I was blind, but I was ashamed of it if it was known. I refused to use a white stick and hated asking for help. After all, I was a teenage girl, and I couldn’t bear people to look at me and think I was not like them. I must have been a terrible danger on the roads. Coming across me wandering through the traffic, motorists probably would have to stop rapidly on their brakes. Apart from that, there were all sorts of disasters that used to occur on the way to and from work.
One evening, I got off the bus about halfway home where I had to change buses, and as usual I ran into something. “I’m awfully sorry,” I said and stepped forward only to run into it again. When it happened a third time, I realized I had been apologizing to a lamppost. This was just one of the stupid things that constantly happened to me. So I carried on and found the bus stop, which was a request stop, where the bus wouldn’t stop unless passengers wanted to get on or off. No one else was there and I had to guess if the bus had arrived.
Generally in this situation, because I hated showing I was blind by asking for help, I tried to guess at the sound. Sometimes I would stop a big lorry and stand there feeling stupid as it drew away. In the end, I usually managed to swallow my pride and ask someone at the stop for help.
But at this particular evening no one joined me at the stop; it seemed that everyone had suddenly decided not to travel by bus. Of course I heard plenty of buses pass, or I thought I did. But because I had given up stopping them for fear of making a fool of myself, I let them all go by. I stood there alone for half an hour without stopping one. Then I gave up. I decided to walk on to the next stop.
1.The girl refused to ask for help because she thought_________.
A. she might be recognized
B. asking for help looked silly
C. she was normal and independent
D. being found blind was embarrassing
2.After the girl got off the bus that evening, she_________.
A. began to run
B. hit a person as usual
C. hit a lamppost by accident
D. was caught by something
3.What was the problem with guessing at the sound to stop a bus?
A. Other vehicles also stopped there.
B. It was unreliable for making judgments.
C. More lorries than buses responded to the girl.
D. It took too much time for the girl to catch the bus.
4.Finally the girl decided to walk to the next stop, hoping__________.
A. to find people there
B. to find more buses there
C. to find the bus by herself there
D. to find people more helpful there

Sports are the base of my life, next to my mother who raised me when my dad left us.I have been into sports since I was six years old. I have known many coaches and heard hundreds of their tips, but they usually focused on drills to develop my skills and reach the next level of play.
When I was in Senior Two, I met the new school basketball coach, Brian Pawloski.I thought I was certain to be selected for the school team since I had been in it the year before.I showed up to the tryouts and put out about 90% effort since I thought I’d make it with no problem. That was a big mistake.
Brian Pawloski is the hardest-working coach I have ever met.He didn’t expect 100% effort, he expected 200% effort. One example: he once made us do 40 suicide drills for the 40 lay-ups (投籃) we missed in a game. Some think this is crazy, but it isn’t.After this conditioning practice, as we were getting a cup of cold water to drink, I said, “coach, that was the best practice I ever had.” I was completely sincere. This man was and is the person who influenced me most at my high school. He expects us to be excellent not just on the court but in the classroom. If I am not working on basketball, I am reading a book that he thinks will help us better understand life’s challenges, including Wooden, Coach, and The Screwtape Letters.
In the first two years I slacked off, not putting forth my full potential. Now, unlike the coaches of my youth, this man was interested in how he did off the court. He always made sure I kept up with my studies and was able to be trusted. I can honestly say that no other coach has given me so much advice on how to succeed in basketball, but more importantly, in life.My school is lucky to have such a great person to teach, coach and influence their students.I will always remember my high-school basketball days as one of the hardest times I have ever worked in my life not only in basketball but in my growth as an individual.
1.Different from other coaches, Coach Brian ________.
A. concentrated on skill training
B. trained the team to the edge of death
C. expected the team to do well in their studies
D. asked the team to do more reading than training
2.The underlined phrase “slacked off” in the last paragraph probably means ________.
A. paid no attention
B. showed no interest
C. had less passion
D. made less effort
3.In the author’s eye, Coach Brian is ________.
A. strict and helpful
B. hardworking and honest
C. skilled and cruel
D. professional and serious

Worry problems are everywhere in our daily life. How to solve them? The answer is that we must equip ourselves to deal with different kinds of worries by learning the three basic steps of problem analysis. The three steps are:
Get the facts
Why is it so important to get the facts? Unless you have the facts, you can’t possibly attempt to solve your problem intelligently.Without the facts, all you can do is wondering around in confusion. It is not an easy job to get facts. When you are worried, your emotions are riding high.__1.__.
When trying to get the facts, you can pretend that you are collecting this information not for yourself but for some other person.__2.__You can also pretend that you are a lawyer preparing to agree.Try to get all the facts both on your side and the other side of the case. You will generally find the truth lies somewhere in between.
__3.__
Whenever you are worried, write down the questions that make you worry. And write out all the various steps you could take and then the probable consequences of each step. For example, what am I worrying about? What can I do about it? Here is what I’m going to do about it.After carefully weighing all the facts, you can calmly come to a decision.
Act on that decision.
__4.__ How can you break the worry habit before it breaks you? Crowd worry out of your mind by keeping busy.Plenty of action is one of the best ways to cure worry.__5.__ If you know a situation is beyond your power, say to yourself: “ It is so; it can’t be otherwise.” Don’t permit little things to ruin your happiness.Try to cultivate a mental attitude that will bring you peace and happiness.
A. Accept what can’t be avoided.
B. Analyze the facts.
C. There comes a time when you must decide and never look back.
D. But here are two ideas that can help you see the facts in a clear and objective way.
E. Unless you take your action, all your face-finding and analysis is a sheer waste of energy.
F. Decide how much anxiety a thing may be worth.
G. This will help you to take a cold and fair view of the evidence.
