It was a hot summer day. My dad and I were ready to go out for a ride on the motorcycle with my friend Katie and the dog the phone call came, a call that made that bright, beautiful day a cold, dark, one.

I had just put on my suit, shorts, and tank top(無(wú)袖緊身背心), and packed my bag with sunscreen and else I would need for the day. I ran into my parents’ room to find Dad. When I saw him on the phone, he was crying. I’d never seen my dad cry before. My heart . what possibly could have happened?

“Max, I’m so sorry,” I heard him say. That’s when it me. I knew that Suzie had died. Max has been my dad’s best friend for years. Suzie, his daughter, had a rare disease that mainly affected her body. Her brain was OK. She knew what was ; she knew that she had problems and was different from other kids. Once she told her dad that she wished she could die and be born in a different body. Yet although she couldn’t live a normal life, she was still happy.

When Suzie and I were little, we spent quite a bit of time together. As we grew up, we grew . She lived in New York, and I lived in the Midwest. When Suzie was ten, she had to live in a in Virginia. About eight months before she died, Max gave us her number at the hospital and we talked on the phone at least twice a week the end. In a way, she lived through me. After we found out about her , we made our plans to go to New York for the funeral. When she was alive, I sent her a Beanie Baby and she sent one back to me. I had her another one but never had the chance to send it to her, so I took it to put in her casket(棺材).

To be honest, I learned so much from her. She gave me far more than I could ever give to her. I will never forget her or the talks we had. I now know that I must never anything for granted, especially my health and the gift of life.

Stilton Cheese Rolling

May Day is a traditional day for celebrations, but the 2,000 English villagers of Stilton must be the only people in the world who include cheese rolling in their annual plans. Teams of four, dressed in a variety of strange and funny clothes , roll a complete cheese along a 50-metre course. On the way, they must not kick or throw their cheese, or go into their competitors' lane. Competition is fierce and the chief prize is a complete Stilton cheese weighing about four kilos (disappointingly, but understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones). All the competitors arc served with beer or port wine, the traditional accompaniment for Stilton cheese.

Fiery Foods Festival—The Hottest Festival on Earth

Every year more than 10,000 people head for the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. They come from as far away as Australia, the Caribbean and China, but they all share a common addiction—food that is not just spicy ,but hot enough to make your mouth burn, your head spin and your eyes water. Their destination is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival which is held over a period of three clays every March. You might like to try a chocolate-covered habanero pepper—officially the hottest pepper in the world—or any one of the thousands of products that are on show. But one thing's for sure—if you don't like the feeling of a burning tongue, this festival isn't for you!

La Tomatina—The World's Biggest Food Fight

The early morning sees the arrival of large trucks with tomatoes—official fight-starters get things going by casting tomatoes at the crowd.

The battle lasts little more than half an hour, in which time around 50,000 kilograms of tomatoes have been thrown at anyone or anything that moves, runs, or fights back. Then everyone heads down to the river to make friends again—and for a much-needed wash!

I created a writing group at my school this year, and it has become a hit with all students who enjoy writing. Now students of the group make rapid progress in their writing. Let me share a few tips that you can use to start your own writing group.

Set up separate groups for different ability levels

You probably don’t want to mix a gifted eighth grader with a second grader who writes very little. In a larger school, you could have a beginner group, a more advanced group, and a publishing group. Members can move to more appropriate groups if they are not comfortable in the current one.

Advertise the group in different ways

Send advertisements home with students, and put an advertisement on the school website or in the school newsletter.

The first meeting should be very open

At the first meeting, you should tell the students that this group is all about them. It is not a class, not a grade and not a requirement. Then tell them what some other writing groups do, and ask what they would like to do.

Set up a time to meet once or twice a month

It is important that students bring their writing with them. The group could go in any direction: criticize each other’s work, read your writing aloud, read silently, publish your work in a booklet (小冊(cè)子), play creativity games or do an online chat with a published author.

It will take a little while to find out what works best for your group

Search for creativity exercises and role plays. You might even be able to set up a special section of your school’s website just for your writing group.

1.The purpose of this passage is to ________.

A. introduce how to start up a writing group

B. offer some advice on how to teach writing

C. train highlevel students to start up a writing group

D. compare different tips on starting up a writing group

2.What does the underlined word “hit” probably mean?

A. problem B. test C. tool D. success

3.Which of the following is NOT the activity of a writing group?

