Do you remember the night when you took advantage of my 17-year-old neighbor who had to drive to pick up his sister from her dance lessons? Do you know how we all felt when he hit another car and killed the two people in the other car? He died the next morning too.His sister walked home from her dance lesson, and passed police cars and a crowd of people gathering on the sidewalk just two blocks away from the dance studio. She didn’t realize her brother was in the midst of it all.She never saw him again. And it’s all your fault.
I wish you’d walk out of my life forever.I don’t want anything to do with you.Look at all the pain you’ve caused.Sure, you’ve made people happy too from time to time. But the damage you’ve caused in the lives of millions is inexcusable.Stop luring (引誘) in the people I love.Stop hurting me, please.
Sincerely,

The Importance of Positive Attitude
A positive attitude is very important as it will make our life easier. 1. . There will be times when we will face problems and obstacles. The most challenging part is not when our life goes smoothly but how we react when we experience problems and difficulties.

Lights Out at Bedtime
There are plenty of good reasons to power up a personal desktop or laptop computer in the evening — writing e-mails,chatting on social networks or making purchases over the Internet, for instance. But various studies indicate that people who stare at a PC’s bright monitor shortly before going to bed probably sleep less soundly than they would otherwise because the light seriously affects their natural wake-sleep cycle."They haven't proved it though," says Dieter Kunz, the team's director at Charite's Psychiatric Clinic in St.Hedwig's Hospital in Berlin.
Similarly, exposure to just 10 minutes of normal bathroom lighting is enough to free the sleep hormone melatonin, which regulates people's natural wake-sleep cycle and makes them sleepy at nightfall.
Ten years ago,a team of British and American researchers detected a photo-pigment(光敏色素) in the human eye that signals to the body whether it is day or night, summer or winter. The photo-pigment is especially sensitive to blue light.
"The blue light more or less tells the body,'It's daytime,be awake,'" Kunz says.Monitors have a mostly cold white light content and scientists suspect the photo-pigment may react similarly to it.So the longer people look into the bright light, the more awake they become - and then sleep poorly.
A lot of people have difficulty "switching off" in the evening.About half of the women in Germany and a quarter of the men sleep poorly.
Environmental factors are only one of the possible causes.Job stress as well as personal and health concerns are also the main reasons for their sleep problems.
In addition, electronic objects' standby lights and indicator lamps can be annoying in the dark and affect sleep."Sound scientific evidence is still lacking on this matter," Kunz notes.
According to Kunz, those who cannot go without their computer in the evening should turn down the blue content if possible and lower the brightness somewhat."But nobody does that because, after all,you want to concentrate while working at the computer and the light helps the brain."
1.The passage is mainly about ____________.
A.natural wake-up cycles
B.the effect of light on sleep
C.personal and health concerns
D.functions of computer monitors
2.The underlined word “which” in Paragraph 2 refers to_____.
A.normal bathroom lighting
B.10-minute exposure to lighting
C.the release process of a chemical
D.a(chǎn) chemical affecting one’s sleep cycle
3.We can learn from the passage that ______.
A.the blue light has a calming effect.
B.the photo-pigment tells people day or night
C.women in Germany use computers more often than men
D.it has been proved that standby lights affect people’s sleep

