Are you a procrastinator?
Following a schedule and doing things on
time is extremely important in today’s busy world.
Unfortunately, not everyone is good at
doing this. Many people are procrastinators; they put off
doing things that they need to until it’s
too late.
We all put off doing things at times.
Statistics show that 90% of university students will often put off studying for
a test or writing an important paper the night before, 25% of university
students put off almost everything all the time. This more serious form of
procrastination can result in a student dropping out of school. Students who
put off doing their assignments once in a while get further and further behind
in their studies. Before long, they feel completely helpless. For the chronic(長期的)procrastinator, often the
only way to solve this problem is to quit school.
According to recent studies, there are
three main reasons that students put off doing things. First, many have poor
time-management skills and often try to do too much in too little time. In the
end, these students often feel helpless and will put off doing many things they
need to. Another reason why students put off doing things is that they feel a
subject is boring and have something because they don’t like it. a third reason
why many students put off doing things is that they often worry that their work
will never be as good as it should be and fear failure of any kind, which,
unfortunately , can often cause these students to put off doing any work at
all.
Do you recognize any of these signs in
yourself? If so, you may want to do something about your tendency towards
procrastination. The following five tips may be helpful.
First, list the things in life that are
important to you, and then list the reasons why you are at school or
university. Look at the two lists and see where they match. Is there something
you need to do in order to achieve a life goal?
Second, chose realistic goals for yourself;
don’t try to do more than you can.
Third, once you have identified our goals,
list them and ask yourself “Which should I do first?” As you become more aware
of what you need to do and when you need to do it, you will feel more in
control and will be able to complete tasks on time.
Fourth, manage your time wisely. Create a
schedule that allows adequate time for accomplishing a goal; for example, your
schedule should give you enough time to study for and pass a test, as well as
time to relax.
Finally, when you accomplish a goal, do
something good for yourself as a reward.
If you believe that you are a chronic
procrastinator, you should try to get help before it is too late. Talk to a
professional, and discuss the problem. If you are a mild procrastinator, make
sure to keep yourself motivated, but don’t worry too much. Remember-we all put
off doing things at times.

Growing up, one year on
It’s been a year since the Wenchuan
earthquake, which left many dead and many more upset and scared. As the quake
areas are now being rebuilt, do students feel better, and what are their lives
like? Teens have talked to two students to find out.
Wu Xinnan, 16,
Dujiangyan Foreign Language Experimental
School
Wu likes leaning through the window of her
makeshift dorm (臨時湊合的宿舍) and looking outside. There, some buildings are under construction
– Her school's new classrooms. Teachers say that they will move in next term
and Wu can't wait for that day to come. Three months after the earthquake, Wu
entered her new school without a formal entrance exam (入學考試). She couldn't concentrate
in class at first. Some of her classmates, especially those who had lost family
members, didn't talk and always stayed alone. One year later, things are much
better.
Everyone seems to work extremely hard, with
busy classes between 6:30 am and 10:00 pm every day. Wu won't allow herself to
fall behind, either. She only goes back to stay with her parents on Saturdays.
They are still staying in a temporary room after losing their house. She never
asks for pocket money since her dad lost his job at a restaurant – another
victim of the earthquake. "I rarely buy anything," she said.
Luo Qin, 16,
Mianyang Shuidian School
Luo has a motto: "Take time to enjoy
life". That’s why she was seen everywhere during her school's recent
speech contest and sports meeting remembering the one-year anniversary (周年紀念) of the earthquake. During
the May Day holiday, Luo and her friends volunteered to help pick tea for
Beichuan farmers in mountainous areas. This year has seen a rise in the tea
grown, but not enough people to work on the farms. Many families are busy
building their new homes.
Luo said she used to be rebellious (叛逆的), but the earthquake matured
(使成熟) her and
taught her to care for others. Once a month she goes back home with a little
gift for her grandma. "She was scared during the earthquake. I always tell
her that she must enjoy a long life after the disaster."

