If I were writing a history of my family, some of the darkest moments recorded would be those surrounding Christmas trees. One would certainly think otherwise;selecting and puRing up our trees have always been filled with risk. For example, one afternoon dangerously close to Christmas Eve my mother bought what she thought to be a bargain,a glorious tree that was so full and tall that we could hardly get it into the house.Once we did,my father immediately realized that we would have to hire a carpenter to build a stand for it.Another December perhaps the very next one,we bought a tree earlier than we ever had before. We were happy with its shape and delighted that its size was manageable. We easily placed it in a stand, decorated it from top to bottom, and then self satisfiedly sat back by the fire in its soft light. Two or three days passed and the truth could not be hidden;we had bought a tree cut so long ago that its needles were coming off. There was nothing to do but undecorate it,take it down, and begin tree shopping again. Our most recent Christmas tree offered still another difficult task. When we brought it home, once again it seemed larger than it was in the great outdoors.I persuaded two young neighbors to stop playing basketball and to help us get the tree into the house and set it correctly in the stand.Unfortunately,no one noticed the mud on our helpers’shoes,so only after removing several reddish brown spots from the carpet were we able to discuss the question of where the lights and ornaments(裝飾)were stored.Perhaps those who cut their own trees have tales more painful than these.I don’t care to hear them,as my family’s experiences are enough to cause me to make the following suggestion:”Let’s forget the tree next Christmas.Let’s simply hang some flowers on the front door and over the mirror in the hall.”

The darkest moments in the writer’s family were with the fact that ______.

A.the family bought big Christmas trees

B.they had problems decorating their Christmas trees

C.they had problems picking suitable Christmas trees

D.they had problems finding carpenters for putting up Christmas trees

We can learn from the passage that the writer would like to ______.

       A.forget about Christmas stories

B.get the neighbors to put up their trees

C.buy a better tree to celebrate Christmas

D.make other decorations rather than Christmas trees

When the writer said”my mother bought what she thought to be a bargain”,he means____.

A.she bought the tree at a low price

B.she didn’t really want to buy it

C.she had to bargain hard with the salesman

       D.she couldn’t afford a more expensive one

Which of the following can be the best title for the passage ?

A.How to Select a Christmas Tree         B.No More Christmas Trees for Us

C.Dark Moments of Life                 D.Christmas Without Trees

A priest(牧師) had a cat that climbed up a tree in his backyard and then was afraid to come down. The priest persuaded, offered warm milk, et The kitty would not come down. The tree was not strong enough to climb, so the priest decided that if he tied a rope to his car and drove away so that the tree bent down, he could then reach up and get the kitty. He did so, checking his progress in the car frequently, then figured if he went just a little bit further, the tree would be bent enough for him to reach the kitty. But as he moved a little further forward, the rope broke.
The tree went “boing!” and the kitty at once sailed through the air —out of sight. The priest felt terrible. He walked all over the neighborhood asking people if they’d seen his kitty. Nobody had seen a lost kitty.
So, he prayed, “God, I just give this kitty to your keeping,” and went on about his business.
Several days later he was at the grocery store, meeting one of his church members. He happened to look into her shopping cart and was amazed to see cat food. Now this woman was a cat hater and everyone knew it, so he asked her, “Why are you buying cat food when you hate cats so much?”
She replied, “You won’t believe this,” and told him how her little girl had been begging her for a cat, but she kept refusing. Then a few days before, the child begged again, so the Mom finally told her little girl, “Well, if God gives you a cat, you can keep it.” She told the priest, “I watched my child go out in the yard, get on her knees, and ask God for a cat. I love camping. It’s my favourite way to spent the summer vacation.  Last year, my family and I went camping in the countryside. It was one of the most excited experiences I had never had. We slept in a tent and went on a long walk every day. We cook over a fire and the food always tasted wonderfully. For a whole week, I saw lovely mountain views or breathed fresh air. At night, I heard the gentle wind blowing in the tree, and I felt so peaceful.  It doesn’t cost many to camp, and what I believe it’s the best way to get close nature and enjoy its beauty.

Redwood trees are the tallest plants on the earth, reaching heights of up to 100 metersThey are also known for their longevity, typically 500 to 1000 yearsbut sometimes more than 2000 yearsA hundred million years ago,in the age of dinosaurs, redwoods were common in the forests of a much more moist and tropical North AmericaAs the climate became drier and colder, they declined to a narrow strip along the Pacific coast of Northern Califomia

The trunk of redwood trees is very strong and usually forms a single straight columnIt is covered with a soft barkThis bark can be pretty thick, well over two feet in the more mature treesIt gives the older trees a certain kind of protection from insects, but the main benefit is that it keeps the center of the tree harmless from moderate forest fires because of its thicknessThis fire resistant quality explains why the giant redwood grows to live that longWhile most other types of trees are destroyed by forest firesthe giant redwood actually prospers because of them

Moderate fires will clear the ground of competing plant life, and the rising heat dries and opens the ripe fruit of the redwood, releasing many thousands of seeds onto the ground below

??? New trees are often produced from shoots, little baby trees, which form at the base of the trunkThese shoots grow slowly, fed by the root system of the “mother’’ treeWhen the main tree diesthe shoots are then free to grow as full trees, forming a “fairy ring” of trees around the original treeThese trees,in turn, may give rise to more shoots, and the cycle continues

1.Why were redwood trees easier to find in the forests of North America millions of years ago?

AThe trees were taller and stronger

BThe soil was softer for seeds to develop

AIt allows redwood trees to bear seeds

BIt prevents redwood trees from attack by insects

CIt helps redwood trees absorb water in the air

DIt makes redwood trees more beautiful and appealing

3.Why do redwood trees grow to live that long according to the passage?

AThey have heavy and straight tree trunks

BThey are properly watered and catered to

CThey are more resistant to fire damage than other trees

DThey produce many young trees to maintain their life cycle