What benefits can you have from a film? A well-made film offers a whole world of things to watch. First there are the story aspects — the plot, characters, dialogue and themes. Then there are the technical aspects — the camera work, cuttings and special effects. And there are many other things, like the credits, musical score and the acting. A well-made film offers much more than you see in one viewing (觀看).
Films are a means of communication. They can tell you things, just as newspapers do, or television, or any other means of communication. Sometimes they communicate important things to you, like ideas or lifestyles or ways of looking at the world. Sometimes people are aware of this, and sometimes not. The more you are aware of this, the better you are.
Notice, for example, the way films sometimes affect fashion. A star dresses or wears her hair in a certain way, and suddenly everyone is imitating (模仿) her. Boys in the 1950s could sometimes be seen wearing black leather jackets, idling (閑逛) on street corners and smoking cigarettes. They were imitating Marion Brando. His films taught them a certain way to behave.
Films can also teach politics. In Star Wars, the heroes were a bunch of lovable incompetents (無能者) fighting with guts (膽量) and not much else. They were, in fact, rather like the British in the early days of WW II. Their enemies, like the Nazis, had a big advantage in equipment and numbers of troops, and they were like the Nazis in discipline and heartlessness too. The whole film, in fact, was a re-run (重演) of WW II, and taught values like faith and love of liberty. This is all to the good, but the point is, did you notice it?
1.All of the following are mentioned as noticeable aspects of a film EXCEPT________.
A. the list of names of actors and directors, etc.
B. the cost of a film
C. the music for a film
D. the language used in a film
2.The last sentence in Paragraph 1 probably means ________.
A. a high quality film can be appreciated repeatedly from different angles
B. a good film always attracts a lot of viewers
C. a well made film usually has more than one theme
D. one can never find out how many characters there are in a good film
3.It can be inferred from the passage that in his film,Marion Brando was ________.
A. a motorist who always wore a black leather jacket
B. a homeless man who died of excessive smoking
C. a rebellious man during WWⅡ
D. an idler who didn't have any serious things to do
4.Star Wars is a film________.
A. about WWⅡ B. for politics
C. reflecting WWⅡ D. for peace lovers

Our house was directly across the street from the clinic entrance of John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. We lived downstairs and rented the upstairs rooms to the patients at the clinic.
One evening as I was fixing supper, there was a knock at the door. I opened it to see a truly awful-looking man. He’s hardly taller than my eight-year-old son. “Good evening. I’ve come to see if you’ve a room. I came for a treatment this morning from the eastern shore, and there’s no bus till morning.” He told me he’d been hunting for a room since noon but with no success. “I guess it’s my face…I know it looks terrible, but my doctor says with a few more treatments…” For a moment I hesitated, but his next words convinced me: “I could sleep in this chair on the porch. My bus leaves early in the morning.”
I told him we would find him a bed. When I had finished the dishes, I talked with him. He told me he fished for a living to support his five children, and his wife, who was hopelessly crippled (殘疾的) from a back injury. He didn’t tell it by way of complaint. Next morning, just before he left, as if asking a great favor, he said, “Could I come back and stay the next time?” He added, “Your children made me feel at home.”
On his next trip he arrived a little after seven in the morning. As a gift, he brought a big fish and the largest oysters (牡蠣) I had ever seen. I knew his bus left at 4:00 a.m. and I wondered what time he had to get up in order to do this for us.
In the years he came to stay overnight with us and there was never a time that he did not bring us vegetables from his garden. I know our family always will be grateful to have known him; from him we learned how to accept the bad without complaint when facing the misfortune.
1.Why did the author agree to let the man spend the night in his house at last?
A. Because the man said others refused to accommodate him.
B. Because the man said he would not cause much inconvenience.
C. Because the man said he had come from the eastern shore.
D. Because the man said he had been hunting for a room since noon.
2. How long would it take the man to travel from his home to Baltimore by bus?
A. About 1 hour. B. About 2 hours.
C. About 3 hours. D. About 4 hours.
3.From the text we can know that __________.
A. the author’s children were kind and friendly to the man
B. the man was fed up with his hard-work and his family
C. John Hopkins Hospital provided rooms for the patients to live in
D. the author and his family were thought highly of by his neighbors
4.The author’s family were grateful to know the man because __________.
A. he often brought them fish and vegetables from his garden
B. he paid them money for his staying
C. he taught them how to accept the bad without complaint
D. he stayed only overnight with the writer’s family

It was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas 2005. While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike gone.
The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries(食品雜貨),saving us from having to walk long distances from where we live.
I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a plete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before.
People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity(人性)as a whole. And it has influenced us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with others. No matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting.
1.Why was the bike so important to the couple?
A. The man’s job was bike racing.
B. It was their only possession.
C. It was a nice Kona 18 speed.
D. They used it for work and daily life.
2.We can infer from the text that ____________.
A. the couple worked 60 hours a week.
B. people were busy before Christmas
C. the stranger brought over the bike
D. life was hard for the young family.
3.How did people get to know the couple’s problem?
A. From radio broadcasts.
B. From a newspaper.
C. From TV news.
D. From a stranger.
4.What do the couple learn from their experience?
A. Strangers are usually of little help.
B. One should take care of their bike.
C. News reports make people famous.
D. An act of kindness can mean a lot.
