Several years ago, while attending a communication course, I experienced a most unusual process. The instructor asked us to list in our past that we felt of, regretted, or incomplete about and read our lists aloud.
This seemed like a very 38 process, but there’ s always some soul in the crowd who will volunteer. The instructor then that we find ways to people, or take some action to right any wrong doings. I was seriously wondering how this could ever my communication.
Then the man next to me raised his hand and volunteered this story: “Making my , I remembered an incident from high school. I grew up in a small town. There was a Sheriff of us kids liked. One night, my two buddies and I decided to play a on him.
After drinking a few beers, we climbed the tall water tank in the middle of the town, and wrote on the tank in bright red paint: Sheriff Brown is a s.o.b.(畜生). The next day, almost the whole town saw our glorious . Within two hours, Sheriff Brown had us in his office. My friends told the truth but I lied. No one found out.”
“Nearly 20 years later, Sheriff Brown’s name on my list. I didn’t even know if he was still . Last weekend, I dialed the information in my hometown and found there was a Roger Brown still listed. I tried his number. After a few , I heard, “Hello?” I said, “Sheriff Brown?” Paused. “Yes.” “Well, this is Jimmy Calkins.”
“And I want you to know that I did it.” Paused. “I knew it!” he yelled back. We had a good laugh and a discussion. His closing words were: “Jimmy, I always felt bad for you your buddies got it off their chest, but you were carrying it all these years. I want to thank you for calling me...for your sake.”
Jimmy inspired me to all 101 items on my list within two years, and I always remember what I learned from the course: It’s never too late to the past wrongdoings.

I always knew that I depended way too much on my phone. I didn’t know how much, so I decided to do this challenge to find out.
Every morning since I got a smartphone, I’ve used The Weather Channel App to find out what to . On the first morning I had to dress without guidance, but I was able to guess that the day would be cold and foggy by looking out of my window.
I couldn’t tell what time it was. I haven’t worn a for more than a year, because my phone showed the time. So I was late for friends who had been on the bus for two hours from Santa Monica to Palos Verdes. I was also late for my part-time job. And , I couldn’t call people to tell them that I was running late.
Getting places was harder, too. I got because I couldn’t use the GPS (汽車(chē)導(dǎo)航系統(tǒng)) on my phone. My driving, though, got a lot because I no longer had my phone in one hand checking directions while with the other.
But the number one trouble was not having my contact list (聯(lián)絡(luò)簿). I forgot to write down my friends’ and family members’ phone numbers before I the challenge. It was sad to realize that I couldn’t my brother’s and my mom’s cell phone numbers. Oh, how I wished to turn on the phone for just a second to look up phone numbers!
Even with all the problems, however, I found not worrying about missing a text message or an e-mail.
This was a great learning experience. It surprised me how I’d taken no notice of even the things like remembering phone numbers. We all should take some time to think about how we can depend on our cell phones.

I have nothing to say about whether or not “A Day Without Immigrants(移民)” had a positive or negative effect on the question of how the federal government should deal with the huge population of undocumented illegal immigrants in this country. I'll leave that question to others.
Regardless of how you feel about the event, one conclusion is obvious. Using the theme of “A Day Without” as a way to focus national attention on a particular subject is a great idea, and could serve as a method for increasing public consciousness about other issues that affect daily life in America. Here are my top three examples:
“A Day Without Speeding.” How hard could this be? If all drivers would strictly obey every posted speed limit on highways, downtown, on neighborhood streets, and in parking lots for one 24-hour cycle, the benefits would be huge.
“A Day Without Losing Your Temper.” A higher degree of difficulty here, and I know that from personal experience. When something goes wrong at home or on the job, there may be brief satisfaction in yelling or kicking the furniture, but bursting into anger usually has nothing to do with the approach to the heart of the matter.
“A Day Without Having All The Answers.” I would like to get a break from hearing anyone speak the phrase, “Here’s what you’re doing wrong.” Right now the US is packed with citizens who believe they can point out the cause of every single problem in existence and then solve it in a moment. I believe they need to be quiet sometimes and use their ears instead of their voices.
I wonder how would average Americans react to such a national pause? Would it be a day of reaction against anger, or joyful celebrations?
1.The first paragraph suggests ________.
A. the writer is against “A Day Without Immigrants”
B. immigrants are not equally treated by the US government
C. the immigrants issue is so complex that the author has to refer to others
D. some move to America without the permission of the US government
2.The author uses his “top three examples” to________.
A. criticize the undocumented illegal immigrants in America
B. show public consciousness of some subjects could be raised
C. encourage common people to create more similar activities
D. indicate some bothering issues affecting people’s daily life
3.According to the author, losing one’s temper is ________.
A. unpleasant B. pointless C. relaxing D. personal
4.The writer suggests “a day without having all the answers”, because ________.
A. he thinks the Americans are too proud
B. he wants to have a chance to speak his mind
C. he expects others to keep quiet and calm
D. he hopes to get a break from the problems