A. Practice role plays.

B. Meet a published author.

C. Criticize each other’s work.

D. Play creativity games.

First Aid in Fires

It’s important to know what to do in dangerous situations such as a fire.

When you are caught in a fire, don’t panic. Firstly, you should call 119 and report it at once. If you’re in thick smoke, keep close to the ground and use a towel to cover your mouth and nose. Secondly, don’t take a lift or jump from a high building. You can fasten ropes to something that’s fixed and then slide down the building. Thirdly, get away from the fire as quickly as you can. Nothing is more important than life. Remember: once you get out of the fire, don’t go back again.

Tim Berners-Lee is the man who wrote the software program that led to the foundation of the World Wide Web. Britain played an important part in developing the first generation of computers. The parents of Tim Berners-Lee both worked on one of the earliest commercial (商業(yè)的) computers and talked about their work at home. As a child he would build models of computers from packing material. After graduating from Oxford University he went on to the real thing. In the 1980s, scientists were already communicating using a primitive version of e-mail. While working at a laboratory in Switzerland, Tim Berners-Lee wrote a program, which let him store these messages. This gave him another idea: write a program that will let academics(學(xué)術(shù)界人士) from across the world share information on a single place. In 1990 he wrote the HTTP and HTML programs which form the basis of the World Wide Web.

The next year his programs were placed on to the Internet. Everyone was welcome to use them and improve them if they could. Programmers used this codes(密碼) to work with different operating systems. New things like web browsers(瀏覽器) and search engines were developed. Between 1991 and 1994 the number of web pages rose from 10 to 100,000.

In 1994 Tim Berners-Lee formed the newly formed World Wide Web consortium(協(xié)會(huì)), or W3C. More than 200 leading companies and laboratories are represented by W3C. Together they make sure that everyone can share equally on the web. “The Web can help people to understand the way that others live and love. It helps us understand the humanity of people.” he says.

PART Ⅳ WRITING (45 marks)

Section A (10 marks)

Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blankets by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

Like our body, our memory needs regular exercise to be in good condition. Like the sportsman who must train to allow the body to respond to difficult times, the memory needs its own special training in order to stay in “shape” and improve.

There are many factors that can cause poor memory like insomnia (失眠), depression and alcohol. However, there are simple ways which you can follow to keep your memory in shape and actually help you to improve your memory’s condition and performance.

Never stop learning. Look for topics that interest you and really get involved in learning new information about them. Reading and attending lectures or programs are sources of continuous education of your brain with beneficial results to your memory.

Develop your social and family relationships. The more social you are, the better it is for your brain. Studies have shown that the brain and heart have a lot to gain from good family and social relationships.

Exercise your mind with games. The more you use your brain, the more you help your memory stay in shape. There are many games that can make you an intelligent person as well as entertain you such as chess, puzzles and board games.

Exercise physically can improve your memory. This type of exercise improves the circulatory (血液循環(huán)的) system. Even the simple but regular daily exercise such as fast walking can improve the heart and oxygenation(供氧) of the brain. The benefits of exercise affect positively many body systems, as well as our memory and other cognitive(認(rèn)知的) capabilities.

Eat more fruit and vegetables. What we eat every day affects the performance and long-term condition of our memory. Fruit and vegetables are an excellent source of antioxidants(抗氧化劑) and vitamins that can help and benefit the nervous system.

So our memory is like a sportsman. The more we practice our brains and memory, the better their performance will be.

1. When a starving man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when an executive(業(yè)務(wù)主管)gets a new sports car, visions of country clubs dance into view. The many wants of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels. 2. The first and most basic levels of wants involve food. Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears: clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War II these wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. 3. It included such items as automobiles and new houses. By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared: the “l(fā)ife-enriching” level. While the other levels involve physical satisfaction-the feeding, comfort, safety, and transportation of the human body-this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called “l(fā)uxury”(奢侈) items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical care, and entertainment. 4. On this level, a greater percentage of consumer spending goes to services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level? A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime and prejudice. 5. In this way, we can enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.

A.Then a third level appeared.

B.Human wants seem endless.

C.When there is money enough to satisfy one level of wants, another level appears.

D.There are several levels of wants in one’s life.

E.At this stage, we now may seek to ensure the health, safety, and leisure.

F.Also included here are fancy foods and the latest styles in clothing.

G.Different people have different wants on each level.
