Each Indian(印第安人) was supposed to keep his birth name until he was old enough to earn one for himself. But his playmates(游戲伙伴) would always give him a name of their own. No matter what his parents called him, his childhood friends would use the name they had chosen. Often it was not pleasing, such as Bow Legs or Bad Boy. But sometimes a name fit so well that the youngster found it difficult to shake it off. If he could not earn a better one from a war later, he could be stuck with a name like Bow Legs for the rest of his life.
The Indian earned his real name when he was old enough for his first fight against the enemy. His life name depended on how he acted during this first battle. When he returned from the war, the whole tribe would gather and observe the ceremony in which he would be given his name by the chief. If he had done well, he would get a good name. Otherwise he might be called Crazy Wolf or Man-Afraid-Of-a-Horse. So an Indian’s name told his record or described the kind of man he was.
A man was given many chances to improve his name, however. If in a later battle he was brave in fighting against the enemy, he was given a batter name. Some of our great fighters had as many as twelve names—all good and each better than the last.
An Indian’s names belonged to him for the rest of his life. No one else could use them. Even he himself could not give them away because names were assigned by the tribe, not the family. So no man could pass on his name unless the chief and the tribe asked him to do so.
Sometimes an Indian would be asked to give his name to a son who had performed a noticed deed. I know of only three of four times when this happened. It is the rarest honor for a person—the honor of assuming(承擔(dān)) his father’ name.

小題3:If an Indian had more than ten names, it means that___________.
A.many people in the tribe liked him.B.he was a great fighter.
C.he had a lot of friends.D.he had fought in fewer than ten battles.
小題4:Which of the following statements is not true according to the passage?
A.The names given by the playmates of an Indian were usually not pleasant.
B.The life name of an Indian was earned in battle.

D.The Indians themselves were not allowed to give their names away.

The modern Olympic Games, founded in 1896, began as contests between individuals, rather than among nations, with the hope of promoting world peace through sportsmanship. In the beginning, the games were open only to amateurs. An amateur is a person whose involvement in an activity---from sports to science or the arts---is purely for pleasure. Amateurs, whatever their contributions to a field, expect to receive no form of compensation ; professionals, in contrast, perform their work in order to earn a living.
From the perspective of many athletes, however, the Olympic playing field has been far from level. Restricting the Olympics to amateurs has precluded(妨礙) the participation of many who could not afford to be unpaid. Countries have always desired to send their best athletes, not their wealthiest ones, to the Olympic Games.
A slender and imprecise line separates what we call “financial support” from “earning money.” Do athletes “earn money” if they are reimbursed(補(bǔ)償) for travel expenses? What if they are paid for time lost at work or if they accept free clothing from a manufacturer or if they teach sports for a living? The runner Eric Liddell was the son of poor missionaries; in 1924 the British Olympic Committee financed his trip to the Olympics, where he won a gold and a bronze medal. College scholarships and support from the United States Olympic Committee made it possible for American track stars Jesse Owens and Wilma Rudolph and speed skater Dan Jansen to train and compete. When the Soviet Union and its allies joined the games in 1952, the definition of amateur became still muddier. Their athletes did not have to balance jobs and training because as citizens in communist regimes, their government financial support was not considered payment for jobs.
In 1971 the International Olympic Committee(IOC) removed the word amateur from the rules, making it easier for athletes to find the support necessary to train and compete. In 1986 the IOC allowed professional athletes into the games.
There are those who regret the disappearance of amateurism from the Olympic Games. For them the games lost something special when they became just another way for athletes to earn money. Others say that the designation of amateurism was always questionable; they argue that all competitors receive so much financial support as to make them paid professionals. Most agree, however, that the debate over what constitutes an “amateur” will continue for a long time.
小題1: One might infer that _______________________.
A.developing Olympic-level skills in athletes is costly
B.professional athletes are mostly interested in financial rewards
C.a(chǎn)mateurs does not expect to earn money at the sport that is played

A.the ground the athletes played on was in bad condition
B.the poorer players were given some advantages
C.the rules did not work the same way for everyone
D.a(chǎn)mateurs were inferior to the professionals in many ways
小題3: The financial support given to athletes by the Soviet government can best be compared to ________________.
A.a(chǎn) gift received on a special occasion, such as a birthday
B.money received from a winning lottery ticket

