I was doing some last-minute Christmas shopping in a toy store. A nicely dressed little girl was  36  the teddy bears(泰迪熊) beside her father  37 she saw a little boy walk in and stop in front of the Pokémon toys. His jacket was obviously too small. He had money in his hand.  38 , it looked no more than five dollars at most. He was with his father as well, and  39  picking up the Pokémon video games. Each time he showed one to his father, his father  40  his head, “No”.
Rather  41 , the boy gave up the video games and chose a book of stickers  42 . After they walked away, the little girl ran over to the Pokémon video games. She excitedly picked up one  43  on top of the others, and raced down toward the check-out(結(jié)賬處). I picked up my purchases and  44 the girl and her father.
Then, much to the little girl’s  45 , the little boy and his father got in line  46 her and me. After the video was paid for and bagged, the little girl  47 it back to the cashier(收銀員) and  48  something to her. The cashier smiled and put the  49 under the counter(柜臺(tái)). I was putting things in my bag when the little boy came up to the cashier. The cashier said, “  50  , you’re my hundredth customer today, and you win a prize!” and she handed the boy the Pokémon game. The boy could only   51  in disbelief. It was, he said,   52  what he had wanted! The little girl and her father had been standing at the doorway, and I saw the biggest and  53 smile on that little girl I have ever seen in my life.
I suddenly understood that the world is not  54 into the strong who care and the  55 who are cared for. We must each in turn care and be cared.

Quit while you're ahead
I am one of those people who are terrible at saying no.I take on too many projects at once, and spend too much of my time doing things I'd rather not be doing.I get work done, but it's not always the best I can do, or the best way I could spend my time.
That's why my newest goal, both as a professional and a person, is to be a quitter.
Being a quitter isn't being someone who gives up, who doesn't see important things through to the end.I aspire (渴望?) to be the opposite of that. The quitter I want to be is someone who gets out when there's no value in what he's doing, or when that value comes at the expense of something more important.
A friend of mine once told me, "I knew I was an adult when I could stop reading a book, even after getting 500 pages into it." Strange though it sounds, we all tend to do this.We get involved in something, realize we don't want to be a part of it, but keep on going. We say "Well, I've already invested so much time in this, I might as well stick it out."
I propose the opposite: quit as often as possible, regardless of project status or time invested. If you're reading a book, and don't like it, stop reading.Cut your losses, realize that the smartest thing to do is to stop before your losses grow even more, and quit.Instead of reading an entire book you hate, read half of a bad one and half of a good one.Isn't that a better use of your time?
Step back for a second.Let's learn how to say "no" at the beginning, or in the middle, and free up more of our time to do the things we'd like to be doing, and the things actually worth doing. Saying no is hard, and admitting a mistaken yes is even harder. If we do both, we'll start to make sure that we're spending our time creating value, rather than increasing our losses.Let's be quitters together.
小題1:The author wants to be a quitter, because he _____.
A.hopes to improve his personality
B.wishes to have more time for relaxation
C.expects to make more efficient use of his time
D.has found it hard to do several things at one time
小題2:In what circumstances does the author suggest quitting is a good idea?
A.When you feel tired and need a rest.
B.When you know a task cannot be finished.
C.When you meet with difficulties along the way in your life.
D.When you realize what you are doing is not worth the time.
小題3:If you stop reading a book you hate, the author might think that ______.
A.you are wise to cut your losses
B.it's a pity that you have wasted so much time
C.you should finish a book that you have started
D.you should regret choosing the wrong book
小題4:The message the author tries to convey is to ______.
A.learn to say no
B.live your life to the fullest
C.create more value
D.stop doing many things at once

It is normal for parents to question their children's hairstyle or the clothes they wear. But today teenagers and their parents argue over something else: money.
Children are spending lots of it. Parents used to say to their children, "You're wearing that?" Now they say, "You paid how much for that?"
Children in the US today spend five times more money than their parents did when they were young.
So what are all these children buying? The list is long: ipods trainers(訓(xùn)練鞋), cellphones and jeans are typical items that children "have to" buy. And they will do anything to get them. They ask their parents over and over until they buy them.
But parents also need to take the blame for spending so much money. They want their children to have the best stuff. They end up competing with other parents over what their children have.
So no wonder children find it hard to learn the importance of saving money rather than spending it all the time.
And it's hard to save when companies use advertising and clever slogans to encourage young people to buy their products. They even encourage children to keep asking their parents for something until they get it.
Today, you don't even need to have money in order to buy something. Banks give out credit cards and loans all the time so people are saving less and less. We are used to there being lots of money around. And if you don't have much you can always borrow some.
But this hasn't always been the case. When our grandparents were young there was very little money and everyone had to save hard for things they bought. They only bought things they needed, not things they just wanted.
The older generation made the wise expression, "Money doesn’t grow on trees." This is as true now as it was 50 years ago. They give money a great deal of value. And we all have a lot to learn from them.
小題1:The text mainly tells us ________.
A.divisions between teenagers and their parents
B.children's high consumption (消費(fèi)) of products
C.what is popular among children at the moment
D.how to spend money wisely
小題2:Parents are to blame for children's spending a lot of money because ________.
A.they encourage children to care about the latest fashion
B.their consumption habits set a bad example for children
C.they always give children too much pocket money
D.they do nothing to help children establish healthy consumption habits
小題3:Nowadays people find it hard to save money because of all of the following reasons EXCEPT that ________.
A.banks provide credit cards and loans
B.a(chǎn)dvertisements draw people’s attention to new products
C.people have more money than in the past and saving is out of date
D.people's living standard has improved and they can buy what they want
小題4:The saying "Money doesn't grow on trees." in the last paragraph is intended to tell us that ________.
A.the older generation understood how to teach children to save
B.in the past, people attached more importance to saving money
C.money has a great deal of value
D.money is not easily earned and people should be careful spending it

Tom arrived at the bus station quite early for the London bus. The bus for London would not leave until five to twelve. He saw a lot of people waiting in the station. Some were standing in lines; others were walking about. There was a group of schoolgirls. Their teacher was trying to keep them in order. Tom looked around but there was nowhere for him to sit.
He walked into the station café. He looked up at the clock there. It was only twenty to twelve. He found a seat and sat down, facing a large mirror on the wall. Just then, John, one of Tom’s friends, came in and sat with Tom.
“What time is your bus?” asked John.
“Oh, there is plenty of time yet,” answered Tom.
“Oh, I’ll get you some more tea then,” said John.
They talked while drinking. Then Tom looked at the clock again.
“Good heavens! It’s going back-ward!” he cried. “A few minutes ago it was twenty to twelve and now it’s half past eleven.”
“You are looking at the clock in the mirror,” said John.
Tom wanted to kick himself for being so foolish. The next bus was not to leave for another hour. He has never liked mirror since then.
