語篇理解
The old conditions of travel and the new conditions of most travel of today are exactly opposite. For in old travel, as on horseback or on foot now, you saw the country while you traveled. Many of your stopping places were for rest, or because night had fallen, and you could see nothing at night. Under the old system, therefore, a wise traveler might keep moving from day to day, slowly, in deed, but seeing something all the time, and learning what the country was through which he passed by, and talking with the people. But in the new system, he is shut up with his party and a good many other parties in a tight box with glass windows, and whirled on through dust if it be dusty, or rain if it be rainy, under arrangements which make it impossible to talk with the people of the country, and almost impossible to see what that country is.

When a tornado (龍卷風(fēng)) destroys a house, it doesn't blow it down the way a hurricane (十二級(jí)臺(tái)風(fēng)) does. It makes the house explode. Why does the house explode?
The air that surrounds a house presses against it all the time. It usually has a force of about fifteen pounds per square inch. The air inside the house presses out against the walls just as hard. When a tornado passes over a house, it suddenly sucks away the air outside the house. The air inside the house still pushes out against the walls, but now there is nothing pushing back. So the walls are pushed out in an explosion.

My brother Martin is really for the birds! He has pictures of birds on the walls of his room. He reads books about birds. He even goes on bird-watching trips. I used to think that was pretty silly.
Martin decided we needed more birds in our yard. He began building bird feeders. He built them out of wood, jar lids, plastic bottles, tinsyou name it! Our yard was full of bird feeders.
