I went to a movie theatre with my roommate the other day. His hobby is seeing movies. He watches movies more than once a week. In our room,he has put a movie actress’ poster on the wall. He is crazy about movies. There are no bus services in this town, and I seldom get away from the campus. I always spend my time reading books in the library, swimming in the pool,or jogging,so I was really glad when he said he would take me to the movie.
The movie we saw was called The Patriot. It showed the love between a father and his children during the time of the American War of Independence. The father hated the British army and took revenge(報仇) for his son’s death. Actually,it is a war story based on history, but the story was created by a writer for entertainment.
The movie was enjoyable because sometimes it made us laugh, and other times it made us cry. As an entertainment it was a successful movie. But I must say that a serious and true story should not be used for entertainment.
Americans and Japanese behave differently when they see a movie. I can give all my attention to a movie in America, but I can’t be there because of the audience. They laugh loudly when an actor tells a joke. It is amazing to me that they express their emotions so openly. If I did that in a public place in Japan, most people would look at me or complain about the noise, and the person beside me might say, “Could you be silent?”
There seems to be a cultural difference between the US and Japan. It is said that Americans always express their emotions and opinions openly and that the Japanese always try to hide theirs. I’m glad I can observe such a difference as I feel that I am experiencing a real thing while staying in the US.
