings and experiences.” But other teachers are worried that blog-addiction may interfere with their students’ study.
A supporter and classmate of Xiao Li said, “We love her blog! We all read it each day and can’t wait to see what she writes about next. Her interesting stories and great suggestions on study really help to motivate us. And it adds a little fun to our stressful life.” Another student blogger admitted that he often works late into the night, writing his blog and responding to comments posted there. “Sometimes I don’t even have time to finish my homework. I can’t help myself. I really have a lot to say.”

Blogging has become increasingly popular among middle school students. Some view it as a great way to share ideas and motivate students, while others fear it will interfere with students’ study.
There are arguments both for and against student-blogging. On the negative side, if students blog too frequently it may interfere with their study. And if they are completely unsupervised, some inappropriate topics may be discussed. On the other hand, blogging allows students the chance to write about the things that are most important to them. Because they are interested in those topics, they will be more motivated to write, thus practicing their skills. It will also give the blog-readers the chance to practice their reading skills, too. Furthermore, blog-based discussions will help to develop students’ ability to think independently and communicate with others. For these reasons, I am generally a big supporter of student-blogging. Of course, there have to be some limits such as parents monitoring their children to make sure they don’t spend too much time on it and the subjects discussed are suitable.

After my brother died in an accident , my mother was inconsolable(痛苦的,極其傷心的). I was only 4 years old at that time, but I still understood the seismic shift(地震的改變) in my mom’s attitude towards safety. Suddenly, everything around us was potentially dangerous.
I grew up with a lot of restrictions(限制)that were meant to protect me. I couldn’t walk home from school by myself even though everyone I knew already did. I couldn’t attend parties, or go to summer camp, because what if something happened to me. My life was divided into “things you should avoid” and “things you needed to do in order to have a good , long life”.
I became a natural worrier. I worried about things like getting cancert, losing my wallet, car accidents, and earthquakes-disasters big and small, real and imagined.
When I was 14, my mother died suddenly in a car accident. That loss, on top of my brother’s unnatural death, could have paralyzed(癱瘓) me. But at my mom’s funeral, I made a choice. I could either live out the rest of my life trying to be “safe” or I could be brave enough to live out a fulfilling, exciting and, yes, sometimes dangerous life.
I began constantly forcing myself to do the things that frighten or worry me. In fact, I’ve developed a rule for myself: If it scares(使….害怕) me, I have to do it at least once. I’ve done lots of things that my mom would have worried about: I’ve ridden a motorcycle, I’ve dived, I’ve tried rock-climbing, I’ve traveled a lot.
Courage(勇氣,勇敢) isn’t a natural attribute (性格) of human beings. I believe that we have to practice being courageous; using courage is like developing a muscle. The more often I do things that scare me, the more I realize that I can do a lot more than I originally thought I could. I’ve also come to believe that fear can be good thing if we face it.
