A Love Note To My Mom
When I was a little girl, I would often accompany you as you modeled for fashion photographers. It was years later that I finally understood what role modelling  36 in your life. Little did I know you were  37 every penny you earned to go to  38  school.
I cannot thank you enough for  39 you told me one autumn afternoon when I was nine. After finishing my homework, I went into the dining room where you were buried  40  piles of law books. I was  41  .Why were you doing what I do—memorizing textbooks and studying for  42  ? When you said you were in law school, I was more puzzled. I didn’t know. Moms could be lawyers too. You smiled and said, “In life, you can do anything you want to do.”
As young as I was, that statement kept  43 in my ears. I watched as you faced the  44 of completing your studies, starting companies with Dad, while still being a  45 and a Mom with five kids. I was exhausted just watching you in action. With your words of wisdom in my youthful mind, I suddenly felt unlimited freedom to dream. My whole world  46 . I set out to live my life filled with        47  , seeing endless possibilities for personal and professional achievements.
Your words became my motto. I constantly found myself in the unique position of being either the first (woman doctor in Maryland Rotary) or one of the few women (chief medical reporters) in my field. I gained strength every time I said , “Yes, I’ll try that.”
Encouraged by your  48 , I have forged ahead (毅然前行) with my life’s journey, less afraid to make mistakes, and  49 meeting each challenge. You did it, and now I’m  50 it. So, get to run. So much to do, so many dreams to live.

由空前的what role可知此處應(yīng)用動詞played與之搭配,構(gòu)成短語play a role in,含義是“起作用,扮演角色”。故選B項。
【小題1】A save“節(jié)省”;make“掙得,制作”;donate“捐贈”;receive“收到,得到”。 故選A項。
【小題1】C 由第二段第22個空后的you were in law school可知,此處應(yīng)用law表示“上法律學(xué)!。故選C項。
【小題1】A what與which是代詞,在句子中作主語、賓語或表語;that引導(dǎo)賓語從句時,不作任何成分;where是副詞,在從句中作狀語。由于本句中told me后缺少直接賓語,所以排除B項和D項。which多用于有選擇范圍的時候,因此此處應(yīng)用what表示“我非常感謝你在我九歲那年的一個秋天的下午和我說的那番話。”故選A項。
【小題1】C 由下面的問句以及第22個空后的I was more puzzled可知此處應(yīng)用puzzled表示作者的困惑。amused“愉快的,開心的”;worried “擔(dān)心的”;puzzled“迷惑的”;disappointed“失望的”。
Why were you doing what I do—memorizing textbooks and studying可知,作者的媽媽正和小時候的作者一樣,為考試而背課本和學(xué)習(xí)。
【小題1】A ring“回響”,常與in one s ears搭配,表示“在耳邊響起”;blow“吹”;fall“摔倒,跌落”;beat“擊敗,擊打”。根據(jù)空后的in my ears可知ringing為最佳答案。
【小題1】B in danger“處于危險中”;in action“在積極活動中,在運(yùn)轉(zhuǎn)中”;in trouble“處于困境”;in charge“負(fù)責(zé),掌管”。
【小題1】D come back“回來”;close down“停業(yè),關(guān)閉”;go by“(時間)過去,經(jīng)過”;open up“開啟,開創(chuàng)”。
【小題1】A 由下文的seeing endless possibilities for personal and professional achievements可知此處應(yīng)用hope表示“作者滿懷希望去生活”。故選A項。
【小題1】A 由上文的You did it. 故選A項。

John Blanchard was studying the crowd making their way through the station. He was looking for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn’t, the girl with the rose.
When reading a book in a Florida library a year before, John became interested not in the contents of the book, but in the notes penciled in the margin((空白處). The handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and beautiful mind. He discovered the former owner’s name in the front of the book: Miss Hollis Maynell.
He located her address and wrote a letter introducing himself. The next day he was shipped overseas to serve in the army. During the next year, they grew to know each other through the mail and their friendship developed. John requested a photograph, but she refused, saying if he really cared, it wouldn’t matter what
she looked like. When the day finally came for him to return home, their first meeting was suggested-7:00 p.m. at the Grand Central Station in New York.
She wrote, “You’ll recognize me by the red rose I wear on my coat.” So now John was in the station to meet the girl with a rose.
As a pretty and slim girl in green came over, John noticed her blue eyes like flowers in spring. He walked directly towards her, entirely forgetting she was not wearing a rose. As John came closer to her, he saw another woman with a red rose stood nearby. Well past 40, this woman had graying hair done under a worn hat. Seeing the girl in green walk quickly away, John felt as if he were split(劈開) in two. He desired to follow that girl, but longed for the woman whose spirit had truly companioned and supported him.
The woman looked gentle and sensible. John went to her, saying, “I’m Captain John Blanchard. You must be Miss Maynell. I am glad to meet you here. May I take you to dinner?”
She replied with a smile, “I don’t know what this is about. But the lady in green who just went by, begged me to wear this rose on my coat. She said if you asked me out to dinner, I’d tell you she is waiting for you in the big restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of test!”

