Treasure hunts (尋寶) have excited people’s imagination for hundreds of years both in real life and in books such as Robert Louis Stevenson't Treasure IslanDKit Williams, a modern writer, had the idea of combining the real excitement of a treasure hunt with clues (線索) found in a book when he wrote a children’s story, Masquerade,  in 1979. The book was about a hare, and a month before it came out Williams buried a gold hare in a park in Bedfordshire. The book contained a large number of clues to help readers find the hare, but Williams put in a lot of “red herrings”, or false clues, to mislead them.

Ken Roberts, the man who found the hare, had been looking for it for nearly two years. Although he had been searching in the wrong area most of the time, he found it by logic (邏輯), not by luck.  His success came from the fact that he had gained an important clue at the start. He had realized that the words: “One of Six to Eight” under the first picture in the book connected the hare in some way to Katherine of Aragon, the first of Henry ’s six wives. Even here, however, Williams had succeeded in misleading him. Ken knew that Katherine of Aragon had died at Kimbolton in Cambridgeshire in 1536 and thought that Williams had buried the hare there. He had been digging there for over a year be fore a new idea occurred to him.  He found out that Kit Williams had spent his childhood near Ampthill, in Bedfordshire, and thought that he must have buried the hare in a place he knew well, but he still could not see the connection with Katherine of Aragon, until one day he came across two stone crossed in Ampthill Park and learnt that they had been built in her honor in 1773.

Even then his search had not come to an enDIt was only after he had spent several nights digging around the cross that he decided to write to Kit Williams to find out if he was wasting his time there. Williams encouraged him to contin ue, and on February 24th 1982, he found the reassure, It was worth 3 000 in the beginning, but the excitement it had caused since its burial made it much more valuable.

答案:1D2C3B4C5B
解析:

1.英文里代詞所起的關(guān)聯(lián)作用十分重要,2002年閱讀理解部分出了兩道這樣的題,絕非隨意之舉。找到畫線處的them,然后將上文(...book contained...clues to help readers...Williams put in a Iot of“red herrings”)中出現(xiàn)的復(fù)數(shù)名詞逐一比較,最重要的線索為them之前的動(dòng)詞 mislead(=to give false or confusing information to),  由其語(yǔ)義可以斷定,其后為“人”而非“物”——答案為D項(xiàng), readers(of...)。

His success came from the fact that he had gained an important clue at the start...而后聯(lián)系到“One of Six to Eight”——也就是Katherine of Aragon。

3.首先找到stone crosses在文中的位置:第二段結(jié)尾(...still could not see the connection with Katherine of Aragon, until one day he came across two stone crosses...and learnt that they had been built in her honor in1773),其中,in her honor是回答本題的關(guān)鍵信息,指的就是to show respect for Henry Ⅷ’s first wife(=Katherine of Aragon)。

4.這類細(xì)節(jié)排序問(wèn)題的答題也有一定技巧:首先比較A、B、C、D四個(gè)選項(xiàng)中排序的異同,確認(rèn)開頭兩項(xiàng)為a、b,d、b,a、d還是b、a。從短文中確認(rèn)a(Henry Ⅷ’s six wives;來(lái)自“one of six to Eight”)在前;縮小范圍看第二步,比較b,d,應(yīng)該是d(=Kathe rine of Aragon=first of Henry Ⅷ’s six wives);至此答案為C項(xiàng): a,d,b,c,e?

Three Yale University professors agreed in a discussion that the automobile was what one of them called“Public Health Enemy No. 1 in this country.”Besides polluting the air and overcrowding the cities, cars are involved in more than half the disastrous accidents, and they contribute to heart disease“because we don't walk anywhere anymore”, said Dr. H. Richard Weinerman, professor of medicine and public health.

Speaking of many of these man-made dangers to the automobile, Arthur W. Galston, professor of biology, said it was possible to make a kerosene-burning turbine car that would“l(fā)essen smog by a very large factor.”But he expressed doubt whether Americans were willing to give up moving about the countryside at 90 miles an hour in a large vehicle.“America seems wedded to the motor car--every family has to have at least two, and one has to be a convertible (敞篷汽車) with 300 horsepower,”Professor Galston continued.“Is this the way of life that we choose because we treasure these values?”

For Professor Sears, part of the blame lies with“a society that regards profit (贏利) as a supreme value, under the illusion that anything that's technically possible is, therefore, morally justified”. Professor Sears also called the country's dependence on its modern automobiles“terrible economics”because of the large horsepower used simply“moving one individual to work.”But he admitted that Americans have painted themselves into a corner by allowing the national economy to become so dependent on the automobile industry.

“The solution”, Dr. Weinerman said,“is not to find a less dangerous fuel but a different system of inner-city transportation. Because of the increasing use of cars, public transportation has been allowed to wither (衰弱) and grow worse, so that if you can't walk to where you want to go, you have to have a car in most cities,”he declared. This, in turn, Dr. Weinerman contended, is responsible for the“arteriosclerosis”(動(dòng)脈硬化) of public roads, for the pollution of the inner city and for the middle-class movement to the suburbs.
