Money matters, no matter who or where you are. So when China’s currency the yuan was devalued (貶值) against the US dollar for three straight days in mid-August, the world felt the effects. As CNN put it: “If China sneezes, the world catches a cold.”

Why does it matter so much?

The exchange rate is the term for the comparison of two currencies. It says how much one currency is worth in terms of (換算) the other.

“Exchange rates play an important role in a country’s level of trade. It is one of the most important determinants (決定因素) of a country’s relative level of economic health,” wrote Jason Van Bergen of Forbes.com. A higher currency makes a country’s exports more expensive and imports cheaper, and vice versa (反之亦然).

Devaluation means the same amount of RMB can be exchanged for fewer USD. For example, on Aug 11, the exchange rate of RMB to USD was 6.23, which meant $1 was worth the same as 6.23 yuan. Two days later, the rate changed to 6.4, meaning the value of RMB had dropped by 2.7 percent.

So what does a weaker currency mean for our lives?

It first affects those who want to travel to, or study in, the US. If your former classmate is leaving for a preparatory (預(yù)科) school in the US at the end of August, it now costs about 1,800 yuan more to exchange currency for 10,000 US dollars than it did earlier this month. However, since many currencies have decreased in value, the value of yuan is still relatively high despite the recent devaluation. This means it costs 1,200 yuan less to get 10,000 Canadian dollars now than it did in March.

Even if we don’t have plans to travel abroad, though, we could still be affected. For example, your mother will have to pay more if she buys directly from overseas websites with US dollars. And chances are that imported chocolate and potato chips will soon be a bit more expensive in your local supermarket.

However, the weaker yuan is good news for Chinese exporters. It makes Chinese exports less expensive and it could boost the overseas sales that have been among the main reasons for China’s economic growth during its rise over the past 30 years.

Just as Erik Britton of Fathom, a London-based economic consulting firm, told The Guardian: “We’re all going to feel it: we’ll feel it through commodities (商品), not just from China but from everywhere that has to compete with it; and we’ll feel it through wages.”

“The devalued yuan will force China’s Asian rivals (競爭對手), such as Indonesia and South Korea, to compete even harder,” wrote Heather Stewart, economics editor of The Guardian. “The result may be cheaper Christmas presents.”

1.According to the passage, it can be learned from the passage EXCEPT___________

A. The higher China’s currency is , the less expensive potato chips from America become.

B. In March people spent 1,200 yuan more to get 10,000 Canadian dollars than they do today because Canadian dollars increased in value.

C. China’s currency’s devaluation against the US dollar in mid-August makes students studying in America pay more school fees.

D. People who work in Fathom will be greatly affected on account of the weaker yuan.

2.The passage implies that ___________.

A. The yuan’s devaluation contributes a lot to China’s economic growth .

B.Exchange rates are the most important factor determining a country’s relative level of economic health

C. The yuan’s devaluation has a great impact on all the countries in the world.

D.Chinese exports sell well overseas because of their high quality

3.If the exchange rate of RMB to USD increased from 6.5 to 6.7, how much more percent would you pay when you bought a bag worth $100?

A. 2.7 B. 5.4 C.20.0 D. 3.1

Last week we held a heating discussion on which we should do for our school before we graduate. The students in our class have different suggestion. Some students thought that we can collect money to buy some books for the school library or everything else for the schoo1. Others students think that it’s not necessary to spend money. We can study hard and make our school satisfied with us.

In my opinion, we don’t have to spend money. We can do something meaningfully without money. For an example, we can do some voluntary work to beautify the school and try to get better results in the coming exams so that our school will proud of us.

parents usually go to malls to find new school supplies for their children. One of the most important things to get during this time is the backpack. Most students choose to bring a backpack because it allows them to have both hands free. This makes the bag less likely to hinder (妨礙)other activities that the person carrying it may be doing at the same time. Here are the ways parents can choose the perfect backpack for school.

How many books will children be carrying to school? How many notebooks should be inside the bag? Parents should know these details before buying a bag for their children. Each situation requires a different bag so it pays to ask children about the expected load.

