Preface
Science is a dominant(占優(yōu)勢的) theme in our culture. Since it touches almost every facet of our life, educated people need at least some acquaintance with its structure and operation. They should also have an understanding of the subculture in which scientists live and the kinds of people they are. An understanding of general characteristics of science as well as specific scientific concepts is easier to attain if one knows something about the things that excite and frustrate the scientist.
This book is written for the intelligent student or lay person whose acquaintance with science is superficial; for the person who has been presented with science as a musty storehouse of dried facts; for the person who sees the chief objective of science as the production of gadgets; and for the person who views the scientists as some sort of magician. The book can be used to supplement a course in any science, to accompany any course that attempts to give an understanding of the modern world, or – independently of any course – simply to provide a better understanding of science. We hope this book will lead readers to a broader perspective on scientific attitudes and a more realistic view of what science is, who scientists are, and what they do. It will give them an awareness and understanding of the relationship between science and our culture and an appreciation of the roles science may play in our culture. In addition, readers may learn to appreciate the relationship between scientific views and some of the values and philosophies that are pervasive(普遍的;深入的)in our culture.
We have tried to present in this book an accurate and up-to-date picture of the scientific community and the people who populate it. That population has in recent years come to comprise more and more women. This increasing role of women in the scientific subculture is not a unique incident but, rather, part of the trend evident in all segments of society as more women enter traditionally male-dominated fields and make significant contributions. In discussing these changes and contribution, however, we are faced with a language that is implicitly sexist, one that uses male nouns or pronouns in referring to unspecified individuals. To offset this built-in bias, we have adopted the policy of using plural nouns and pronouns whenever possible and, when absolutely necessary, alternating he and she. This policy is far form being ideal, but it is at least an acknowledgment of the inadequacy of our language in treating half of the human race equally.
We have also tried to make the book entertaining as well as informative. Our approach is usually informal. We feel, as do many other scientists, that we shouldn’t take ourselves too seriously. As the reader may observe, we see science as a delightful pastime rather than as a grim and dreary way to earn a living

A. 書的評論。 C. 書跋、書的附錄。 D. 書的結(jié)論部分。

Michelle Obama made a daring decision to return to the same designer who created her Inaugural (就職)Ball dress four years ago --- and the risk paid off.
The First Lady looked extremely attractive in a thin, sweeping, and ruby-colored dress by designer Jason Wu. She teamed the dramatic dress with heels by Jimmy Choo and a diamond ring by Kimberly McDonald.
She surprised the fashion establishment by returning to a Wu design which had been the custom made for her.
Four years ago at her first Inauguration Ball, Michelle shimmered(熠熠生輝)in an off-white, one-shouldered floor-length dress by the designer.
Wu, who was 26 at the time and had only been working in fashion for three years, saw his career take off after the First Lady's surprise decision to wear one of his dresses.
He said at the time that he was unaware she had chosen the dress and had been watching at home on his couch and eating pizza when she appeared.
After her 2013 decision, Wu told Women's Wear Daily: “Mrs Obama likes to keep her secrets. She fooled me again.”
Wu released a women's clothing and accessories(裝飾品)collection at Target last year and continues to be popular with the First Lady for official engagements.
The sleeveless, cross-halter neck dress with low-cut back flattered(突出)49-year-old Michelle's arms and neat waist.
It had been created especially for her by Wu and was a departure from the dark and plain colour tone she stuck to at earlier inauguration events.
Mrs Obama's new hairstyle -- she had bangs(美發(fā)沙龍)cut on her birthday last week  had been loosely tousled(蓬松的)for the special night.
Vice-President Joe Biden's wife Jill also looked attractive in a blue silk dress by Vera Wang at the Inauguration Ball

