The worst days of any summer are the rainy ones. We spend all year looking forward to nice weather and long, hot days. In winter, with its cloudy days and bitter cold, we dream of those days at the beach, lying on the sand and enjoying the bright and burning sun. And then, summer comes, and it rains.

As a child, I would wake up to rainy summer days and come close to crying. It wasn’t fair. We suffered through months of school and experienced bad weather for those short ten weeks of freedom.

On those rainy summer days, I had nothing fun to do and could only sit inside, staring out at the rain like a bird in a cage. I was an only child, so there was no one else to play with. My father worked from home, so I was not truly alone, but he could not actively play with me since he was at work. It was those days that I would watch whatever was on television or read any books that I could find lying around. I’d pray each night that the rain would not be there the next day.

As an adult, though, my opinion of summer rain has changed. When you have to work every day, summer is not as exciting. Everything seems uninteresting. Such a mindset makes you cheer for anything new or different. I spend the winter dreaming of summer and the summer dreaming of winter. When summer comes, I hate how hot it is. And then I look forward to the rain, because the rain brings with it a cold front, which makes me comfortable. Rainy days are still the worst days of the summer, but summer rain today means positively beautiful — and quite cooler — weather tomorrow.

1.When the author was a child, he ______.

A. liked staying indoors B. hated rainy days

C. dreamed on summer days D. preferred cooler weather

2.We can learn from the passage that the author ______.

A. could enjoy the brilliant sun in winter

B. preferred reading to playing outside

C. had no brothers or sisters

D. was often left alone at home

3.As an adult, the author views summer rain differently because ______.

A. rain makes the weather cooler

B. his summer holiday is very short

C. he knows it won’t last long

D. he can better deal with his spare time

One evening last summer, when I asked my 14 year old son, Ray, for help with dinner, his response shocked me."What’s a colander(漏勺)?" he asked.

I could only blame myself. In the family, nobody else’s hands went in the sauce except my own.But that night, as I explained with a touch of panic that a colander is the thing with holes in it, I wondered what else I hadn’t prepared Ray for.

As parents, while we focus on our sons’ confidence and character, we perhaps don’t always consider that we are also raising someone’s future roommates, boyfriends, husbands, or fathers.I wanted to know that I’d raised a boy who would never ask the woman in his life, "What’s for dinner?" So I came up with a plan: I would offer Ray a private home economics course.I was delighted to find that he didn’t say no.For two hours, three days a week, Ray was all mine. One day, as his tomato sauce reduced on the stove, he washed and seasoned a chicken for roasting. Then he rolled out the piecrust (餡餅皮) and filled it with apples, all while listening to my explanation on the importance of preheating an oven.

I knew that he would rather have been shooting hoops in the driveway than learning to mend socks with his mother—he tried to beg not to have sewing lessons, even though I insisted that one day, someone would find the sight of him fixing his own shirt very attractive— but it couldn’t be denied that he was learning, and more than just housekeeping."I appreciate what you do as a mom," he told me one day.Ray now understands the finer points of cooking, and more importantly, he realizes there’s nothing masculine (男子氣概的) about being helpless.

Now, not only can he make his own dinner, but also he can make a big meal for his family. That’s what I call a man.I’m glad that I prepared so great a present for my future daughter in-law.

1.Why was the author shocked at her son’s response?

A.Because he was not well behaved.

B.Because he refused to help with dinner.

C.Because he didn’t know the common kitchen tools.

D.Because he was very curious about kitchen tools.

2.In the author’s opinion, some parents pay little attention to _______.

A.building up children’s confidence

B.telling kids what is right and wrong

C.preparing children for their future life

D.making children live a hard life

3.After learning to do housework, Ray _______.

A.fell in love with sewing

B.did other work in the house

C.began to be more hardworking

D.a(chǎn)cknowledged his mother’s efforts

4.We can infer from the text that Ray _______.

A.made great progress in cooking.

B.a(chǎn)lways thought housework interesting.

C.preferred sewing to cooking.

D.was unwilling to learn cooking at first.

5.What would the author like to convey in the text?

A.Useful education for boys

B.The importance of housework

C.Boys should be involved in housework.

D. Cooking and sewing make boys masculine.

In 1978, I was 18 and was working as a nurse in a small town about 270 km away from Sydney, Australia. I was looking forward to having five days off from duty. Unfortunately, the only one train a day back to my home in Sydney had already left. So I thought I’d hitch a ride (搭便車).

I waited by the side of the highway for three hours but no one stopped for me. Finally, a man walked over and introduced himself as Gordon. He said that although he couldn’t give me a lift, I should come back to his house for lunch. He noticed me standing for hours in the November heat and thought I must be hungry. I was doubtful as a young girl but he assured (使…放心)me I was safe, and he also offered to help me find a lift home afterwards. When we arrived at his house, he made us sandwiches. After lunch, he helped me find a lift home.

Twenty-five years later, in 2003, while I was driving to a nearby town one day, I saw an elderly man standing in the glaring heat, trying to hitch a ride. I thought it was another chance to repay someone for the favour I’d been given decades earlier. I pulled over and picked him up. I made him comfortable on the back seat and offered him some water.

After a few moments of small talk, the man said to me, “You haven’t changed a bit, even your red hair is still the same.”

I couldn’t remember where I’d met him. He then told me he was the man who had given me lunch and helped me find a lift all those years ago. It was Gordon.

1.The author had to hitch a ride one day in 1978 because .

A. her work delayed her trip to Sydney

B. she missed the only train back home

C. she was going home for her holidays

D. the town was far away from Sydney

2.Which of the following did Gordon do according to Paragraph 2?

A. He helped the girl find a ride.

B. He gave the girl a ride back home.

C. He bought sandwiches for the girl.

D. He watched the girl for three hours.

3.The reason why the author offered a lift to the elderly man was that .

A. she realized he was Gordon

B. she had known him for decades

C. she was going to the nearby town

D. she wanted to repay the favour she once got

4.What does the author want to tell the readers through the story?

A. Those who give rides will be repaid.

B. Good manners bring about happiness.

C. Giving sometimes produces nice results.

D. People should offer free rides to others.