Electric ears are dirty. In fact, not only are they dirty, they might even be more dirty than their gasoline-powered cousins.
People in California love to talk about "zero-emissions vehicles", but people in California seem to be clueless about where electricity comes from. Power plants mostly use fire to make it. Aside from the new folks who have their roofs covered with solar cells, we get our electricity from generators. Generators are fueled by something---usually coal, oil,but also by heat generated in nuclear power plants. There are a few wind farms and geothermal plants as well, but by far we get electricity mainly by burning something.
In other words, those "zero-emissions" cars are likely coal-burning cars. It's just because the coal is burned somewhere else that it looks clean. It is not. It's as if the California Greens are. covering their eyes---"If I can't see it, it's not happening." Gasoline is an incredibly efficient way to power a vehicle; a gallon of gas has a lot of energy in it.But when you take that gas (or another fuel) and first use it to make electricity, you waste a nice part of that energy, mostly in the form of wasted heat---at the generator, through the transmission lines, etc.
A gallon of gas may propel your car 25 miles. But the electricity you get from that gallon of gas won't get you nearly as far---so electric cars bum more fuel than gas-powered ones. If our electricity came mostly from nukes; or geothermal,or hydro, or solar, or wind, then an electric car truly would be clean. But for political, technical, and economic reasons,we don't use much of those energy sources.
In addition, electric cars' batteries which are poisonous for a long time will eventually end up in a landfill. And finally, When cars are the polluters, the pollution is spread across all the roads. When it's a power plant, though, all the junk is in one place. Nature is very good at cleaning up when things are too concentrated, but it takes a lot longer when all the garbage is in one spot.
【小題1】 What does "clueless" mean in paragraph 2?

A.People are seeing the California Greens everywhere.
B.People in California love to talk about zero-emissions vehicles.
C.People in California love to have their roofs covered with solar cells.
D.People there have no idea that so far electricity mainly comes from burning
coal, oil,etc.

A.Electric cars are not clean at all
B.Electric cars are better than gasoline-powered ones.
C.People cast doubts on electric cars' batteries.
D.Gasoline is an efficient way to powera vehicle.
【小題3】 The electricity we get from a gallon of gas may make our ear run
A.not less than 25 milesB.more than 25 miles
C.no more than 25 milesD.not more than 25 miles

A.do not burn fuel and more environmentally-friendly
B.a(chǎn)re toxic because it is difficult for nature to clean it up when their
batteries are buried in one spot.
C.a(chǎn)re very good at cleaning up when things are not too concentrated
D.a(chǎn)re poisonous for a long time and will eventually end up in a landfill
【小題5】 It can be inferred from the passage that
A.being green is good and should be encouraged in communication
B.electric cars are not clean in that we get electricity mainly by burning
something
C.zero-emissions vehicles should be chosen to protect our environment
D.electric cars are now the dominant vehicle compared with gasoline-powered

In so many ways, cyberspace(網(wǎng)絡(luò)空間) mirrors the real world. People ask for information, play games, and share hobby tips. Others buy and sell products. Still others look for friendship, or even love.
Unlike the real world, however, your knowledge about a person is limited to words on a computer screen. Identity and appearance mean very little in cyberspace. Rather, a person’s thoughts—or at least the thoughts they type—are what really count. So even the shyest person can become a chat-room star.
Usually, this “faceless” communication doesn’t create problems. Identity doesn’t really matter when you’re in a chat room discussing politics or hobbies. In fact, this emphasis on the ideas themselves makes the Internet a great place for exciting conversation. Where else can so many people come together to chat about their interests?
But some Internet users want more than just someone to chat with. They’re looking for serious love relationships. Is cyberspace a good place to find love? That answer depends on whom you ask. Some of these relationships actually succeed. Others fail miserably.
Supporters of online relationships claim that the Internet allows couples to get to know each other intellectually first. Personal appearance doesn’t get in the way.
But critics of online relationships argue that no one can truly know another person in cyberspace. Why? Because the Internet gives users a lot of control over how others view them. Internet users can carefully craft their words to fit whatever image they want to give. And they don’t have to worry about what their “faceless” communication is doing for their image. In a sense, they’re not really themselves.
All of this may be fine if the relationship stays in cyberspace. But not knowing a person is a big problem in a love relationship. With so many unknowns, it’s easy to let one’s imagination “fill in the blanks.” This inevitably leads to disappointment when couples meet in person. How someone imagines an online friend is often quite different than the real person.
So, before looking for love in cyberspace, remember the advice of Internet pioneer Clifford Stoll: “Life in the real world is far richer than anything you’ll find on a computer screen.”
(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)
【小題1】We learn about a person in cyberspace only through  _________________.
【小題2】Why is the Internet a great place for exciting conversation?
【小題3】What makes online love relationship often fail?
【小題4】From the passage we can learn that the writer __________________________ looking for love on the Internet.