Hey! It's going to be Mother's day again.
Have you planned something good for your Mama? If not, try even one of these
tips.
Make Your Mama Proud
What
special talents do you have? Maybe this is the right time to show it to her.
She would be very proud and surprised if she'd realized that you have something
that she doesn't expect.
What's
Her Favorite?
Most teens don't know what their
mama's favorite. You do? Then, what are you waiting for ? Buy her some of her
favorite stuff and put a little twist on it. Make it more special.
The
best time to give her that is while she is sleeping at night. Put it on the
drawer next to her so that when she wakes up she'll be surprised to see it.
And, maybe, a little tear may fall down from her cheeks.
The
Memories
Our
mothers have special memories in mind. Those are the times that they gave birth
to their healthy baby. How about you? What's your best moment with her? Maybe
you can tell her about the time she got mad at you because you did something
that you thought is right but since that day forward you realized your
mistakes. Or, you can tell her how happy you are when she was there during your
painful days in your life.
Be
Her
What
does she look like if she is so exhausted and angry and tired? What does she do
for your family? This is the right time to show her the things that she usually
does at home. Try to imitate her voice when she is angry. Make your face as if
you are her when she is mad.
Treat
a Queen
Your
house is a palace with a king and queen (it doesn't matter if you're rich or
poor). Our mother is the real queen in our life and in our family though her
duties make her look like she is not. Give the lady a day off by being a
servant to her.
Make-Over
Beauty
Because
of stress and the problems that she is facing right now, especially in the
family, she doesn't look great any more. Admit it! Most mothers are not into
trends anymore because their focusing on us.
Perhaps
you could take some of your savings to treat her in a salon or the department
store. Then, choose nice clothes that would make her look GLAMOROUS!
Have
Some of Your Time
It's
the cheapest but a meaningful way. Most of us are busy from our work, friends,
boy/girl friends, school. We stay home late and after several hours, we go out
again.
Have
you ever had a meaningful time with your mother where you don't think or talk
about problems and arguments? Have you ever told her how much you thank her
from the life she gave to you, the time she took care of you, and for every
suffering she'd felt for you? Have you ever told her that you love her?
Life is short. We don't know what will
happen tomorrow nor today. Those three words can make her heart jump for joy,

A technical secondary school in Nanjing,
east China’s Jiangsu province, planned to order Korean-style school uniforms
for students, but parents opposed the move, believing that the new uniforms
looked too good and would encourage early romances among the students, the
Jinling Evening Paper reported Monday.
Parents
“My daughter was so excited about the
Korean-style uniform, saying it’s her dream to wear mini-skirt to school every
day,” a mom surnamed Cheng complained. “My daughter also called her classmates
to talk about how handsome the boys looked in the uniform!”
Cheng looked on the Internet and found that
most Korean schoolboy uniforms are similar to western suits. “They are so
handsome! My daughter is a fan of Korean fashion, that’s why she is crazy about
the uniform!” Cheng said. “If the students wear such beautiful uniforms, how
can they study well? I prefer the sports wear which makes me think of health
and positive thinking.”
School
“The plan to change the current school
uniform from sports wear has been cancelled,” an employee of the school told
the Jinling Evening Paper.
“The students dislike the current uniform,
so the school took advice from the students last November, knowing that most of
students prefer Korean-or Japanese-style school uniforms. We know cities like
Shanghai and Guangzhou have changed their sports wear school uniforms to more
fashionable uniforms,” an employee surnamed Lin said.
“However, we had to stop the plan because
many parents are strongly against it. Some parents think it’s just a way for
the school to make money, and others think the new uniforms will take students’
attention away from their studies,” Lin said.
When asked about the possibility of
problems with early romance between students because of the more fashionable
uniforms, Lin said he hadn’t considered it. He, however, agreed that the
Korean-style uniform makes the students more charming.
Students
The students are very disappointed about
the school’s final decision. They think the sports wear uniforms make them look
androgynous (難分性別).
They said the Korean-style uniform has many
advantages such as raising interest in class; lifting confidence; improving
solidarity and creating good temperaments.
As for concerns about romance, the students
believe that love is love and bears no relationship to the uniform.
Education department
“We don’t have a unified (統(tǒng)一的) standard for school
uniforms. The schools can choose their own styles. Either sports wear or
uniforms are ok,” an official from the Nanjing Bureau of Education said.
