Grandma Moses is among the most famous twentieth-century painters of the United States. 1 .As she once said of herself:“I would never sit back in a rocking chair, waiting for someone to help me.”

2 .At twelve she left home and was in service until at twenty-seven, she married Thomas Moses, the tenant(房客)of hers. They farmed most of their lives. She had ten children, of whom five survived; her husband died in 1927.

Grandma Moses painted a little as a child and 3 , but only changed to oils in old age because her hands had become too stiff(僵直的)to sew and she wanted to keep busy and pass the time. Her pictures were first sold at an exhibition, 4 ,who bought everything she painted. 5 , and in 1940 she had her first exhibition in New York.Between the 1930’s and her death she produced some 2, 000 pictures, which were careful and lively pictures of the country life she had known, with a wonderful sense of color and form.

1.C-d Yet she had only just begun painting in her late seventies

2.B-e She was born on a farm in New York State

  3.E-a made embroidery(刺繡)pictures as a hobby

4.D-b which were soon noticed by a businessman

5.A-c Three of the pictures were shown in the Museum of Modern Art

  第一空白處要求把上文的among the most famous和yet結(jié)合起來。

They farmed most of their lives.

很容易看出made embroidery(刺繡)pictures與painted a little并列。從her hands had become too stiff(僵直的)to sew推出上文,與sew有關(guān)的活兒應(yīng)該是心靈手巧的make embroidery(刺繡)pictures.a(chǎn)s a hobby,作為一個愛好。

which were soon noticed是非限制性定語從句,也是被動語態(tài),在右邊選by a businessman。

第五空白處要從and in 1940 she had her first exhibition in New York. in the Museum of Modern Art和in New York相比后者大。 Three of the pictures were shown in the Museum of Modern Art。

Tristan da Cunha, a 38-square-mile island, is the farthest inhabited island in the world, according to the ?Guinness Book of Records. It is 1510 miles southwest of its nearest neighbor, St.Helena, and 1950 miles west of Africa.Discovered by the Portuguese admiral(葡萄牙海軍將)of the same name in 1506, and settled in 1810, the island belongs to Great Britain and has a population of a few hundred.

Coming in a close second-and often wrongly mentioned as the most distant land-is Easter Island, which lies 1260 miles east of its nearest neighbor, Pitcaim Island, and 2300 miles west of South America.

The mountainous 64-square-mile island was settled around the 5th century, supposedly by people who were lost at sea. They had no connection with the outside world for more than a thousand years, giving them plenty of time to build more than 1000 huge stone figures, called moat, for which the island is most famous.

On Easter Sunday, 1722, however, settlers from Holland moved in and gave the island its name.Today,2000 people live on the Chilean territory(智利領(lǐng)土).They share one street, a small airport, and a few hours of television per day.

Venice’s Carnival

Venice, a small, waterside city in northeast Italy, boils with happiness and excitement once every year.Between February 21 and March 4,carnival(狂歡節(jié))hits the streets. For most people, carnival means large parties and feasts(盛宴).But in Venice, it also means traditional masks(面具)and costumes(服裝).These costumes originally(最初地)meant to hide personal identities(身份).Different social classes could mix in a sea of happiness.Along the waterways, people greeted each other with:“Good morning, Mrs.Mask.”

Today, people in Venice still dress up in the strangest ways-as armed soldiers, butchers, fishermen and so on.Bars and cafés are filled with party-goers who come to show off their fancy(奇異的)costumes.Their designs and creations are made by special studios.Ready-made costumes are not acceptable.“In the months before the carnival we work overtime to meet the demand,” said a mask maker.“Many kilometres of silk and lace(花邊)are made into costumes. For shopkeepers, carnival is the best time of the year.”

The Venice carnival dates back to the Middle Ages.At that time, the city was one of the wealthiest cities in Europe. The tradition of celebrating with masks and costumes is thought to have been started by the “Stocking Companies”.These were groups of young men who organized parties and festivals and wore colourful stockings to distinguish(區(qū)分)themselves.

By the 18th century, the carnival had reached its peak(高潮).It all came to an end when Napoleon conquered(攻取)Venice in 1797.

Now the Venice carnival attracts huge crowds from all over the world. This year, about 700 000 people were taking part.Hotels were fully booked in advance, and bars and restaurants overflowed(爆滿)every day.

The city certainly benefits(得益).A whole industry has been built up around the carnival’s masks and costumes.“The Venice carnival is a magical(迷人的)time! It’s such a great experience,” said one French tourist.

Question:

Say something about Venice’s carnival in your own words.
