Music comes in many forms; most countries have a style of their own. Poland has its folks. Hungary has its czardas. Argentina is famous for the tango. The U.S. is known for jazz, the type of music that has gained worldwide popularity.

Jazz is American contribution to popular music. While classical music follows formal European tradition(傳統(tǒng))jazz is rather a free form. It is full of energy, expressing the moods, interests, and emotions (感情) of the people. It is breaking and exciting with a modern sound. In the 1920s jazz sounded like America. And so it does today.

The origins (起源)of the music are as interesting as the music itself. Jazz was invented by American Negroes, or blacks, as they are called today, who were brought to the Southern states as slaves. They were sold to farm owners and forced to work long hours in the cotton and tobacco fields. This work was hard and life was short. When a Negro died his friends and relatives would gather and carry the body to have a ceremony before they buried him.

There was always a band with them. On the way to the ceremony the band played slow, solemn music suitable for the situation. But on the way home the mood changed. Spirits lifted. Everyone was happy. Death had removed one of their members, but the living were glad to be alive. The band played happy music, this music made everyone want to dance. It was an early form of jazz.

Music has always been important in Negro life. The blacks, who were brought to America from West Africa, had a rich musical tradition. In the fields, they made up work songs. Singing made the hard work go faster. And when they got to Christianity, they made lovely spirituals, which have become an everlasting part of American music.

More and more often we heard of people talking about Karaoke (卡拉OK). But what on earth it is about still remains a question for many people. Karaoke is a sort of acoustic (聽覺的) equipment which was invented in Japan around the middle of the 1970's. It means "a band without people" in Japanese. In fact, it is just a music tape without words. This equipment first appeared in some public houses and snack bars, and mainly for the customers to enjoy themselves. Most of the music in Karaoke was popular music. Therefore, at times,  when anyone felt like it, he might sing songs to the accompaniment (陪伴) of the music that came from the equipment. Shortly after its invention, Karaoke was spread to the whole world. It was introduced to China and was welcomed by many people. Although you are not a good singer, or even sometimes you may sing out of tune, you can always enjoy yourself by singing Karaoke.

Einstein, a great scientist of the age, was almost as strange as his Theory of Relativity.

Once, while riding a street car in Berlin, he told the conductor that he had not given him the right change. The conductor counted the change again and found it to be correct, so he handed it to Einstein, saying, “The trouble with you is that you don’t know your figures.”

Einstein said that there were only twelve people living who understood his Theory of Relativity although a good many books had been written to explain it.

He had nothing but contempt(蔑視) for the things most people set their hearts on --- for fame and riches(財富) and luxury(奢華).

閱讀理解
Music died here last spring, or rather, it was killed by members of the school committee who ignored
the importance of music and drama as part of the highschool curriculum.
The committee decided that teaching students how to take a standardized test is more important than
a curriculum in which students can explore their interests in the arts as well as academics. Because the
school system is running out of funding, it needs to make sure that students pass the mastery test or even
more money will be lost. If students fail the state standardized test, it is not the fault of drama and music
classes-they are failing because the "academic" classes are not sufficient.
It is painful to think of how many students will be discouraged from singing, acting, and playing
instruments because school programs are no longer offered. Many families cannot afford private music
lessons, and many potential musicians and artists may not find their calling if they are not exposed to it in
school. The fact that the school committee thinks the arts are not worth the investment will certainly make
some students believe the arts are not worth their time or support and the cycle will continue.
Teaching for a test does not shape students into complete, well-rounded people. It blocks the natural
sense to create and express feelings through art-there is more to life than the analytical thinking that math
and English provide. What happens after a test?Sure, a student might graduate, but they will have limited
knowledge-certainly not a good preparation for the real world.

1. Music and drama are not included in the highschool curriculum mainly because ________.
A. the school committee pays no attention to them
B. the school is afraid of losing financial support
C. the students are not interested in both of them
D. the state standardized test is more important

2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The sufficiency of the classes determines students' performance in the mastery test.
B. Quite a few students are discouraged from learning music and art in today's school system.
C. Students can be musicians and artists only if they can afford private music lessons.
D. The school committee completely influences students' attitude towards the arts.

3. We can learn that music and art can ________.
A. motivate students in creativity and expression
B. make students roundshaped people in future
C. provide students with analytical thinking
D. prevent students graduation from high school

4. The best title of the passage can be ________.
A. "Who killed music and drama?"
B. "Can curriculum go without music?"
C. "Why is music so important?"
D. "How to prepare for the real world?"