D.money from charity organization

A.has held firm to its original vision of the Olympic games
B.has struggled with the definition of amateur over the years
C.regards itself as an organization for professional athletes only
D.did nothing but stop allowing communists to participate

Who are these people rushing by you on the street? More than 250 million people now call America" home" , but most of them can trace their families back to other parts of the world. The Wife-carrying World Championship has been celebrated in a small town in central Finland since 1992. in 1992, the people of the town decided that it was time to restart some long-forgotten traditions. Back in the late 1800s, there was a robber called Rosvo-Ronkainen in that area. He was said to only accept men as members of his gang who proved their worth in challenges. A popular saying goes, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, that’s not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn’t matter if the words come from someone’s else or ourselves --- the positive and negative effects are just as lasting.
We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We’re usually too embarrassed to admit it, though. In fact, we really shouldn’t be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.
This “self-talk” helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should alsobe quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!”
Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clear will probably respond in a similar manner. Or harsh(刻薄的)and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive.
Words possess power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it’s better left unsaid.
Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem(自尊)and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.
小題1:The main idea of the first paragraph is that ________.
A.not sticks and stones but words will hurt us
B.inspiring words give us confidence
C.negative words may let us down
D.words have a lasting effect on us
小題2: There is no sense for us to feel embarrassed when we talk to ourselves because _______
A.a(chǎn)lmost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves
B.we can benefit from talking to ourselves
C.talking to ourselves always gives us courage
D.it does no harm to have “self-talk” when we are alone
小題3: The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also timely _______
A.praise ourselvesB.remind ourselves
C.make ourselves relaxedD.give ourselves amusement
小題4:The author would probably hold the view that ___________
A.encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offers
B.negative words may stimulate us to make more progress
C.people tend to remember friendly words
D.it is better to think twice before talking to others

For years, there has been a bias (偏見(jiàn)) against science among clinical psychologists (臨床心理學(xué)家). In a two-year analysis to be published in November in Perspectives on Psychological Science, psychologists led by Timothy B. Baker of the University of Wisconsin charge that many clinical psychologists fail to “provide the treatments for which there is the strongest evidence of effectiveness” and “give more weight to their personal experiences than to science.” As a result, patients have no guarantee that their “treatment will be informed by … science.” Walter Mischel of Columbia University is even crueler in his judgment. “The disconnect between what clinical psychologists do and what science has discovered is an extreme embarrassment,” he told me, and “there is a widening gap between clinical practice and science.”
The “widening” reflects the great progress that psychological research has made in identifying (確認(rèn)) the most effective treatments. Thanks to strict clinical trials, we now know that teaching patients to think about their thoughts in new, healthier ways and to act on those new ways of thinking are effective against depression, panic disorder and other problems, with multiple trials showing that these treatments — the tools of psychology — bring more lasting benefits than drugs.
You wouldn’t know this if you sought help from a typical clinical psychologist. Although many treatments are effective, relatively few psychologists learn or practice them.
Why in the world not? For one thing, says Baker, clinical psychologists are “very doubtful about the role of science” and “l(fā)ack solid science training”. Also, one third of patients get better no matter what treatment (if any) they have, “and psychologists remember these successes, believing, wrongly, that they are the result of the treatment.”
When faced with evidence that treatments they offer are not supported by science, clinical psychologists argue that they know better than some study what works. A 2008 study of 591 psychologists in private practice found that they rely more on their own and colleagues’ experience than on science when deciding how to treat a patient. If they keep on this path as insurance companies demand evidence-based medicine, warns Mischel, psychology will “discredit itself.”
小題1:Many clinical psychologists fail to provide the most effective treatments because ________.
A.they are unfamiliar with their patientsB.they believe in science and evidence
C.they depend on their colleagues’ helpD.they rely on their personal experiences
小題2:The widening gap between clinical practice and science is due to _______.
A.the cruel judgment by Walter Mischel
B.the fact that most patients get better after being treated
C.the great progress that has been made in psychological research
D.the fact that patients prefer to take drugs rather than have other treatments
小題3:How do clinical psychologists respond when charged that their treatments are not supported by science?
A.They feel embarrassed.B.They try to defend themselves.
C.They are disappointed.D.They doubt their treatments.
小題4:In Mischel’s opinion, psychology will ____.
A.destroy its own reputation if no improvement is made
B.develop faster with the support of insurance companies
C.work together with insurance companies to provide better treatment
D.become more reliable if insurance companies won’t demand evidence-based medicine
