How many of us can really ever thank our mothers for what they do for us? I am now 40 years old, so it's been a lot of years that I've had my mom's loving     and direction behind me pushing me gently when I need it.
When I was ill, mom would take care of me    . When I had a terrible dream, she would never    me  for stealing into her bed. When I graduated from college, she took      in me as I walked across that stage. When life would get me down, she would tell me that ,it's always dark     the down ,She's always been my greatest     keeping-me up when life tried to defeat me. She never told me that anything was impossible or that I set my goals too high. With a gentle guiding hand she got me back on the right:,   if I faltered (搖晃) .
A    thank you will never be enough for the kindness and love she has shown to us over the years. My mom     _ more than flowers, candy or other gifts. There isn't a gift in the world that could ever        my thanks for everything she has done for me over the years.

Home to me means a sense of familiarity and nostalgia(懷舊).It’s fun to come home.It looks the same.It smells the same. You’ll realize what’s changed is you.Home is where we can remember pain, love, and some other experiences:We parted here;My parents met here;I won three championships here.
If I close my eyes,I can still have a clear picture in mind of my first home.I walk in the door and see a brown sofa surrounding a low glasstop wooden table. To the right of the living room is my first bedroom. It’s empty, but it’s where my earliest memories are.
There is the dining room table where I celebrated birthdays, and where I cried on Halloween-when I didn’t want to wear the skirt my mother made for me.I always liked standing on that table because it made me feel tall and strong. If I sit at this table,I can see my favorite room in the house,my parents’ room.It is simple:a brown wooden dresser lines the right side of the wall next to a television and a couple of photos of my grandparents on each side.Their bed is my safe zone.I can jump on it anytime-waking up my parents if I am scared or if I have an important announcement that cannot wait until the morning.
I’m lucky because I know my first home still exists. It exists in my mind and heart,on a physical property(住宅) on West 64th street on the western edge of Los Angeles. It is proof I lived,I grew, and I learned.
Sometimes when I feel lost,I lie down and shut my eyes, and I go home.I know it’s where I’ll find my family,my dogs, and my belongings.I purposely leave the window open at night because I know I’ll be blamed by Mom.But I don’t mind, because I want to hear her say my name, which reminds me I’m home.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:不詳 題型:閱讀理解

When you are little, it’s not hard to believe you can change the world. I remember my enthusiasm when, at the age of 12, I addressed delegates at the Rio Earth Summit. “I am only a child,” I told them .“Yet I know that if all the money spent on war was spent on ending poverty and finding environment answers, what a wonderful place this would be. In school you teach us not to fight with others, to work things out, to respect others, to clean up our mess, not to hurt other creatures, to share, not to be greedy. Then why do you go out and do the thing you tell us not to do ? You grown-ups say you love us, but I challenge you, please, to make your actions reflect your words.”
I spoke for six minutes and received a standing ovation. Some of the delegates even cried. I thought that maybe I had reached some of them, that my speech might actually spur(激勵(lì)) action. Now, a decade from Rio, after I’ve sat through many more conferences, I’m not sure what has been accomplished. My confidence in the people in power and in the power of an individual’s voice to reach them has been deeply shaken.
When I was little, the world was simple. But as a young adult, I’m learning that as we have to make choices — education, career, lifestyle — life gets more and more complicated. We are beginning to feel pressure to produce and be successful. We are taught that economic growth is in progress, but aren’t taught how to pursue a happy, healthy or sustainable(可持續(xù)的) way of living. And we are learning that what we wanted for the future when we were 12 was ideal and innocent.
Today I’m no longer a child, but I’m worried about what kind of environment my children will grow up in. I know change is possible, because I am changing, still figuring out what I think. I am still deciding how to live my life. The challenges are great, but if we accept individual responsibility and make sustainable choices, we will rise to the challenges, and we will become part of the positive tide of change.
小題1:The purpose of what the writer said at the age of 12 was to _____.
A.end poverty and make school beautiful
B.find environmental answers and keep the words that they always told themselves
C.end poverty and solve the problems about environment
D.find a wonderful place and clean it up
小題2:What does the underlined word “ovation” in the second paragraph refer to _____.
A.a(chǎn) long period of laughing
B.a(chǎn) warm welcome
C.a(chǎn)n expression used for greeting
D.a(chǎn) long period of clapping and applause
小題3:It becomes clear that the writer is possibly _____ now.
A.in his teens
B.in his twenties
C.in his thirties
D.in his forties
小題4:Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.the writer thinks what he thought at the age of 12 is mature.
B.the writer’s children will certainly live in an ideal environment.
C.the writer’s confidence in the people in power has deeply shaken their voice.
D.the writer’s belief does not change when he grows up.

I was blind, but I was ashamed of it if it was known. I refused to use a white stick and hated asking for help. After all, I was a teenager girl, and I couldn't bear people to look at me and think I was not like them. I must have been a terrible danger on the roads, coming across me wandering through the traffic; motorists probably would have to step rapidly on their brakes. Apart from that, there were all sorts of disasters that used to occur on the way to and from work.
One evening, I got off the bus about halfway home where I had to change buses, and as usual I ran into something. "I'm awfully sorry," I said and stepped forward only to run into it again. When it happened a third time, I realized I had been apologizing to a lamppost. This was just one of the stupid things that constantly happened to me. So I carried on and found the bus stop, which was a request stop, where the bus wouldn't stop unless passengers wanted to get on or off. No one else was there and I had to try to guess if the bus had arrived.
Generally in this situation, because I hated showing I was blind by asking for help, I tried to guess at the sound. Sometimes I would stop a big lorry and stand there feeling stupid as it drew away. In the end, I usually managed to swallow my pride and ask someone at the stop for help.
But on this particular evening no one joined me at the stop; it seemed that everyone had suddenly decided not to travel by bus. Of course I heard plenty of buses pass, or I thought I did. But because I had given up stopping them for fear of making a fool of myself, I let them all go by. I stood there alone for half an hour without stopping one. Then I gave up. I decided to walk on to the next stop.

An old woman had two large pots (罐), one on each end of a pole (扁擔(dān)). She carried the pole with the pots across her neck.
One of the pots had a crack (裂縫) in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered (遞送) a full pot of water. At the end of the long walk from the well to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half-full.

“For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate (裝飾) the table. Without you being just the way you are, I would not have this beauty.”
