The mystery of why humans are the only animals to have chins (下巴) may have been solved by scientists who suggest that it is connected to the invention of cooking.

A paper from the University of Florida tries to explain exactly why humans 一 unlike all other primates (靈長(zhǎng)目動(dòng)物) 一have chins.

A team led by Dr James Pampush collected information from more than 100 kinds of primate and compared it with historical information. Computer modelling found how the chin developed.

Random genetic change(隨機(jī)的基因變化)was ruled out because the chin developed 77 times faster than the average genetic change. And the study finds no evidence that it -served a useful purpose. The research, published in the Journal of Human Evolution, suggests the chin is a by-product of another event. In this case, the event could well be the invention of cooking.

“The chin began to appear as a result of major changes six million years earlier. The arrival of cooking and softer food meant humans no longer needed big teeth and powerful jaws .and over the next two million years to 200,000 years both got smaller and the chin was bora ,” said Dr Pampush. “My guess is that it most likely happened around two million years ago when there was a jump in brain size. The changes which finally lead to the chin are directly related to cooking, and indirectly related to larger brains and bodies."

Dr Pampush's new theory goes against previous suggestions that the chin was an example of sexual selection, with attractive chins marking out men who are likely to make good mates(配偶) . The fact that both men and women have chins means the theory is unlikely.

Another theory put forward in the past said that the chin was a way to balance out the stress of chewing, but Dr Pampush also threw doubt on that idea.

1. The reason why we have chins .

   A. is connected to humans’ action of chewing

   B. has something to do with cooking

   C. is random genetic change

   D. is related to eating time

2. How did the researchers get their result?

   A. By carrying out experiments. .

   B. By studying scientific theories.

   C. By examining the human brain.

   D. By comparing recorded information.

3. Before developing chins,humans .

   A. had bigger teeth

   B. cooked softer food

   C. had smaller jaws

   D. had larger bodies

4. According to Dr Pampush, the chin most

probably appeared around .

   A. 6 million years ago

   B. 4  million years ago

   C. 2  million years ago

   D. 0.2 million years ago

5. What does the underlined part “the theory” refer to?

   A. Men are likely to have more attractive chins.

   B. The chin helps humans attract a mate.

   C. Both men and women have chins.

   D. Dr Pampush's theory.

根據(jù)第一段中的it is connected to the invention of cooking 可知,人類有下巴與烹飪的發(fā)明有關(guān)。

A team led by Dr James Pampush collected information from more than 100 kinds of primate and compared it  with historical information

100 kinds of pnmate and compared it with historical information

The arrival of cooking and softer food meant humans no longer needed big teeth可以推斷,在下巴出現(xiàn)之前, 人類的牙齒較大。

My guess is that it most likely happened around two million years ago

劃線部分指代前一 句中的 the chin was an example of sexual selection, with attractive chins marking out men who are likely to make good mates ,由此可知〜the theory 指代“下巴幫助男性找到好配偶”這一 說法。

Hello,Earth! Can you hear me?” That's the voice more than 400,000 people received recently. It was from Philae,a space vehicle that landed on a comet in 2014. However its transmissions(傳送信號(hào)) back home went silent since then.

It took a long time for Philae to make its way across the solar system and reach comet 67P/C-G. The space vehicle got there aboard the Rosetra probe(探測(cè)器),which has been circling around the comet since Philae separated from it in November,2014.

Philae' s job was to collect materials to. study the comet's composition. And for about two and a half days after landing,it did just that, sending the information back to scientists on Earth. But Philae s landing on the comet's icy surface had not been smooth. While touching down,it jumped up and ended up in the shadow of something like a huge rock. Philae runs on solar power, but there was no light in the place where it landed. In the end,it failed to work.

However,as comet 67P/C-G moved closer to the sun, more sunlight reached the space vehicle, allowing it to power up and come back online. Philae then sent something to Rosetta, which passed on the information back to Earth.

“We only received the information for about 85 seconds, but that’s enough to let us know it is alive and well,” says Stephan Ulamec, who works for the European Space Agency. “We hope to work out where it landed exactly on the 4-kilometer-wide comet. Now we plan to change how Rosetta moves so that Philae can keep on communicating and receiving instructions."

25. Hearing Philae’ s voice,those people must

have felt .

   A. afraid   B. calm

   C. excited   D. worried

26. According to the text,Philae .

   A. was damaged when it landed

   B. moved around comet 67P/C-G

   C. needs light and gas to keep working

   D. helps scientists learn about a comet

27. What Stephan says in the text suggests that

   A. Rosetta will move around another comet

   B. Philae will continue to work for scientists

   C. most comets are as wide as.four kilometers

   D. he wonders whether Philae is still alive

28. What does the author mainly talk about in the text?

   A. A sleeping space vehicle wakes up.

   B. It is very dangerous to travel in space.

   C. A new comet was discovered recently.

   D. Philae was sent into space snrnpcsfiillv