The Green Microgym in Portland,Oregon has all the usual stuff you'd expect-sweaty people, loud music, smooth exercise equipment-but it has some extras as well. Everywhere you look, there are power wires. And these aren't the typical kind that let you surf the Web while you ride a spin cycle-although. you can do that too.The gym uses special exercise equipment that captures(捕獲)the energy you create while riding, converts(轉(zhuǎn)換)it into electricity and channels it into the power outlets(插座).
The idea of using exercise equipment to produce electricity is not new. A gym in Hong Kong has been doing this since 2007. But clean (and healthy)energy is just now starting to catch on in U. S. gyms·"We have seen a significant increase in interest in the past six months, which is a good sign that fitness centers are ready to spend money on green technologies,” says Mike Curnyn,co-founder of the Green Revolution,a Connecticut-based firm that wires bikes into a central battery that can store energy.
The Green Microgym, first opened in 2008,has more than 200 members and is doing so well that owner Adam Boesel opened another one five miles from the original.Although membership costs about the same as ordinary gyms, customers can earn gift certificates from local businesses for watts produced while exercising. An average workout creates 37. 5 watt hours, which is enough to power a phone for a week.
Boesel uses spin bikes made by Resource Fitness,a Seattle company he co-owns,that captures energy produced from the flywheel. Wires send the converted AC current(交流電流)into any standard wall outlet-for this reason, the product line's name is Plug Out-and the energy created is used before the building draws power from the grid(電網(wǎng)).Unlike the Green Revolution equipment,Plug Out machines cannot store extra energy. A third company, the Florida-based ReRev,is adding converters to a specific brand of spin bikes. But since the converters add$1,000 to the price of the equipment, the ReRev and Green Revolution machines are at a disadvantage.
Resource Fitness,by contrast, sells its equipment for the same$1,200 price as non- electricity-producing machines, removing the question of how long it will be until the energy savings pay for the cost of the unit. The company can afford to do this because its designs don’t call for the extra wiring needed for battery packs and large converters. It is also trying to price competitively with standard equipment so more gyms-and gym goers-will make the switch.

  1. 1.

Members of the Green Microgym earn gift certificates for_______.

    1. A.
      using the man-powered exercise equipment
    2. B.
      saving electricity for local businesses
    3. C.
producing green electricity to power their phones
    4. D.

    1. A.
      they are easier to ride
    2. B.
      they are more expensive
    3. C.
      they don't have wires connected
    4. D.
they can not store extra electricity
  3. 3.

What might prevent the green exercise equipment from getting more popular?

    1. A.
      People's unwillingness to go green.
    2. B.
The high cost of making it
    3. C.
      Safety problems concerning electricity
    4. D.

It has taken 90 years since she was born in a poor house in County Limerick for a woman considered America’s oldest illegal immigrant to get her Irish passport. It will be a few more months before Josephine Stout will finally be declared a US citizen, entitling(賦于…權(quán)力) her to a pension and other benefits.
Despite having lived in America for most of her life since she arrived in 1923, the great-grandmother was declared an undocumented alien(華僑)in 1999, when she tried to claim state aid to help raise her seven grandchildren, who were left orphaned when her daughter was killed by a robber over$20.
Even though she has never considered herself Irish, noting “I don’t even have an accent,” she didn’t officially exist as an American when officials in Chicago insisted that she prove her citizenship in order to qualify for benefits. But she had no birth certificate or passport when she arrived on an immigrant ship from Ireland from Ireland with her parents, who had 12 other children.
She never gave the matter much thought until 1999, when she was in her late 70s and needed assistance to raise her grandchildren. For 12 years, Mrs. Stout managed to support the family by doing various jobs. But her life was hard and marked by tragedy. Her husband died in 1996, and her son Thomas died in a car accident with his girlfriend in 1985. Her only surviving child, Rosemary, died of cancer in 2009.
A Catholic charity referred her case to Chicago Irish Immigrant Support(CIIS), which alerted the Irish Consulate(領(lǐng)事館). 科目:高中英語 來源: 題型:閱讀理解

Roger Alvarez, 22, was one of the 52 percent of students who didn’t make it through his senior year at Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles.
He dropped out several years ago, but by the time he was in ninth grade, Alvarez says he already knew he wasn’t going to graduate.
“There’s a certain amount of knowledge you have to have when you enter in a specific grade, and I didn’t have it.” Alvarez says,“Every class I used to go in, I was like, ‘Do I know this? I don’t know this.’”
It was a shameful attitude, he tells his former English teacher, Antero Garcia, 29.
“You were determined to help me, but what was I willing to give? I could have actually tried.”
For his part, Garcia wants to know how he could have reached out to Alvarez better, but Alvarez says Garcia had always been helpful.
“I mean, you could cheer me up, and then I see other students doing way better,” Alvarez says,“So then, I get nervous. I get stuck, and then my motivation goes to the floor.” He felt the situation was hopeless.
“You talked to me like if I could do it, but inside me, I knew I couldn’t.” he tells Garcia,“I just didn’t want you to think that I’m…stupid.”
Now, school is a life tool that Alvarez says he’s missing—but his teacher isn’t to blame.
“Always, I just wanted you to know…you were a good teacher, and I always respected you.” he tells Garcia,“Some teachers, I felt like they only wanted to teach a certain group of people. But you looked at me and you paid attention.”
“Maybe it didn’t get me to graduate, but there’re a lot of teachers, they don’t take the time to take a look. And it was never your fault.”
Alvarez now works the night shift at a loading dock(碼頭). He still hopes to get his degree one day