Do children need special storage for the bag? If they will be carrying a laptop computer inside the new backpack, make sure that parents get a model that’s designed specifically for laptop use. This will protect the computer from bumps and falls that might damage the device if it had less protection.

Are children going to use the bag for a long time? If they want to use a bag for a long time, parents will be better off investing in a good brand that is known for quality. Parents may have to pay extra cash to get the top of the line and the best backpack in the market.

1.Why do most students like bringing a backpack?

A. Because it looks beautiful.

B. Because it’s a duty for them to bring it.

C. Because they can put all the books into it.

D. Because it helps them do other activities freely.

2.What does the second paragraph mainly talk about?

A. Parents should find out how many books their children have.

B. Parents must ask teachers for help before buying a backpack.

C. Parents should know the weight of things that will go inside the backpack.

D. Parents must ask their children’s requirements when buying a backpack.

3.The underlined word “bumps” in the third paragraph is closest in meaning to“ ”.

A.knocks B. jumps C. stands D. beats

4.Which of the following can we know from the text?

Gift Giving

I'm going to China and everyone in my class is asking me to buy them something. What should I do?

Reply from the Highlights Editor:

Your classmates are probably just excited about your trip. Most likely they don't expect you to buy gifts for everyone. Sending a few postcards to the entire class during your trip would be a wonderful way to share your experiences. The pictures on the cards and your words of description will be the best gift of all.

Dog Begging

My dog always begs for food at the dinner table. I really want to feed him, but my mom says I can't. I'm afraid he won't like me anymore. What should I do?

Reply from the Highlights Editor:

Your dog loves you for many more reasons than just for what you feed him. You can show him that you care about him by playing with him, by petting him and speaking kindly to him and by making sure he has fresh water. It might be best if your dog is not near the dinner table while you are eating. You could teach him to stay in another room.

Being Bilingual(會說雙語的)

My aunt insists that we speak our language(Tagalog) at home and English outside the house. Do you think she is right?

Reply from the Highlights Editor:

It is a great gift to have someone in your family who is willing to take the time to teach you another language. It's a good way to keep family traditions alive, and it helps develop your language skills. Your ability to use both English and Tagalog will help you learn a third and fourth language later in life. So it sounds like a great idea!

Modern festival-goers who worry about ending up with a dead mobile phone battery(電池) after days stuck in a muddy field with no electric plug power points may now have a solution——power boots(靴子).

Mobile phone company European Telco Orange has introduced a phone charging(充電) prototype—— a set of thermoelectric gumboots or Wellington boots with a “power generation sole” that changes heat from the wearer’s feet into electrical power to charge battery-powered hand-helds.

The boot was designed by Dave Pain, managing director at GotWind, a renewable energy company. Pain said the boot uses the Seebeck effect, in which a circuit made of two dissimilar metals conducts electricity if the two places where they connect are held at different temperatures. “In the sole of the Wellington boot there’s a thermocouple and if you apply heat to one side of the thermocouple and cold to the other side it produces an electrical charge,” Pain said. “That electrical charge we then pass through to a battery which you’ll find in the heel of the boot for storage of the electrical power for later use to charge your mobile phone.” These thermocouples are connected electrically, forming an array of multiple thermocouples (thermopile). They are then sandwiched between two thin ceramic wafers. When the heat from the foot is applied on the top side of the ceramic wafer and cold is applied on the opposite side, from the cold of the ground, electricity is made.

But the prototype boot does have one drawback. You have to walk for 12 hours in the boots to make one hour’s worth of charge.

1.The passage is probably taken from _____________ of a website.

A. the business book B. the sports book

C. the science book D. the health book

2.What’s the main idea of the third paragraph?

A. How the boot works to make electricity.

B. How long the boot can be used.

C. Who invented the power boot.

D. The weakness of the boot.

3.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “drawback” in the last paragraph?

A. Benefit. B. Disadvantage.

C. Patience. D. Function.

4.The invention seems to be good news to those___________.

A. who like traveling in the wild

B. who work at home

C. who study at school

D. who work at an office
